    I always kind of wondered how these worked. Thank you, helped us solve why our tub stopped draining-- it was corroded and no longer connected.

    I had a water problem in the celler, the ceiling was dripping water, I thought it was a underfloorheating pipe that leaked. My son insisted that I call a leakage finding company because it was complicated to judge the situation. It was a loose bathtub drain. Thanks for explaining and showing a housewife a video, we would like to know what is going on in our homes and the precautions to take. Be blessed.

    I just replaced my entire trip lever assembly and am having a hell of a time adjusting it to block the water. If I measure the distance from the lever plate down to the drain, that is the approximate length the linkage and barrel should be, correct?

    I have a frozen overflow valve stuck. I was trying to pull it up with a strong metal rod but unable to. Now i have hotspot on the floor near my bathtub. Could i have bursted hot water pipe in the process? What do you think? Is it a coincidence? Thanks

      Hi Mike! If you're cool with DIY, we've heard and seen people take off the cover plate and use a metal coat hanger or some other small hook to fish out the barrel. You would need to look up instructions on the method to remove your cover plate based on brand and model.
      Once it's off, get some light in there and use your phone's camera as a viewfinder if the opening is large enough. There should be a tiny loop that you need to hook into. If you're able to get it out, you should then be able to reattach it to the original hook on the drain plug mechanism.
      If you aren't comfortable with that or the method doesn't work out, we'd advise getting a professional plumber there to assist. Best of luck! ⭐️

    Don't buy that piece of crap with the bucket stopper. It always gets stuck and never works. Just buy the one with the pop up. Trust me

    What happens if the lever is super loose I think the stopper detached to be honest. What happens if it detaches does a plumber have to come get it out

  • @slavicvolk

    So what does it mean that once we drain the tub, a leak occurs somewhere under the tub and flows into the bedroom loser behind the tub? If it’s a shower or a smaller flow, no leaks just when it’s 1/3 full or more

    My barrel stopper is stuck in the open position. Any tricks to get it out without opening the wall. I poured rust dissolver down the overflow, dish detergent, and silicone lubricant . No help.

    • @servicestars
      @servicestars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! Without breaking down your wall, the next step would be to remove the overflow plate (the round cover with the lever on it). Every overflow plate varies from brand to brand on how to get them off, so you'll have to google your specific model if the way it's mounted isn't obvious. Sometimes they're just screwed in; sometimes they're held in by brackets and need to be gently pulled off, YMMV.
      From there, we've seen different solutions of liquids being poured down the plate opening, like boiling water + vinegar to dissolve any buildup that's seizing the barrel in place. If that doesn't work, it's worth trying to pull out the whole mechanism from the opening and inspect it for any major corrosion. That's probably the most we would comfortably advise before needing to open up the wall.
      If you're not comfortable going through with that process, we highly recommend getting a professional plumber to get their hands on it. Hope that helps!

    What the ... ?? I didn't know the overflow drain worked like THAT. That means the old-style tubs have the first few inches of drain pipe that are always within the circulation path of the bathtub water ... meaning, whatever bacteria has grown inside that short section of pipe is part of what you're bathing in. How insane!!!
    The actual tub stopper that's located INSIDE the tub is what you're going to want, because it's not absolutely disgusting.

    Is plastic better or metal better?

    • @servicestars
      @servicestars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there! We asked Eric and he said he prefers using brass but some bathtubs require specialty drains that are only available in plastic. Both materials are relatively strong and sturdy to use though; one is not necessarily a "bad" option compared to the other. Thanks for watching! ⭐️

    • @mattd3600
      @mattd3600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joeba6347 I have the same issue. The barrel is a completely stupid idea to still be in use. It creates more problems for a function that can be easily replaced with a drain plug that you can easily access in your shower. Don't know why these things are still being made.

    • @servicestars
      @servicestars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joe! Sorry I didn't see your reply; TH-cam never notifies us for replies within replies... I see it's been half a year since this comment and we hope you were able to get the barrel out!
      If not, the DIY route would involve getting a wire coat hanger, shaping it to a small C hook, removing the lever, and fishing it out of the hole. YMMV but the concept of the drain design is the same across the board. Otherwise, we'd recommend a professional plumber out to your home to get it out for you.

      Just asked our plumbing department what they thought about this. Looks like there's a debate among them now haha. We may get them on camera to get their opinions on barrel lever vs. drain plugs. Stay tuned!

    Hi i have a question. My trip lever fall apart and my water dosent drain. I've been trying to fish it out with a wire hanger but it's hard. Do the trip lever could be more underneath the pipes or you think it might be stock and close to the bathtub drain. I order a magentic long wire tool don't know how to fix it. Need some advice. Thank you.

    • @servicestars
      @servicestars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, sorry for replying a few days late! Assuming it's a drain made within the last couple of decades, it should be stock and within the bathtub drain area. There are slight variations between brands on how they designed their lever system, but the concept is the same.
      You'll have to be pulling against the suction that the barrel has created too, so it won't be as easy pulling it up with a magnet. This is one of the times we highly recommend calling up your local trusted plumber to get your problem solved.
      I think there's a few other DIY methods people may recommend, but there's risks involved that could compromise the rest of the piping. Better to get a professional set of eyes on it to also look for any other potential problems if your barrel drain system has gone bad.
      Hope that helps in some way!

  • @stevemino142

    It's quite simple really any liquid or water will always flow to the lowest spot or area...in order to maintain that rate of flow there has to be in air in the drain system or there would be no flow...most fixture units will have over flow holes that drain into a trap the part that stops drain fumes from coming into your house I've been a licensed plumber since 1986 support union plumbers

      I asked Eric and he told me its called a Tub waste overflow gasket. The gasket is behind the tub in between the back of the tub and the overflow so to replace it you need access to the rear of the tub usually that means you have to cut open the wall. Hope that helps!
