Hi im a Mazda Master Tech, please dont waste your time and money doing this, the plugs are iriduim plugs and good to 120000km , if you clean them you can damage them more as the iridium will just fall off and plugs will fail even faster as they cannot take the heat .please replace your plugs every 100000km so they dont seize ,cleaning them is a good way to foul your plugs ,spend the 60 bucks that your saving not paying a tech to do it on plugs new plugs have a coating on threads to prevent seizing do not add oil or antisieze or dielectric just making a bigger mess and please do not over torque heads will crack and a 60 job can turn into 2000 dollar job fast
1. I agree. 2. my friends 2014 CX5 2.5L says the plugs are good until 75k (rep. at dealership service said they last 75k to 100k, other than that he wasnt much help) her car has 86k miles on it, you think its time to change them?
and thank you for the anti-seize and dielectric grease advice, I'm curious about the new cars and how they're different. i'd still disconnect the battery first tho...
the manual owners says never clean with metal brush because you can damage the spark plugs that means you can clean it with a toothbrush, and try to not let it long time because the corrosive liquid can damaged the layers of the park plugs so another thing to add, here in mexico the parks plugs need a replacement every 40,000 km because the fuel is bad quality, i make a test and check the sparks plugs from 0 km to 40 000 km and they look baaaad as hell and the SUV went to the maintenance every 6 months so the golden rule is every 6 months check the spark plugs and if they look smoked or even with a layer of withe burn it needs to replace to keep the engine in good conditions. i mean, i prefer to change spark plugs every year more than wasting more fuel and even damage the engine at 4 years of use. everyone could be able to check their owns vehicles to determine it if it need a replacemente of something for example the engine air filter its another that i think it needs to be replaced ever 15 000 km depending where you live and first check it with your own eyes and if its dirty just clean with air compressed and if it looks ugly and old it needs a reclacement to prevent any problems.
RGK has a advice not to use anti-seize, it damages the threads and can break off. I normally change them out at 50,000 with Ruthenium HX and if I still have at 100,000 I will change the coils. Rockauto best prices.
To anyone watching this, DO NOT do this. Its not a 2 stroke lawn mower. The plugs DO NOT need cleaning, you will just wreck things. Replace at the recommended interval. Also, NGk say not to add anti sieze with new plugs, they already have a coating on the threads. I cannot stress how much of a waste of time and money this is.
This is the first video I have ever seen someone cleaning spark plugs, i usually just throw them away and get a new set of plugs and replace them, I might just try this next time.
Wouldn't recommend putting anti seize on those threads. The torque figures assume the threads are dry and with the coating detailed by the OEM. Adding anti seize and torquing to the same value you can over tighten and damage the threads. Cleaning the threads up is good enough. Other than that all good 👍
Despite what everybody says that don't fiddle with the spark plugs I still do this. Everybody has their own experience and know-how on engines. I know where you're coming from and I guess you seldom go to the dealership for maintenance. It's nice to see someone else is doing this. I also work on my own car since I was a teenager and I learned a lot. For some it might seem pointless to do this or even harm the engine yes that's true if you don't know what you're doing. But there are some days where I just pay a mechanic to do it, but he can't fool anyone because you have the knowledge, which is my point. Have some experience doing it, it's easy to throw money at it. Haha

Torque spec is determined by the size of threads, the manufacture of the spark plug, and whether you apply something to the threads like anti-seize. 1) Thread Size - just like a bolt, each thread size has a different torque spec. Check manufacture website. Ex. Just changed some plugs out on a 2009 CR-V and installed NGK plugs with a 14 mm thread require 25 - 30 Nm. There website gives detailed info regarding torque specs (see below) --> www.ngk-sparkplugs.jp/english/techinfo/qa/q18/index.html 2) Manufacture - see #1 above. I'm sure other manufactures have similar info 3) Adding anything to the threads acts as a lubricant. Torque specs are defined as "wet" or "dry" where wet indicates something is added to the threads. A wet torque is always lower than dry torque. Some NGK says anti-seize isn't necessary because the threads are coated already.
