I used to work freelance for a Japanese newspaper where this sort of thing happened. On one unhappy night most of em got bored took off on an adventure to cover Unzun erupting. They were all engulfed by a pyroclastic flow. I missed that jaunt. Turned up next morning and the office was mainly empty. Did a lot of ghost writing that day. We just filled in for them, thinking they’d just crashed or something.
Another poster commented on an issue w/reverb. Dudley Wright narrated an 40+ year old recording of The Whisperer in Darkness. I felt the imperfections added greatly to a tale that pre-dated spotless audio. They were period proper and allowed the character flesh and bone, as if he was in the room relating the story to the listener personally. Most loved it, but there's always someone obsessed w/tech perfection at the expense of the "feel" of the story. A proper story has skin covering the mystery within. This version of The Night Wire comes closest to perfection, in part, because it retains the feel of past and the tenuous nature of all communication.
The Fog, The Mist, and Bird Box combined, with a Twilight Zone/Rod Serling-esque surprise ending too. Thank you for another excellent reading, Mr. French.
Very well done. I’ve read this story before, but your rendition added a note of poignancy, making it chilling...made me remember the years I worked overnight in tv news, and the type of stories we received from all over the world. You made a ghost story come alive! But then, that’s all in a day’s work for you...!
I first read The Night Wire and when I was in grade school. The story fascinated me. I had forgotten the title but never forgot the name of the town... Xebico. I googled Xebico only just, hoping to find an online copy. I found something better... This! Thank you.
Awesome reading! Ever since I heard HP Podcraft cover this story it's been one of my favorites! Also, love your inclusion in that podcast as a reader. It would be great to have more of your readings on their show. Love you channel, keep up the great work!
Jon- It's a Golden Oldie. At one time this story was one of the most popular and repeatedly re printed in pulp mags and paperback collections. Thanks for listening! E.E.F.
What an interesting ending. The whole story felt very Lovecraftian. Perhaps one of the old gods used Morgan's corpse to tell this horrifying tale? Haha. Superb as always Mr. French!
Interesting tale, seems 'similar' to a 3rd generation tale to this one, [a tale from some forgotten compendium] that leads one to assert here that what the dead Operator was 'witnessing' was in fact a Press Report of the End of the World, to come----a Biblical 'End of the World'. LoL
Hey, Robby. Thanks for commenting. That's a legitimate gripe. I'll have a serious conversation with our recording engineer "Tony" Wilson regarding this...….but, I know he will tell me your reaction is "Subjective." E.E.F.

What a pleasure to find this delightfully weird tale! Five years old and I’m just now listening to it! Sorry to be late but glad I finally got to it!
Unquestionably one of the best weird stories ever written. Another banger, Mr. French!!! Thank you.

Late to the party here, but I couldn't agree more. Its like the crackle off an old vinyl record - pure atmosphere 🤘
Wow... How much I enjoyed this one. Thank you Mr. French. I enjoy everyone of your narrations very much, you make life bearable. Cheers!

Thanks, Carlota. They say this is the most popular short story ever published in the old "Weird Tales" magazines. Cheers. E.E.F.
The reader's almost breathless pacing perfectly embraces those small hours of despair..
A magnificent story, splendidly performed - thank you!
