Modern evangelical Christianity defines a free gift the same way they offer free gifts from their ministries provided you make a contribution first.

Very true. It isn't a gift if we have to make contributions.

Either that or they teach that you can battle sin in the flesh.

Amen to this wonderful truth and true biblical preaching, a few years ago I was one of the lordship types, praise God for the truth. I hate the false calvinistic/Armenian lordship gospel

According to Jesus Christ we can know him by faith. Can I know Christ and be lost at the same time? According to Jesus's "I never knew you." A person can actually know Jesus Christ according to Jesus Christ!

I'm from Utah and came out of Mormonism . Calvinism is just as bad as Mormonism. They are both salvation by works.

Are you referring to Pastor Terry Long with Calvary Chapel Salt Lake? His teachings are definitely calvinism

How can you get saved from John 316? The death, burial and resurrection isn't in that passage and you have to understand that to be saved.

Most people understand about the birth of Jesus Christ, the stable and the three wise men. What they do not know is by through Him, by belief in Him, we will be saved. If you still feel the need for a better explanation I'll let another brother answer you as this is on my phone. I hope you have a nice week.

It's important to understand what we are looking at regarding the Bible, God's word, is that it's not only the inspired word of God, but also a very real historical document. Real time was played out and there is a process to the unfolding of events. So at this time, Jesus hadn't died yet and hadn't resurrected from the dead, but even so, if you read before John 3:16 in verses 14-15, it is implied that Christ was to be LIFTED up. Lifted up for what? In verse 16, it says God GAVE His only Son, GAVE Him for what? Prophecies in the old testament already gave understanding that the Messiah would die and how He would die. So the message was still the same, believe Christ , who He is ( God in the flesh ) and what He came to do which was to save, cleanse or forgive sins. Anyone who did trust, have faith in Christ was forgiven. Now after Christ's death burial and resurrection, the message was specific which is found in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. So my point is, the revelation of what Christ came to do, die for the world wasn't made obvious until afterwords when He did die and resurrect. This is evidenced by many things but one example was the disciples' confusion about Christ's death and not being made clear to them until afterwords , where Christ had to prove in many ways He really had risen 1 example is Thomas who denied believing it to be true until he was assured of it by feeling Christ's nail peirced hands and peirced side.

To complete the answer to your question, when we look at John 3:16 today in 2023, we have the FULL revelation , the full complete cannon of scripture from beginning to end, we can know it is referring to the Gospel of 1 corinthians 15:1-4 because we can skip ahead to that time period in history when that truth is revealed. so you could say we have a birds eye view of the entire history of time, from start to finish. But people at that time during Jesus' earthly ministry, they did NOT have the ability to see what we have the privilege to see, so the saving message then we believe in who Jesus is, God in the flesh, the Messiah and that He forgives sin, that the one who believes in Him will never die. We see this example in John 11:23- 27 with Martha's conversation with Jesus questioning her on what she believes concerning Himself.

Jesus is very plainly explaining a passage from the Old Testament in Numbers 21 about the brazen serpent that was lifted up on a pole. The people were being bitten by poisonous snakes and were dying. Keep in mind Jesus is talking to a man who was one of the major teachers of the Old Testament law, Nicodemus, but Nicodemus did not understand the spiritual meaning of that passage and no doubt many other passages because he was in spiritual darkness. Jesus clearly tells him that the uplifted brass serpent on the pole is a picture of Jesus Christ or the Messiah being lifted up on the cross and bearing our sins. He clearly tells him if anyone by faith looks to Jesus bearing their sins that they could be forgiven and given eternal life just as those in the passage in Numbers were given physical life when they simply looked at the uplifted serpent. Now that is a PERFECT application and interpretation of scripture done by the Son of God Himself. I can add nothing to it or take anything from it. If a person understands that Jesus Christ, the one who bore our sins on the cross paid our penalty they can have eternal life, but if you don't believe you will remain under condemnation. Here is the Old Testament passage that should be compared to John 3:1-20 bible.timelesstruths.org/Numbers%2021:4-9
      bible.timelesstruths.org/John%203:1-20
Bear in mind the vast majority of people know about the resurrection of Christ already. The Pharisees DID believe in a resurrection while the Sadducees rejected it. Jesus told Nicodemus all he needed to know to get born again and I believe Nicodemus was born again as evidenced by what he did later in the gospel account of John.
