The military industrial complex , the insurance companies, politicians, the 1 percent, the healthcare companies are having glass of happiness right now. There completely off the radar on being blamed all over the world it seems like
Blaming tourists is nonsense. Blame the politiicians for allowing so many landlords for renting out their properties for tourism rather than for residents and for not building enough affordable housing.
I don't know what property rights are like in Spain, owners should not be forced to stop using their property however they want. Spain being a welfare state and charging so many taxes, then to keep it that way the state should have houses for the population at low cost.
If you are apartment owner I cant tell you what to do with your own property. And renting apartments for tourists is totally legal, you could move to city less tourism if you can't afford it in a touristic city
Renting to tourists is part of the tourism industry.... nothing against tourists of course but if you stop renting to tourists, the tourism industry suffers as well The creation of Hotels also affects rents and price value of surrounding neighbourhoods ... you cant have your cake and eat.... im not Spanish but here in Portugal we have the exact same problem.... the bottom line is no country on earth that rely on tourism as its major or substantial economic industry, is actually a great place to live in... and what is happening to the south of Europe, is we see tourism rising and economy growths but the standards of living for people who actually live in these countries is dropping, while the cost of living has gone up substantially. To the point where that, genuine stuff and people that the tourists came here to actually experience, is disappearing because the native people are leaving the big cities and urban areas, because it has become too expensive...
Fair enough, but lately, the majority of tourists have been behaving rowdily, and the locals have had it up to here with them. You want a country to welcome you with open arms, right? Then, treat the locals the way you want to be treated.
But all at the same time, and in the same months, causing a housing/hotel bottleneck and a hike in prices for exactly 3 months of the year, which then spews over into renting on AirBnBs (hotels too booked and expensive). The result is a puddle of shit. I live in Spain, know what this looks like. Imagine if your mortgage or rent got 3X more expensive for 3 months of the year.
It is easy to blame tourists, but the problem is that laws allow AirBnB and other corporations to profit without considering locals. Fix those issues, set rent controls and tax corporations. Tourists and locals should be able to coexist and enjoy places together.
As an Italian it is kind of not classy to do this to tourists, it's not their fault they can travel around if they want. They should go for the politician who are in control of people coming into their country.
I'm from Spain and I don't approve this. I'm afraid people now would think that this is how Spaniards think of tourists. From my view, they are generally welcomed.
I cancelled my hotel reservations for Spain (Sept 2024) due to these demonstrations. There are still many countries to visit where tourists are welcome, so be it! Their government is the issue here, not us tourists!
I’m from the US and have spent the last few weeks in Malaysia and Thailand. The Spaniards are living it up in Asia, buying it up and buying out locals, YET they have the nerve to complain?? Hahaha, it’s extremely Western sentiment. Suffer what I do, but don’t do as I do. 😂
This is why domestic vacations have become far more attractive to me over the past decade. I'd rather see my own country than be around people who hate me being there.
As an Australian I'm very proud of you. Don't waste your money here, people definitely hate you as a tourist. Tourism makes previously comfy islands unlivable.
Yes sure. The politicians allow the tourists are stone drunk and politicians are to blame that tourists behavior. We can read it nearly daily in the summer in the newspapers. Maybe the politicians are to blame that tourists in some towns just give shit to privacy and occupy privat property. It is very easy to blame only ONE group. Politicians could do something about the housing issue, tourists should understand they are guests and should show respect. And the owners of houses ? They do the same as everywhere in the world : making profit. Who says not me is a liar.
@claudejeremiahgreengrassif you ask me you're the dummy here. Insulting without providing arguments. I live in a small town in aragòn and lecal farmers who lived here for generations can't buy houses for their children that are forced to migrate to big cities. Why? Because rich tourists buy away while only living here 3 months a year, so many towns are becoming empty. When you struggle to find housing because everything turned into an Airbnb, you will complain too. Tourism isn't worth it if locals can't even live well anymore
I saw one graffiti in Barcelona "Tourists unwelcome, immigrants welcome" do the Spanish not realize immigrants need housing too ? 😅 and why take it out on tourists who are spending their money?
immigrants would be leagues and bounds worse than tourists. Tourists would spend disproportionately more money in the area and take up significantly less accommodation. 1 bedroom could house hundreds of tourists a year who bring money and spend it on food, amenities, services etc. But still only occupied one bedroom. A single migrant would occupy the same space, but also occupy a job of the locals and not be spending in the area nearly as much. Also putting strain on things like the education and healthcare sectors.

