I was with my wife for 30 years until her passing in 2016. I always referred back to this song with all the hard times and struggles we faced.. its an anthem to our lives together.. You two are lovely together and where ever your future brings you, remember this song for its message will bring you closer in troubled times
I should of said before but you missed something in the video behind the couple there was a total eclipse of the sun which signifies depression and then it passes which signifies coming out of it and back to the light (good times). When asked about the video Peter said that spending a day hugging Kate Bush was never going to be difficult. Before he did the video he told his wife the plan and she was the one who said you need to get Kate Bush to sing it with you. His songs Games without Frontiers, Solsbury Hill, Biko (read up about it before listening) and ofcourse Sledgehammer are must listens as well as his early stuff with Genesis. I see music as a journey like life as you never stop learning and discovering new things, the trick is to make sure you have fun doing it.

As someone who has been fighting depression for over 20 years, with a couple of suicide attempts. This is my go to song whenever the dark place is approaching. Whilst I don't have a significant other in my life, I do have lots of good friends (who in my mind are saying the lyrics that Kate Bush sings). I've watch a number of reaction videos to this song (which is phenomenal), but it seems like almost all of them miss the point of what he is talking about, which is that he is contemplating suicide. And this loving embracing voice/spirit/angel/family member encourages him to "not give up" that he is loved and valued. Listen again at 6:15 where he is talking about "standing on that bridge and looking down" and realizing that the river below is always there, waiting, no matter what comes and goes, seemingly calling to him and beckoning him to take his life due to the tremendous sorrow and depression he is feeling. Powerful stuff. But I also love how it ends in an uplifting beat, with the eclipse in the video gone and the sun shining again. You just experienced a mans journey into the his deepest despair, and living to sing about it.

This was written for veterans coming home from the war . No one gives vets a chance after war . Many people have been inspired by this. People who may have committed suicide were saved by this song!

Recommend listening to songs like this with high quality headphones. It's a dream to listen to (especially on very high fidelity CD on which it was originally released). This entire album was amazing to listen to when it came out. Peter Gabriel's music is always brilliant.

At the beginning, the moon starts to cover the sun, is when the man is starting to feel lost and down.. by the middle (total darkness) he is standing on a bridge, looking below, but the sun starts to peak out again, and - with Kate Bush's angelic support - he starts to feel more positive.

The first time I heard this song was an episode of Miami Vice when Don Johnson character Sonny Crockett was a fishing boat, the boat exploded n he survived with amnesia n he became his alter ego Sonny Burnett a crime boss himself that killed a couple of mafia guys n almost killed his partner Ricardo Tubbs aka Phillip Michael Thomas n somehow he was starting to get his memory back n the song Don't Give Up was playing n it showed him at the beach in Miami then he went to his police headquarters n he's see's his locker saying Crockett then he goes into the main office n all his co-workers drew their guns at Crockett.
