CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gekko (Michael Douglas) lays out his creed of business ethics and how to get ahead in business to Bud (Charlie Sheen).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"Greed is Good." This is the credo of the aptly named Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), the antihero of Oliver Stone's Wall Street. Gekko, a high-rolling corporate raider, is idolized by young-and-hungry broker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen). Inveigling himself into Gekko's inner circle, Fox quickly learns to rape, murder and bury his sense of ethics. Only when Gekko's wheeling and dealing causes a near-tragedy on a personal level does Fox "reform"-though his means of destroying Gekko are every bit as underhanded as his previous activities on the trading floor. Director Stone, who cowrote Wall Street with Stanley Weiser, has claimed that the film was prompted by the callous treatment afforded his stockbroker father after 50 years in the business; this may be why the film's most compelling scenes are those between Bud Fox and his airline mechanic father (played by Charlie Sheen's real-life dad Martin). Ironically, Wall Street was released just before the October, 1987 stock market crash.

Michael Douglas is one of the greatest leading men ever, in the 80s and 90s he gave one brilliant performance after another.
Falling Down was 90s Joker for the everyday man, another great movie starring him.
Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct to name JUST a couple
Isn't it mostly just being good looking?
Truth Indeed
@@magx01 sure, he's good looking (depending on who you ask) but he's actually a really good actor.
He's very natural and just becomes the character that he's portraying.
Also, more movies from back then had more substance than today's movies. So he was lucky enough to have gotten good role after good role.
“And if you need a friend, get a dog”. Best and most truthful line.
Actually its a quote from President Truman about having friends in Washington D.C.
@@yao052 You are right "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." Reagan had a good joke as well - When he met his new Chief of Staff, he said "Mr. President, I'll be with you through Thick." And Reagan asked "What about thin?" The guy answered "Welcome to Washington."
There is no record of Gordon ever having a dog So, Gordon had no friends.
It's not 'truthful', it's highlighting his very empty life.
@@keithwellerlounge74 Thank you. Only an asshat would think that's the "best and most truthful" line. smh
"It's all about the bucks, kid. The rest is conversation."- G Gekko.
The lighting transition at 1:33 is pure stage/cinema craft. Oliver Stone is stepping on your throat at this point. You will feel the power of Gekko in the tips of your toes and fingers when that light drops. "You stop sending me information and start getting me some". Truly a turning point in our tragedy story that is the brilliant Wall Street. Michael Douglas was born for this role.
That was just how corny the 80s was.
wow, you have a talent for writting sir
Love the theatricality of it. Stone also does it in JFK. Both shot by the masterful Robert Richardson.
@@nocturnalrecluse1216 how is that corny?
@@BusinessOfFear Because the 80s was all about greasy hair and montages.
The older I become, the more I admire and more am I fascinated about this movie. In fact, it's unbelievably authentic. I've been on side of Bud, a wanna-be crazy young guy, who just wants in, and I've been on the side of a guy, he is already inside for a long time and started to manipulate younger guys myself...It is so accurate in all of the dialogues, emotions, and plays. Pure magic.
I cant say too much but I started out as a newbie and ran my own team in a *cough cough - investment house. We went from one dingy small office with 3 people to taking up 5 levels of a substantial office building in the middle of town and I was responsible for a great part of that as I was there from the start. They got raided by 20+ Federal Police and Securities agents. I had left about 2 months prior to the raid. Everything in this movie is accurate. Only thing is it is a whole lot worse now. The best advice I can give to any suckers/prospects/investors is .... look after your own money, do NOT give it to any of the big guys to invest, you can do better yourself if you do a little research and anyway, be responsible for for your own decisions instead of gifting some ahole your hard earnt money.

@@kenjohn12 Gordon G is insanely fun!
This movie is a classic. It never gets old.
This was the greatest performance Of Michael Douglas in my opinion.
I Loved him Fatal Attraction as well.
Douglas was just so great in this. He based his whole look on then lakers coach pat riley as douglas was a huge lakers fan.
Pat Riley was the best dressed coach in the NBA during those years.
Mr power pleat pants lol
Douglas’ performance of Gordon G gets better with age. At the time he seemed like a cut-throat bad guy. Now there is something likeable about him. More complex character then initially perceived. Whether you liked GG or not, he was a blast of character. Also had tons of great quotes! MD seemed to be having fun playing him.

