@@Fortefyre Lucky bastard, my parents had to buy Super Mario 64 seperately (as I think happened to most kids)...got Yoshi's Story and WCW vs. nWo: World Tour also.
Even against more modern first-person shooters, Goldeneye 007 is my favorite. Something about the aiming controls and the way enemies react to getting hit makes it feel punchier than any other I’ve played. In Halo, for example, it feels more like you’re melting aliens with a heat gun. It’s hard to even tell if your shots are hitting sometimes.
Good points on Goldeneye. Perfect Dark became the game that Goldeneye should've been, but no one talks about. You threw some iffy ones in there that could've indeed caused backlash, but you backed it up. Cheers
The thing about GoldeEye is, you have to think of it in its time. Sure we already had Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM already but they weren't as interactive with friends. Sure we recognized the jenky graphics at times even back in the day but the fun factor was just amazing. We'd have every kid in the neighborhood over playing for hours and laughing endlessly. Same with Smash Bros.
@@Fortefyre I thought Super Mario 3 was better than Mario 64. It was just different. But with 007 I agree and to think it was a last minute add on! I won't bring up Odd Job 😉
Diddy Kong Racing is a very good kart racer, but man, Naughty Dog built on everything DKR established and improved it in every way with Crash Team Racing only two years later.
Quest 64 seems properly rated to me, a fun experience but pretty middle of the pack. Mario, Starfox and MK 64 I would say are still great to this day so I disagree there. The one that I do agree with though is DK64. Found myself to be pretty underwhelmed with that one. I would have to play it again though. Fun video as always! I appreciate hearing people's opinions on games and there's nothing wrong with going against the grain if a mainstream game didn't really "do it for you." I used to talk about how The Legend of Zelda on the NES was one of my favorites until I started being honest with myself and admitted that Zelda 2 is far better in my personal opinion. Still like the original, but the sequel tickles my fancy way more than the first one ever could.
I pride myself on my straightforward nature, like I mentioned, I can't take away anyone's memories, that's silly, right. I think having these discussions in the future many years after the release of these time cherished games refreshes interest in it, it allows us to go back and remember a time where the art, music, and gameplay captivated us.
Oh yeah, you're definitely right about Kirby 64. The combination abilities that worked so well in Gunstar Heroes are flat busted here (turn into a fridge and you throw projectiles that not only damage enemies but HEAL YOU. God mode, in a Kirby game?), but it's the supreme slowness that kills the game for me. I pray for death in the underwater scenes.
to Fortefyre= I know I'm about to earn the ire of the grand majority of my fellow pro-wrestling videogame enthusiasts; but there's one game I considered overrated on the good old N64 and that's "WWF No Mercy"! besides the flawless control scheme, I just don't see what else is so hot about it! again, just IMO... Good Energy, Good Vibes!
And then I am one of those rare gamers who loved Quest 64 and I have been playing RPGs for the majority of my life. I don't know what it is about it. I just really liked it.
I think I loved it because it was the first time I played anything like an action rpg. Like he said in the video, it threw the established designs out the window. Perhaps the fresh take drew many of us in, even if it was kind of crap looking back.
Love your channel man, been watching from the beginning. I gotta say, calling Mario kart 64 and Mario 64 overrated is one of the most unexpected things I’ve ever heard. Not being hyperbolic. It’s like saying Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird are all overrated. Once you finish Mario kart you’re done with it? No sir, you played it with your friends every single time you got together for years. We all did back then. Just astonishing to hear you say that. Ok, I got that out of my system. Thanks for talking the time to make the cool content man! And those Bungie folks most def lived on goldeneye multiplayer.
LMFAO, you know I looked that up after the video, because it's where I got my expansion pack lol. I was like..."oh god the comment section is going to go wild".
Best part about goldeneye is the music. Mario 64 also has good music. A lot of these games have great opening levels for a few hours but as they try to add difficulty it comes at the expense of fun.
Good music, most definitely! I remember playing it and my Mom in the next room commenting how 'pretty' the song was. Asking what level was that. I was on the underwater area.