Or what about car fuel sales? They account for a massive part of the economy, but it's just a net expense for all businesses and everyday people, pollutes the environment around you, while all the money goes to fat fish in foreign tax havens leaving no jobs or technology or expertise at the source. Welfare states that provide tax paid education, healthcare etc., often have more equity in high quality of life but these sectors contribute less to GDP on paper (see extremely high US healthcare and tuition costs). Restrictions on short term apartments, especially in peak season, and limits on tour group populations in each city makes sense to retain the character and culture of this lovely country.
I am a poor and ordinary Bulgarian and Spain is my favourite European country including its language placing a humble comment. But, what can you do when you made all of your country so beautiful and the climate so good even in winter? Barcelona, Mallorca, Santander, Canarias,. Not to mention how liberal, relaxed, educated and open-minded Spaniards are. It will be a very difficult task. It is super difficult not to fall in love with the country, but your position in very understable 😍
Sure but you have to understand that there are PLENTY of tourists that take advantage of our kindness and warmth (as opposed to places like Finland or Germany) and disrespect us in many ways. Tourism isn’t cheap or easy money and that is why there are all the complaints. Limiting tourism is one solution but what they should be doing is limiting the use of short term lets that are driving up property prices. Which is the one thing they won’t do as the people in power probably have investments in property.
My question to these protestors is have they never travelled outside of Spain, be it to Italy , France or Switzerland. If they have then how dare they hold signs saying tourist go home! They are barking up the wrong tree... they need to talk to their local govt offices to apply restrictions and bring laws to reduce tourists so there is a good balance to between tourism economy and affordable housing for locals.
The people who are protesting aren't the educated or professional classes, to be fair. Barcelona hosts cruise ships that disgorge thousands of people into the city for the day, but they don't stay overnight so have ZERO impact on accommodation options. Protesting against those tourists, claiming high property prices as the reason, has zero logic to it.
Don’t doubt your experiences, but understand that you wouldn’t have penetrated all aspects of civic society. Also things can be grumbling beneath the surface, before erupting publicly, like these protests
Tourists are the most ideal clientele you could have. They pay a made up tourist tax. They pay the regular tax at each transaction: leisure, accommodation, food and drinks, etc. With increasing demand they create local jobs. And most importantly, they leave. How can you be so unthankful? Don't be mad at the individuals participating in the system, be mad at the people who are supposed to shape the system to your liking.
You're clueless. Tons of tourists use illegal accommodation or Airbnb, which is a big part of the problem. Cheap tourism is growing exponentially, and they don't want that.

Esto es la queja principal: el hecho de que los servicios de renta temporal de propiedades para turistas estén dejando a miles de españoles sin un lugar donde vivir, mientras que estas propiedades sólo están siendo utilizadas por una parte del año. This is so dumb and click baity. If any country like the US or UK had its citizens attacking foreigners there would be an international outcry and sanctions. Well it depends on what the goals are. GDP equals national strength. If a country is fine being not independent in foreign or trade policy GDP can be ignored.
GDP growth translates to QoL improvement only if you are asset owner. Most of the people in rich welfare states are entitled and have high consumption rate (for their earning potential), and hence keeps on running on hamster wheel forever. Any welfare entitlement stops or prices rise, or even if they see others prospering more, they are immediately upset. @@bulthaosen1169 No it does not. The only useful thing GDP shows is potential for financial gain for big fish and to mention it at rallies. GDP has thus became a target, and consequently a bad metric.
If every third household started a backyard garden and feeds two neighbours and their own families (theoretically of course), GDP would plummet by 5-10% while starving children would drop to 0%.
Same goes for other public services and wealth like clean air, public transport and I'd wager even national defense.

Tourism isn’t cheap or easy money and that is why there are all the complaints. They should be angry at the people who are leasing out the apartments not the tourists.
Maybe leasing out their apartment is helping them pay for it as is the case where we’ve stayed in Nice. It’s an expensive city and the owner obviously lives there but rents out his place in the summer. We’re glad to have a holiday and help him out at the same time.
Agreed. But if anything.... Why be angry at the tourists? They're just trying to see a beautiful city...
Its foreign own properties almost everytime, they buy everything and pumping up the market... how can you now see this?
This is so dumb and click baity. If any country like the US or UK had its citizens attacking foreigners there would be an international outcry and sanctions. Apparently, getting assaulted with water in Barcelona is OK? This needs to be condemned by Barcelona officials and Spain or sanctions should be placed on the country. Tourism btw support Barcelona heartily; there's just a dumb populist political movement creating this current issue.
Try doing that in Cuba, the government would lock you up for 10yrs.
Sanctions? What kind exactly?
Barcelona is a woke leftist city, don't expect anything from the police.
@@str20025 The idea of sanctions is too extreme, but officials should think about educating the protestors about how tourism benefits them. Trouble is, the authorities in Barcelona are as left wing as the protestors and maybe they themselves need to be educated.
