- It's Cookie's Cacti's first interview video! The CACSS got me in touch with the Desert Botanical Garden to allow us an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the DBG nursery in preparation for the upcoming DBG Spring Plant Sale. This nursery is not open to the public as of now so this is extra special! We spend a gorgeous afternoon with Kenny Zelov, the plant sale director, visiting the plants, talking about how the nursery came to be, and much, much more. Now the plants that we see at these garden sales take on a whole new meaning.
Being my first interview video, there are many beginner mistakes, including microphone troubles and dialogue timing and audio levels, but that's what we're here for, right? To learn! Those of you who have been on this TH-cam journey with me for a while know very well that this entire TH-cam channel has been one giant learning experience. I went into the interview with no plan, no questions prepared, having no idea what to expect. And this was my first time meeting Kenny. This video was just a fun and educational conversation between us and Kenny. Big props to Kenny - he's a great speaker! I'm so lucky that my first interview was with him.

I'm so glad you liked this video! I like to frequent the big box stores often near my home. And sometimes I'll do an entire tour of all the big boxes within a 10 mile radius 😂. It's so much fun treasure hunting for cool plants since all the stores tend to have slighty different inventory. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this 😁
That Tephrocactus looked like a potato 🥔! The blue aloe always get to me. That’s so cool you get exclusive tours. I have the baby aloe he’s growing at the end. As an adult, it pups a lot.

It's too bad that I've been traumatized by the horrendous Aloe losses the past two summers. Otherwise one of those little blue ones would definitely come home with me...

Cookie is hanging in there and keeping us on our toes. The dream of a second remission is slowly fading, but as long as we can manage it such that Cookie knows no different, then I'll take that. Thank you so much for asking about her, Bill!

No I didn't go. Being 77 years old, I am trying to cut back on buying plants. If I go to this sale, there is no way I will not be buying. That is one reason I really like your video. I get to see it without the temptation.

That Parodia is a monster! I went to the sale yesterday and the discount area was practically cleared out, so hopefully it means all those discount plants found good homes!

Thanks for showing us Jenny! The selection is amazing and reasonable prices for healthy specimens. I myself am currently into Haworthia/Haworthiopsis, could you please show more footage on their Haworthia selection (if you get a chance)? I caught a of glimpses of some H. truncacta. Just wondering if they have any variegated or other variety options of H..

Did you make it to the sale, Kevin? I was there on Saturday and it looked like they had a pretty successful sale this season, lots of empty tables and spaces (which was a great sign!). I tried to capture a little bit of the Haworthia on camera but I think there were only a few pots left by the time I got there. I'll keep this in mind next time I do a shopping video!

14:37 there was a video from a nursery in Tuscan AZ, Plants for the Southwest, where we cuts a couple flats of his astros to develop something unusual and then roots the top half. you can try that

Waooh! Thank you for sharing another cool place and people, i ve got advices to ask you: i want to degraft a gymnocalycium with some pups, do i let the pups on the motherplant, and is this a good time to do it, here in Guadeloupe the dry season is coming soon, thank you very much and see you soon
You know what? I have never degrafted a plant before! Maybe that will be a new adventure sometime in the near future. I wish I could give advice, but I just don't have experience with degrafting. Perhaps Desert Plants of Avalon or Cactus Caffeine would have some information on degrafting.

It's at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. Definitely check out the garden if you love cactus and succulents. The sale takes place March 15-17 for the general public.

I love it when you comment while you're watching the video 😊 Those "ugly" plants are so cool! And to think some of them came from the garden grounds themselves is so cool too. I wonder if they'll all be gone by that time I make it to the sale on the weekend.
I'm glad you like the background music because it's there for a reason, let's just say I had some mic troubles that I didn't know until I sat down to edit.
@@cookiescacti I tried to create some video content with a cheaper version of a GoPro camera that was made by Polaroid and I couldn't get any of my computers to communicate with it so the videos are stuck on a device that I can't share any of the contents on it. I have to keep using my phone for now and that is frustrating to me. I hope that you are doing well. wish that I could make it for the show and sale.
@@HyrimBot oh gosh that's so frustrating! I transfer files between my cameras and my laptop via an SD card. This tech stuff can get super frustrating. I bought some wireless mics after the interview experience in this video. Another tool to learn... Another factor that can go wrong as my setup is becoming more complicated...