I actually agree with most of these. I mean, a lot of those games were great for their time but they don't really hold up today especially when you have better modern counterparts. Like I'm not going to play Mario Kart 64 or Super Mario 64 now when I can have a better time playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey on Switch. And there are better Kirby games now too, I'd rather play Return to Dreamland or Forgotten Land than Kirby 64.
I remember wanting to love Quest 64 so bad because I had gotten an N64 despite loving RPGs and it was like the one great hope outside if Ocarina of Time. And well.
I agree with most of this list. However, the ones that had me shaking my head were Starfox and Mariokart. I genuinely think Starfox was the best n64 game. I still love it today. Yeah the story might be a little lacking but the actual gameplay is fantastic. The opening of other routes, the unlocking tanks and little guys for multiplayer was such a blast. Mariokart was just tons of fun. Great couch co-op times. A great game for just having fun without having to get all sweaty. I think the only reason 007 is "overrated" is because it doesn't hold up anymore. However, when it was out, I don't think there was a more impactful game in terms of those 90's pizza nights with friends. I still got my n64 and the reason I still have it is Starfox, Mariokart and Marioparty(and the game that I have a character of me in and I'm in the credits).
While I respect the N64 for revolutionized 3D gaming, most of there games have age. Not all of them. But an good chunk of them. And they are overhyped for getting to much praised they get. The 2 games that I considered the most overrated ones is Banjo-Kazooie & Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Banjo-Kazooie is just an bigger & overwhelming version of Super Mario 64. I do like that once you get the main mcguffin, you can continue to other missions for that and not get boot out of the level to pick an mission like Mario 64 did. I'll give it that. But besides that, I found every level an little too big & the amount of collectables you have to progress is absurd. What's even worst is that if you die, you have to collect the music notes all over again; which I heard was fixed in the 360 version. But still. That's dumb. I also found controlling Banjo & Kazooie way too wonky. I never played Tooie and some might argue it's better. But others say it's worst. So I don't know and I don't care. As for Ocarina of Time, oh boy! Where do I begin? Often considered to be the greatest game ever made is an farfetch. Don't you think? Now look. I can see how this & Super Mario 64 help influence the franchise and video games in general and in such, I respect that. But for Ocarina of Time specifically, I'll never understand the praise it gets. I found the world of Hyrule way too big & empty. There's no variation or anything that's happening and traveling through the world is an slog cause Link has no items for something to speed up. Not even Epona I feel can go fast enough. Traveling through many areas in Hyrule is an chore. I also think the dungeons are the weakest in the series. Mainly because there an total pushover with no complex, clever puzzles, challenge & uniqueness it offers. The only ones I found decent is Inside Deku Tree because of it's traverse progression & Spirit Temple because you can be both Young & Adult Link in the same dungeon and was pretty clever of it's design. The rest were bland & boring; like Dondongo Cavern & Fire Temple and there are others that I found obnoxious & tedious to progress like the Forest Temple, Water Temple especially and Shadow Temple. The inventory are very situational and only use in that dungeon you get. And the bosses are an pushover. The story is ok. But I care less about the characters or worlds that's happening cause they don't have anything about them that I can relate. And lastly in terms of the structure & layout, this game is A Link to the Past in 3D. The story about gods & the Trifoce, go to the first 3 dungeons, get the Master Sword, go to bigger dungeons where there more challenging, you know how it is if you played A Link to the Past before. At least with Super Mario 64, it was trying to be it's own thing and wasn't trying to be like Mario 3 or World in 3D. So yeah. That's my hot take on OoT. I respect the game. But no way is it " the greatest game ever made " as alot of people bring up.
You know, I almost added Ocarina of Time on here, but I couldn't break through the nostalgia goggles without blowing smoke out my ass. The comments you added, perfectly encapsulate what I would have wanted to say, but didn't know how to put it in words, so thank you!
