City View Tavern located in the Mt. Adams neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio has origins which date back to when the building was constructed in 1875. In 1891 it was owned by Thomas Spain who opened a grocery on the first of what was originally 3 floors. In 1901 a saloon was added and in 1906 the building and business was sold to Bernard Recklingloh. In 1917 Mr. Recklingloh sold the business to one of his employees, George Lagemann. The business stayed in the Lagemann family until it was sold to the current owner, Deb Henning and is known as the City View Tavern for it's outstanding view of downtown Cincinnati.
The tavern has had many colorful stories over the years and in this video we cover the infamous "Christmas Tree Fire" which resulted in the loss of the upper two floors of the building. We find out why tequila is no longer served at the establishment and its connection to a regular customer by the name of Charlie Manson. Also in the video we discover some of the more famous patrons of City View Tavern including George Clooney and Erich Kunzel.

I lived on Oregon Street near Cityview during the early 70's, in a small enclave of 1 room apts. with cement floors. Those apartments are long gone, their residents dispersed or also gone.
It was a great, close-knit community. Sometimes too close-knit.
Many a resident would stop in and see Ted, his wife and her sister in the morning, after a night of ? for some brisket & coleslaw on a hamburger bun.
In the late '70s I was living in CA, until around 1980, when I was in the process of moving to NYC and stopped in Cincinnati for the evening, to stock up on Graeters and see how the Cityview was doing.
How serendipitous - My friend Charlie, a starter on one of UC's great BB teams, who was living in Cleveland, also happened to be in town that evening, and I ran into him at Cityview.
Charlie is also gone, but fond memories of life on that street remain.
    Long live the Cityview! YCJCYAQFTJB

It was neat to hear the history! That place is absolutely amazing! I’m from Cincinnati and often bring relatives and friends to check it out!
I mustered up the courage to ask out my fellow coworker and took him there for our first date! Eight years and still going strong!🥰

Back in my college days in the early 70s used to land at City View sometimes during the week......a nice little dive with the groceries in the front...had no idea about the richer history that surrounded me.....Charlie Manson and Tequila......that was really rich.........

I lived in Covington in Peaselburg from 1964 to 1985. Moved to Florida and back to Latonia in 2008 until 2021. I now live back in Florida. I know I had heard of Herb and Thelma’s. I think I had been in there but not sure. Was they on the corner of Pike and Western Avenue?

Can’t believe they didn’t mention the incline cable car/train that ran in the early part of the century. Right next to the bar going from base of Mt. Adams to the top. That would take shoppers & workers up and down. You can see the big concrete foundations. Even in this video.

Aiya, that historical photo at the end showing all the development that was replaced with the interstate. Cincinnati needs to reclaim its city from cars.

Allen Schmitz is correct. The Manson story is total BS. I drank plenty of tequila and draft beer there in high school and college. Manson was a young kid when he lived in Cincinnati and spent most of his time in Hamilton, Ohio.

Bogus Manson story charlie lived in Hamilton Ohio and was a car thief and never hung out in Mt. Adams ever and the mid 1980's there was all about yuppie greed like the lady owner.