Background gets dark at 1:34, followed by thunder. The subtlety of movie making.
Bud agreed to walk with Gekko down that "dark tunnel" so to speak
Good catch!!!
Yeah that light shift is amazing. It's what I first noticed.
Similar to when Fox is kicked out of limo and then changes his mind. Gekko big smile
Bud just went to the dark side.
"now get dressed,, ill show you MY charts""..classic
He should have also won the Oscar for Falling Down....
Great actor Douglas is.
Every time I see a clip of Wall Street I have to stop and watch it. One of my favorite all-time movies. Michael Douglas is fantastic as GG!
That fucking hair is awesome SLICK

@@yosevoaken6957 so you'd rock a mullet?
This was a really good movie, Michael did some wonderful acting in this.
This film was supposed to be an artistic warning. Now it's treated as a how to guide. Dangerous times.
Think Wolf of Wall Street.
Look at Atlas Shrugged
People only seeing the massive amounts of money being made by Gekko and Bud Fox. What people have overlooked is the fact that Bud Fox was jailed for Insider Trading and, according to the sequel (Wall Street: Money never sleeps), so was Gordon Gekko and Bluestar was saved from being split up. At the end of the film it was quite clear no-one was the winner - even Bud Fox's father had a massive heart attack. I think that was the message Oliver Stone was trying to convey. The old adage 'The love of money is the root of all evil' was certainly true.
Did you hear the thunder and see the darkening of the shot at the end? Basicly made a pact with the evil one. Dark time indeed. By the grace of God this movie shows us both paths and a way out. God bless everyone.
@@JP1234815 yeah, but all it really showed people was that in order to make money in life, you have to be a dirty scumbag 😂😂😂

Actually Stone wanted James Woods to play Gekko.

Never realized this before but here we have two actors who both started out acting as overshadowed by their fathers. And this is the movie that sets them free.
Michael Douglas is way better than Kirk has ever been, way, way better actor! Martin Sheen on the other hand is really good and has always been.
This wasnt mike's " first hit ", come on by that time he had made a name for himself and people forgot who kirk was.
Mourchid Youssef Douglas had a career before this but it was mostly hokey comedies or playing a pretty boy. This is the first he was praised for real acting.
Lars Nilsson Michael Douglas was better then his Dad. Martin Sheen was better then Charlie, though Charlie had potential before his life derailed.
Michael Geister Absolutely, I think that the stark difference to what he’d done before really rammed that home for critics and audiences too.
One of the greatest films of all time!
Well deserved oscar by Michael Douglas. But Charlie and Martin Sheen are phenomenal too
Martin was great. I found Charlie to be EXTREMELY annoying lol.
@@Lightner445555555555 Same here. His acting seems particularly bad in this movie. But I’ve never been able to figure out if it’s truly bad acting or if the character is just supposed to be so utterly douchey that it’s next to intolerable to watch and Sheen nailed it. It seems like bad acting but the character sucks so...🤷♀️
Poor, smart and hungry, with no feelings
brilliant movie, probably the greatest financials and market themed movie ever made -- i cannot think of a better one. I recommend watching it with subtitles to catch all the details and lingo of the dialogue.
Oliver Stone had a lot of incredible films early in his career. Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the 4th of July, JFK...
Charlie Sheen was great in this movie. It's really sad how he allowed his addictions to destroy what could have been a great film career.

I love how the exposure changes when it gets into close up at the end
This is powerful. I’m no fan of Hollywood or movies but there’s many lessons and quotes in films like these which should make a person think.
First time in the zillions ones I saw this movie that I realized that when Gordon says " Get dress I show you my charts" the illumination went darker.... that was literal for young padawan Buddy....
calito44 з
Went dark and clap of thunder. Signifies Bud making deal with the devil.
“ if you need a friend , get a dog”
Great line.
Hehehe I just noticed that at the very beginning of the clip sheen's hair is all combed back and tidy, but later it's messy. Magic
Different angle... The other side seemed combed
Notice how when Michael Douglas says I’ll show my charts the lights fade dramatically & a rumble of thunder. It’s as if the devil is opening up.
Douglas goes from Jim Halpert to Gordon Gekko in 12 swipes of a brush.
Great scene. Of course I got no idea what he's talking about, but great scene.
Dogs are great friends.
Sadly, they only live 10-12 years or so.
He's basically saying the only way to truly get ahead in the stock market is to inside trade (i.e "get information"). You have to know things before other people in order to truly make huge sums of short term money; you won't get it studying information that anybody out there can study as well.
***** Perhaps. In short, you have to know something others don't, that's a fact. Otherwise, you can't ever get a jump on the price if other people know it's going to skyrocket too.
Whether that comes from insider trading (which is Gekko's preferred method) or your own instincts/research. What Gekko is saying is that the first option has a FAR higher success rate than the second one. Nobody can dispute that.