Great video you bourbon scented beast! I have to admit never owning an N64, only renting it two times to play conker. Never really clicked with it and skipped the whole system entirely. So, yes, I never did and never will play Golden Eye. *pitchforks down please* 😂
Well, with the exception of Mario 64 and Goldeneye, I actually did find myself agreeing with the vast majority of the list. Stadium? I honestly think more folks will agree with you on that one nowadays thanks to NSO adding it in and making it half the game that it is thanks to the lack of GB Pokémon titles and what seems to be an unwillingness on the part of Nintendo/GF/TPC to come up with a workaround that would allow for some sort of virtual Transfer Pak functionality with said games should they ever get released on NSO. I personally doubt they will put them on NSO as they'd actually make MORE money from something like a Gen 1/2/3 collection of games that have new compatibility/functionality with Home added in. Half the fun of the Stadium games came from using your own teams from the GB games thanks to the Transfer Pak, as well as the massive amount of extra storage space the game gave you. Sure, you could beat the game with rental Pokémon, but that was more of an exercise in frustration than anything else. Quest? In some ways it felt too simplistic, and I frankly feel the ONLY reason that game is looked at fondly is due to the fact that it's on a system that is extremely RPG starved. Conker? Yeah, it was a hilarious subversion of some of the things we came to expect from 3D platformers/collect-a-thons of the time, but it was a late release in a post-PS2 world. Also didn't help that DK64 more or less killed the genre for a bit outside of Mario titles. DKR? Always felt like it was a pale imitation of Mario Kart. Star Fox? Sure, the game was plenty of fun, but at the core it was still an arcade style rail shooter with the occasional open 3D area. These sorts of games always come with a shelf life, in this case being opening up Expert Mode via all medals, then doing it again on Expert. Mario Kart, I don't 100% agree with, but I can see why it'd make the list. Doesn't matter if we're talking about a kart racer, a NASCAR game, an F1 game, etc. These games are ALWAYS notorious for rubber band AI, so it's more of an illusion of challenge with a large dose of the computer being a cheating bastard on top of it. The real fun from these games comes from having friends to play it with, and if you're lacking that then it tends to get old fast. Even if you have the friends however, the novelty wears off if there is a big skill gap, and it ALWAYS seems like I know at least one person in my friend groups that'll complain about items deciding one too many races. Kirby? Can't comment, never played it, but I find it to be Nintendo's most overrated franchise. Played the first game and the NES game, never found them fun 🤷♂ DK64? Sure, it's a fun game, but as I alluded to earlier, I feel this is the game that killed collect-a-thons for many of us with the absolutely absurd amount of shit one has to do to 100% the game. I personally hate bringing up The Completionist following his charity/fraud scandal, but when Jirard had to redo DK64, I really got the sense that he was NOT looking forward to that episode. Now, as for the other two games? Well, I feel like it's easy to hate on them with nearly 30 years of hindsight (and holy crap, that is a sentence and length of time that fills me with existential dread when it comes to the N64.....), but one needs to remember the impact both games had moving forward. Mario 64 is to this day the blueprint for just about any 3D platformer. Doesn't matter if the game is a massive collection fest or fairly straightforward, in both cases the game has taken SOMETHING design wise from Mario 64. And while Goldeneye is erroneously remembered as the "first" FPS by many, it too laid the future groundwork for the genre. Sure, someone MIGHT have eventually come across the exact formula and gameplay loop with objective based gameplay, but I don't think the impact would have been felt nearly as much partly due to the lack of the James Bond license following the resurgence of the series in the mid-90s, especially as Pierce Brosnan for many of us 80s/90s kids is OUR 007. The FPS likely would have been dominated by more Doom clones for longer than we could have imagined as it seems like game developers tend to operate in cycles of "follow the leader" and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Hell, I'd go so far to say that without Goldeneye, the genre as a whole would have been set back to a point where even games that aren't considered to be FPS titles but merely use the camera angle could have been affected. I honestly cannot see a game like Mirror's Edge existing in a world where Goldeneye didn't come along and experiment with the genre.
You have your right to your opinion. I don’t judge as it is your opinion. Some I don’t agree with but it’s all good. It’s like I tell people, ‘I love Led Zeppelin, but Zeppelin isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.’ It was still an awesome video like the others. Keep them rolling.
Wow. Hornet's next is well and truly kicked here LOL. Especially as a whole bunch of my favourite N64 games just kept appearing on the list and I'm repeatedly saying to myself, "No way, not this one too". 😂 But all's good as valid points were made I have to respect that you are indeed entitled to your opinion
Hot take list! Agree with you on most of them. It’s a raw console, kinda like Atari 2600 in a way. First of its kind, setting a tone, leaving much to be improved upon
It really is. It's one of the last unique consoles, rather than being just another x86 super computer in a fancy shell. The problem is, I don't enjoy the mouthfeel of the games. The low frame rates, the blurry polygons, and the short draw distances make 3D games feel like vaguely remembered dreams.
