Dragon Quest XI: The Return of the (Truly) Traditional JRPG

  • For many of us, Dragon Quest -- or Dragon Warrior, as we once knew it -- was our very first taste of a genre we'd come to love. But mainline releases in the popular JRPG franchise are few and far between, making the upcoming release of Dragon Quest XI in the west so special. Not since PS2's Dragon Quest VIII, which launched outside of Japan in 2005, have we received a traditional console iteration, and it's been eight years since we even had a western entrant in the series at all. So let's take a look at a small slice of DQXI about 13 hours into the 100+ hour adventure, and show you what the combat, the menus, and the systems are all about.
    All footage was captured by CLS on a PlayStation 4 (1080p60).

    Very good first impressions review (since you only played 14 hrs). Better than most reviews because this is how a new game should be presented. Showing the mechanics of the games, instead of hyping up the game and showing unrelated footage.
    Colour me impressed.👍🏼

    You would think Colins commentary on his Let's Play makes it sound like he developed the game. Developer should just hire Colin to do their lets plays I'd rather hear him then let some PR guy bs me.

    Hey colin you are the best!
    A suggestion would be to name these kinds of videos a "let's look at" instead of "let's play". Being that this is more of an introduction and mini review for the game rather than a playthrough. I'd like to see you do this for more games! That way yu ou dont have to do a full on review for every game you play but you could still give us your opinions on the games. Keep up the stellar work!

    5:00 I kindly disagree, Colin. I can't stand random battles in any JRPG; they feel like an interruption. I vastly prefer seeing enemies and having the option to fight/avoid them, so that I'm in control of my exploration and XP levels. If devs insist on random battles, "Bravely Second" is the new industry standard for me. Players have full control of the encounter rate, and can even chain battles together to make grinding optional.

    • @dylanbyrne6766
      @dylanbyrne6766 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I understand the hate for random encounters, yet for me they add that dice roll which makes games like DQ so frustrating/challenging and interesting. Like beating a boss having about 1 hp and then all of a sudden you rolled an enemy tile and die. Its what makes great stories to tell friends etc.

    • @kubeface115
      @kubeface115 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was a teenager I used to turn my nose up at the common whining about random battles, but now I almost instinctively groan every time one initiates. The fact that you can run away from them effectively leaves you with the same choice as non-random battles, except with added tedium via loading screens.
      @Dfwmbistg - Yeah I can see that. I guess one guy's story-worthy situation is another man's frustrating situation.

    The only thing I dislike about JRPGs is the fact that the gear never affects character models. I love to have visual progress, if I find a cool helmet, I want to see it on the character, not just an icon in the menu. Otherwise, looking great. Recently started playing Tales series and love it, this will be next on the list.

    Hey Collin. This is completely unrelated to Dragon Quest XI, but thank you. Thank you for everything you do: for inspiring me and others with the success CLS and everything before, for protecting the importance of real conversations and free speech, and most of all for being you. You’re a brilliant dude, seriously - you really are. I know that people try to beat you down and want you to lose (I just listened to fireside chats EP 50) but for every hater there’s someone like me who is constantly inspired by you and appreciative of you. Keep up the amazing work, and try your best to give yourself a break every now and then because you deserve it. I hope that I can build something like you’ve built cls. Thank you for inspiring that dream.

    So hyped for this game. Been waiting for it since it got announced back in 2015. I wonder if the game will actually be 100 hours. People always say that about DQ games but even 8 only took me like 61 or so hours to beat the main story. Not a big fan of side quests personally.
    The only game that has natively taken me 100+ hours to beat the main story was..... Persona 5. Get on it Colin. Also great video.

    • @jackapplebaum5678
      @jackapplebaum5678 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always have to factor in that dev math, yeah. Specifying all the content in those estimates always makes your game sound beefier.

    • @deceit6639
      @deceit6639 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah dev math is always misleading in that regard. But people who play the games in general can also be really misleading about them too. Like I have had people tell me absurd things like FFX's main story took them 70-100 hours, or FF7 was a 70+ without sidequests. Are these people on drugs? Did they fall asleep with the game on? Games that are like 20-25 hours touted as 70+ hour games. DQ 8 heard people say it took them 200 hours for the main story a few times. zzz. So much misinformation.

      A "short" amount of time, so yes, it was. Having to cast a spell to avoid them over and over doesn't make it tolerable. People who defend random encounters need to go randomly walk into traffic.

    They've definitely switched dragon quest to visible enemies since 9. When they remade 7 and 8, both of those had visible enemies as well. Some have definitely argued that you end up fighting more enemies with visible enemies than with random battles because there's often choke points that force you to fight the enemies there.

    Looks good. I still have to play Tales of Beseria and Nino Kuni 2! Too many fun niche games!

    Friends, I never played any Dragon Quest game. I always feel a bit overwhelmed when I look at a big franchise like this one, I never know where to begin, and sometimes I end up not playing them at all. But I love jrpgs, and this game looks perfect for me. Do you think it's OK starting with this one not having played any of the previous games?

      I'm pretty sure none of the stories relates with each other. It's kinda like how the Final Fantasy series is structured.

    Is there a character creation?
    Cause every video I've seen has the same player character

    I'll definitely play this but I can't decide if I want to play it now on PS4 or wait for Switch. I always prefer JRPGs on handhelds, but... I don't wanna wait.

      Could buy it physical for PS4 then trade it in when it becomes available on the Switch and replay the whole game :D

      probablysanny It will probably still be worth a decent amount. JRPG's seem to hold their value a bit better than more mainstream titles.
