Hey tinker thanks for helping me out and now it's my turn to help you out OK
So about geting my lifters out of my 02 sporty so if you take it down to the rockers and leave the heads on you can pull the lifter tubs out and you then get the lifter out

Thanks for the vid Boss. Will this apply to a '97 FLHTC ?

Glad you liked the video, unfortunately no it doesn't apply to a 97. It applies to 2000 and up. The pin on a 97 is pressed in.

Do you have the part numbers for the pawl, the spring and the snap ring? Im having some difficulty finding the snap ring online. Trying to do this without going to the stealership.

No I don't have part #. But you should be able to find what you need at JP, Dennis Kirk, Baker Drive Train, Jim's etc. Thanks for watching and ride safe

When my 2003 Ultra was about 7 years old, a spring broke in the trans. The shifter simply flopped down. I was able to ride 100 miles back home by finessing the shifter. The dealership did the repair under the extended warranty. I never had the problem again. In 2016 I put a Screaming Eagle 6 speed transmission in the bike, so I suppose it's the newer design. I assume this was the spring you are referring to, or was it that big coiled spring around the shaft? If the spring broke like I say, was I super lucky that a broken piece didn't fall off and get caught in the gears? Thanks for all this good information.

I've had the same experience myself, only my pawl shifter was worn out. Did the same thing as you nursed it home. Dreaded each time I came up on a stop street or traffic light, than had to fight it all over again to upshift. The top spring is the one I was talking about. The lower spring rarely goes bad because it's a much heavier spring. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.

Do the shafts ever break or is it the spring usually

Thanks for the question, the shafts can break but you have literally beat the hell outta the trans to break a shaft. The most common problem is the pawl spring losing strength causing the pawl shifter to skip the pins on the drum. The other is the pawl shifter just wears out. Thanks for watching

The follow up video is called "Remove and Replace Pawl Spring on Harley 5 Spd trans. If you go to my home channel page you'll see playlists. In the playlists you'll find transmissions. The video is in that playlist. Thanks for watching

Hi Tinker, hope you are well, how do you know if your poll shifter is starting to go bad?

    • @tinkeringwithharleys
      @tinkeringwithharleys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Duane all is well here hope all is good with you. When the pawl shifter starts going bad or the spring weakens, when you shift the pawl will slip over the shift drum pins. You will get no resistance at all at the shifter it will slide all the way back and you will remain in the same gear.

Hey tinker it's Clark I think I need to change my lefters and it looks like I have to take the heads off on my 2002 sporty 1200 I was hoping to take the cams out and take them out from the lower end but I think I am not that lucky

Hey Clark, how you doing. I haven't worked on a Sportster since the mid 70's. On the Evo, twin cams you don't need to take the rocker boxes off. On these you get a set of quickie push rods and cut the stock push rods with a bolt cutter. That allows you to remove the push rods without taking the rocker boxes off. You can than get at the lifters and cams. This is how I do it for the bigger motors. I don't know if you can do it with a Sportster but worth looking into.

No problem, S&S makes quickie push rods and tubes also lifters. There a little pricey but worth it.

It depends on the year. 1999 and older it can't. Anything after 1999 yes. Thanks for watching and ride safe.

Would this be the same as an S&S 5 speed ?

Thanks for the question, unfortunately I can't answer your question. I've never taken a S&S apart. Thanks for watching