That HAL labs thing I was not aware of. It makes total sense when you explain it. Also, my Dad worked for IBM when i was a kid. Well actually, he first worked for a company called CPT, then went to IBM at some point. I'm not sure if CPT went under or got bought out or what.
Oh wow! CPT went under in the mid 90s, they just couldn't break into the market against the competitors. My dad had a CPT 8000, looked like a toaster with a keyboard.
@@Fortefyre Wow, I'm actually a bit surprised you know of CPT. Yeah, I remember he had a CPT tie pin and the company colors were ugly brown, ugly light brown, and tan.
GREAT list! i couldn't agree more! you really nailed the low points of these games most people rate high. thoroughly impressive video here being able to take off the rose colored glasses and be honest and accurate about games you yourself like. it takes integrity
There's good and bad to every game, I've yet to find the PERFECT game out there, you know? I might never, but I get to check out some cool stuff along the way.
Quest 64 has never been overrated by anybody. The rest of these are not overrated at all. The problem is probably that you're judging these games by modern standards which is totally unfair. You definitely did that when talking about GoldenEye. You have to judge a game for it's time. I would also point out that while GoldenEye was definitely the start of the FPS era for consoles, FPS games were a big deal on PC since the early 90's. There were FPS games on consoles before GoldenEye, and there were FPS games on PC before the early 90's, but they were few and the genre hadn't taken off in popularity yet.
Oh lord are you tripping. I saw Dk racing, and then you went even farther after that. You better be able to find better games for the same console that are similar. These games invented the formula that was built upon to create what we have now. But tbh, some of these games arent particularly loved by the community anyways
Actually Goldeneye being number one among the most overrated N64 games makes a lot of sense. This game is so fondly remembered yet it's spiritual successor perfect dark which was also a great success in its own right Is a far better game and an improvement in every conceivable way. But people don't really talk about perfect dark that much at least in comparison. Don't get me wrong I grew up in the '90s and played a lot of N64 and I loved playing GoldenEye especially on the multiplayer but perfect dark has way more features for its multiplayer and it has just a much better campaign as well. Not to mention a co-op campaign and of course something that I don't think I've ever seen since or before which was the counter op campaign which which is to play the missions of the campaign with one person being the hero Joanna Dark and the other person being one of the enemy soldiers trying to take her down. Also having the same disadvantages of the regular soldiers by AI that have less health. You killed a person who controls a soldier and then they spawn taking the place of another soldier. It's a lot of fun! I don't agree with you about Kirby 64 especially since I've never had any issues with the controls in that game. I think kirby64 is a lot of fun and for a long time it was among my top two or three favorite Kirby games ever made. Up there with Kirby Superstar on the SNES, but to be honest Kirby games have actually gotten even better over the 2010s then how good they already were in the 1990s. Kirby's return the dreamland, Kirby triple deluxe which had been my favorite Kirby game for quite some time, and of course Kirby planet robobot. And I know a lot of people weren't in love with Kirby star allies but I thought that game was pretty awesome too. And someday I will play through more of Kirby and The forgotten land and beat that because that's awesome.
@@Fortefyre Yeah Kirby is a pretty huge franchise. I'd say it only slowed down a bit in the 2000s and I wouldn't even say it slowed down by that much. The issue is there weren't any console main series games. The only console Kirby game I could think of in 2000s of side from Kirby 64 would be Kirby's air ride. But of course the GBA and the DS had several Kirby games back then so that made up for the lack of console ones. Although one of the reasons why there was a lack of console curvy games at the time was because there was a Kirby game that was being made for the GameCube that You should still be able to look up some footage of right here on TH-cam because I remember seeing footage of like some demos of this game way back in the late 2000s, but ultimately that game was never released and got repurposed into becoming Kirby's return to Dreamland on the Wii in 2011. And then after that they're just kept being a whole bunch of other Kirby games like there used to have been so many released in the '90s
GoldenEye is praised for laying the foundation instead of just being licensed shovelware. Perfect Dark being by design the superior direct spiritual successor that was that bigger badder sequel in all but license and birthed Rare's own next great mascot in Joanna Dark instead proved that GoldenEye did its job well.