I fully understand the locals concerns. I think there are too many people with the time and finances spending most of it on holidays.
We need to think about our impact, vary and/or ration our leisure activities.
I try to go to quieter places in the UK.
Similar to Florida cities pushing back against Spring Break. While a massive economic impact, the social impact is just too much.
Not simillar at all. In Miami Beach, which is where you are talking about, it's not espresso sippers staying in 200 dollars a night airbnbs in miami beach. Its full on hood hooligan trash packing heat.
@@scottunkefer3753and what do you think it happens in Magaluf or Benidorm?
@@jorgemoyano1728 I don't know of those two places. I did live in Malaga a couple years back and have the unfortunate need to pass through south beach miami a couple times a year. It is absolutely 2 different classes of tourists. South beach couldn't get any worse. I'm sure there is euro-trash tourism in spain. But still, apples and oranges.
@@jorgemoyano1728 do people bring guns to magaluf?
Tourism brings economic growth for a small minority - and inflation for everybody else
That's untrue, tourism does not only affect a small minority from the flights, accomodations, transportation, food and services it has a great effect.
I'm yet to see a single penny from all the tourism in my town.
So much for it helping local people.
@@user-lt3nx2ys6uno. Tourism is inflationary. It promotes de industrialization and low wages of hospitality industry

21st century schizoid tourist
We found the same situation in Portugal last year. The locals, people working in cafes, restaurant and bars were very unhappy, quite angry in fact that they couldn't find places to live because of the explosion of Airbnb. It's totally understandable.
That’s not the tourist problem it’s your government’s problem for not providing housing for the people
Spain Portugal the UK France just western Europe used to have great empires that have given the world what they have today and the migrants and refugees and there children born here have today also.
Without western Europe today north and south America wouldn't exist Africa the middle East as it is today most nations in Asia and all the way to Australia and Polynesia. 50 years ago people couldn't travel around the world and whoever has decided to turn western Europe into the mess it is today specially over the past 30 years is so scared of the past that has battered the migrants and refugees and there children born here today and billions of people across the world since ww2 they have lost the plot now. You won't ever bury the history of western Europe and what our empires have turned into today and because of the way things have been done in Europe since ww2 and over the last 30 years they are not doing themselves any favours today.
It's just simple to tell you this you won't every bury the history of western Europe and what our empires have turned into today specially over the last 100 years and since ww2. Bad mistake creating a system after ww2 and here in Europe that's going to damage itself eventually and with the technology we have today they can't keep doing things how they did It in the past today.
Sorry, not the same, we in Portugal know how many of us depend of tourism.
Sad people what you are doing to western Europe let's take the UK alone. We had the biggest empire in recorded history western Europe has similar history. Tourism as it is today globally didn't exist 50 years ago and nothing like it is today. Do you think people people will ever bury that history and in eastern Europe to with a history that no one has lived but billions of people have benfited from today starting with you in north and south America today.
Restrictions will lead to higher prices for tourists. It seems that only the rich will be welcome.
The same way rapid GDP growth is been helping common Irish people in their country… the devil is in the details
exacly gdp doesnt translate to a better life for the people living there its all plus we are a tax haven so its all counted with corperate profits but that money doesnt go into the people hardly at all.
Imagine you have a shop , and you are angry to customers because they buy your products. I dont see any logic at all
You dont see the logic bc you arent a local in an area that profits most on tourism. When what keeps your lives up and running (rather poorly for majority of us financially) is a whole but of shitty westerners invading your city and space youd get sick of it too
Because there is no logic here..All this were driven by emotions...What they are doing are just attacking easy target...They can't push the politician to made the move so they prefer going to the innocent tourist...Lol 2019 in covid they talking about how bad their economy because there is less tourist yet here we are😅 People are hypocrite anyway
You’ve been probably an imbec1le all your life and did not understand anything
are you that dumb or just pretending
Imagine your neighbor opened a store next door to your house and there are hundreds of cars a day coming in. And you just want to live a quiet life.
excessively high rent seems to be global.
I see what they mean, it's made for tourists and like he said becoming too expensive, and feels like a theme park. Have to hear them out.
Workers in Europe haven't had a decent salary rise in the last 15 years. If they increase the salaries in proportion to prices then people can afford housing, food and education.
alternatively they can lower the cost of living, that i believe its the right thing to do
@@valentinkrajzelman4649 How? Shelter prices come down only during recession. And food prices never come down unless we somehow magically produce more at lower costs.
@@AH-fm7rj It would not be magic, there are many things that have gotten cheaper over time, shelter prices will come down if more are built.
