  • Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterium that causes Bacterial Leaf Scorch (called Pieces Disease in grapes). This pathogen invades the xylem (water conducting tissue within the tree) and causes premature browning towards the middle or end of the growing season.
In North Texas, Bacterial Leaf Scorch commonly impacts Elm and Sycamore trees, and is spread primarily by an insect called a glassy-winged sharpshooter.
There are not effective treatments for the pathogen or causal agent, though proper management can delay onset and extend the longevity of the tree in the landscape.