Starfox 64. Wow. That was indeed a fave of mine, but i think mainly because of the hype Nintendo Power drummed up. I also loved the game, getting all the mdals and such. But i mever co sidered the plot. It was shooty shoots! Starfox 2 did have an interesting take though, and i wish they had expanded the story in 64. Feels like missed potential.
Starfox 64 has always been...iffy to me, like as a kid I liked it, and I can see why everyone did. I owned a SNES Classic for a few weeks before I gave it to my neighbor, so I didn't really get into it.
@nessdbest8708 Or...you could keep up witht the community page where I said I was stepping away for a few days to move my family. Common sense is absolutely free, like it costs nothing.
i've always preferred banjo kazooie/tooie over sm64 (didn't even like playing it back in the day), I agree 100% it's overrated. Watching other people speedrun it is fun but I just don't like playing it
I'd probably agree with all of these if I'd grown up with the N64. Or if I owned the games back in the day. I once thought the blurry bold primaries of Mario 64 was gouge out my eyes ugly, and Goldeneye would be considered too on the nose to work as a parody in any universe it wasn't real. But in 2024, a minimalist, glorified rail shooter that isn't glorifying torture or lying about war crimes? That sounds appealing as Hell. If I can change my mind on Mario 64...the good parts, anyways... Well, who knows what else I missed out on? Also, those Rare platformers sound really appealing in a "I played GBA Lego Star Wars just to have more things to collect while I listen to podcasts" sort of way. So, thank you for the recommendations. As an outsider to most games on the system, this video made them sound way more fun than all the carefully crafted worship I normally find. (Okay, maybe not DK64...I never met anyone who likes it. I'll probably get frustrated too, but...ever find a game you knew you were going to have a rough time with, but you couldn't ignore it?)
I try to still find some good in the games I don't like, unfortunately the N64 is plagued with tons of more "experimental" 3D worlds from developers, they would figure it out, but it was definitely a test bed for many franchises.
@@Fortefyre I think that's why I love that generation. You really don't know what you're getting into sometimes, and there's a sense that neither did the developers. It feels like the kind of exploration that's increasingly difficult to find in an information age.
The fact n64 didnt have something like sega channel to give u access to games like xbox live did years later is crazy to me. N64 could have been the first streaming service like xbox live should have been if the tried their hand at movies. I love sega channel. I used to lick the cable wire that u plug into the back of it cuz it tastes like electicity.
SEGA Channel was so goated omfg... to this day i miss it. i convinced my old man to get it for me, it was a pretty easy convincing too, rather than pay $50 and up for one game, i had access to almost all of them, for a measly $10 a month. my old man knew math and could see how much this would save him in the long run. *sigh* the following 2 years was some of the best days of my life...
Oh there 100% was a service like the Sega Channel for the N64, but it was only in Japan, and only for the failed Nintendo 64 Disk Drive peripheral. It was known as the RandnetDD. Had it succeeded, it would have been a lot like the Wii's avatar creation system with public interaction. It had email, Internet, Postcards, E-Commerce and Magazines. It was also supposed to have music distribution, NES games, the ability to observe other player's sessions, and the ability to download beta test levels for upcoming games. While it was cancelled, some of the DD games, ended up being created as standard N64 releases, like Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, Mission: Impossible, Derby Stallion 64, and would have featured games like Street Fighter III, Diablo, Fire Emblem 64, Mother 3, Super Mario RPG 2. It was wild, but it shit the bed HARD.
It was very ambitious, it was affordable, which would have been interesting, roughly $90 was the supposed MSRP, but it makes me wonder if it wasn't financially viable for the demand they were going to receive.