Michael Douglas did an Excellent Job Performing Gordon in Wall Street and Won an Academy Award for Best Actor of this Year.
This is one of my top 5's! Always have to have a copy and it NEVER gets old! Great everytime I watch it! 'Money Never Sleeps', of course, wasn't as good..but, it answered alot of questions about this one. You really have to have both. Thanks for the upload! Made a special playlist for this one, along with the numerous other clips I found on the movie,(s). Love all the 'Stone' movies!
hi , what's your other top 4?
This movie is so raw and real. No bullshit.
I saw this movie when I was 17. It inspired and motivated me to do great things in my life, be tenacious and pursue the things I love.
And now I see the same thing in the kid who owns the weed dispensary I work at.
Lol
Sheep get slaughtered! And that's exactly what's happening now, what a classic!!! Almost everything that comes out of Gordon's mouth is gold, if you understand what he is talking about, for example:1) If you are not inside, you are outside!2) The most valuable commodity I know of is information3) Every battle is won, before its ever fought!4) Its a zero sum game, pal! somebody wins, somebody loses.
do you throw darts? or do you bet on sure things
working in investment, i sure hell agree with Gordon's words end of the day all LP's care about is how much money you made, legal or illegal doesn't matter just don't get caught, and then people get surprised why Wall Street is so corrupted!
Agulani what toxic assets are u bundeling now? First it was housing and now? What derivative is hot? Education loans?
I'm not engaged in any kind of CDO's or CMO's , your comment sounded like accusations to me! I'm actually fully supportive of SRI(Socially Responsible Investment) however the Wall Street and Main Street totally dictate CASH IS KING! they don't care about either planet or human beings, regarding whats hot now anything that you can sell to any "client" is hot it includes toxic options, non performing loans which have been resold and overcollateralized by different non performing loans in short anything they can sell to you they WILL!
It is actually coming out of Oliver Stone's mouth since he wrote the script!
“Most of these Harvard MBA types, they don’t add up to dog sh*t.” I’m a believer because I put up with them my whole life and did better 👍🏼.

Jim Lahey hunger is the “it” factor. It’s why a 6th man in the NBA can dominate while that same man once he’s a starter, is just going through the motions. Be the 6th man in life and win at all costs!
For lack of a better expression
yeah, but the key is he still wanted smart guys. the guys who go to harvard typically come from well off backgrounds, they don't have the hunger. I think too many hear his quote and assume he's talking about "street smarts" - he isn't.
2003: AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes & Villains: Gordon Gekko - #24 Villain
I particularly love the end of this scene. When Gekko stops and turns to face bud and the lighting drops, so you can only see his face, and says "get dressed, I'll show you my charts".
Introducing him to the dirty tricks of Wall Street
I agree
I always thought of it as bud was going into the darkness. Like he was making a deal with the devil.
The shift in tone in that scene is chilling
You know Michael Douglas is a good actor if he can go from a likable character in the American president to someone like this.
“Public’s out there throwing darts at a board sport. I don’t throw darts at a board. I bet on sure things.” Best investment advice ever!!
Problem is there is no sure thing in investment or trading unless you have insider information which is illegal to use when trading.

1:30 lighting combined with "Get dressed, I'll show you my charts." line 👍
Phenomenal performance on a classic film!
Because of this scene I switched from day trading to swing trading.
A lot in this scene is missed by the casual observer. The towels nonchalantly thrown on top of the lockers shows how the members of the club just take for granted that some peasant is going to come along and square the away. Also, the way the light completely falls away when Gekko tells Bud to stop sending him information and start getting him some. The dark side. It’s Darth Vader in a suit. Very cool.
Its trench warfare out there
Oliver Stone originally wanted to cast Warren Beatty and Tom Cruise in this film in the Douglas and Sheen roles. Tom Cruise would have knocked it out of the park, shame it never got cast that way in the end. He was apparently filming Rain Man at the time
Ooh, that's interesting! Would have been such a different film. Although I think Douglas knocked it out of the park.

Its the lighting of the atmosphere around them that is a part of the story, too.