I'm never as big on overrated lists, even when I agree with some. Something about the negativity that it inherently brings just instantly puts me on the defensive, and I don't like to get overly argumentative in comments. I think part of the trouble with calling older games overrated is the combination of their role in history, the happiness they brought at the time when newer games didn't exist yet, and the fact that every game has some niche fanbase that overrates it. Quest 64, I bought and beat at its launch. I had some small amount of fun, but it was never great or really even good. I think some of the fanbase praises it ironically, just because it is so broken. Mario 64, between its historical significance and its controls, is difficult to overrate. At the time, there was nothing else in its class, and for my tastes, the control still has yet to be improved upon. The camera is lousy for sure, and even the hardcore speedrunning crowd hates Rainbow Ride and the 2 swimming stages, but I'm hard pressed to name another 3D platformer I'd prefer to play. Goldeneye... retroactively, yeah, the framerate is tough and the controls have long since been improved. However, in its time, it was a revelation for home console death matches, and for licensed games in general. Some of those multiplayer stages are still reall dynamite in their design. I don't know that it is overrated really, as most folks really revere it more for the memories than the current way it stacks up. However, I do believe there is still merit in some archaic game designs. Doom is still just fun, even if it has been iterated and improved upon. It still carries an atmosphere and feel all its own that still feels good. I see Goldeneye much the same way. There was a lot of room for improvement given modern hardware, but the stylistic and design choices made within the limitations of the time still lend it a pretty unique flavor that can still be enjoyable, though not as timeless as I'd argue Mario 64 to be. I'm amazed at how much content you manage to get out and still maintain a consistent level of quality. I hope you get enough rest and family time!
I was fully of energy and good vibes until you mentioned Mario 64 as being overrated. In other words, I disagree. 🤷♂️Just for that, I’m calling my good friend Shigeru Miyamoto to inform him of your blasphemous take. You do believe that he is my good friend, right? After all, you did believe your neighbor was moving to the frozen tundra that is Antacrtica. 🤣😝 Try making a video of Nintendo and Sega’s top 10 commercials ever. That would be fun and extremely nostalgic. 👍
Even though Mario 64 is overrated I still like that game a lot. I remember looking at video game magazines reading about it and looking at pictures so hyped as a kid and had fun with it when it came out
I don't disagree with you or you list... ...BUT... I grew up on the NES. Most NES games are hit garbage compared to anything that came later, unless you ignore a lot of problems, like bad graphics, bad translations, bad plots, etc etc. So when I see someone talking about "overrated" I usually take it with a grain of salt. Is Dragon Warrior great because it simplified and streamlined RPGs? Absolutely. Does that sales total and ongoing series and spinoff make it the best game ever made? Absolutely not. But, if taken as a product of its time, and compared to similar things that were new simultaneously, that's kind of how I measure games compared to one another. People say Dragon Warrior is 10/10 and people say it is awful. I can see that both arguments have merit. I like it, but there's absolutely room for improvements, and in the last several decades, they cleaned up most of my issues with the original in subsequent games. But I can't compare the original 1988 game with the newest title, because there's no real comparison. And for all the praise I heap on Dragon Warrior (now Dragon Quest, world-wide) I fully support calling it overrated, because everyone talks about it, and everyone always says the same thing. And the 1 thing I would have changed on your list is swapping out DK64 with Smash Bros. DK64 had a *TON* of hype when the N64 was better than sliced bread, but I honestly didn't think it ever had an actual release. Smash is basically part of common knowledge and if that's not overrated well I don't even know what is.
This list had me scoffing A LOT. We must have different definitions of overrated. It seems like you're forgetting about how games exist within their own times. Mario 64, GoldenEye, Srar Fox 64... they all really pushed their genres forward at the time they existed and were a blast to play when compared to what was out at the time. Sure, they have been surpassed as others have stood on their shoulders. But going back NOW and not enjoying a game as much as you did back then only means the game doesn't hold up as well under more modern standards. Not that it was overrated. This video has a lot of entries that sound like saying the first fans were overrated in light of the existence of AC units. Would i prefer AC now? Hell yeah. But it makes little sense to dismiss what came before it.
I do play these games cognitively with the understanding that the mechanics of the era were groundbreaking, but my personal approach to rating games involves artwork, fun, gameplay, controls, music, and more.
I disagree with Mario 64… I had fun with it to the very end, as a teenager and again years later as an adult. Pretty much everything else I agree with though. Goldeneye was ok at best. My friends would play it endlessly to the point that I would just want to smash the cart. I do respect it as a pioneering game in the genre, but i don’t actually like the FPS much anyway,. So to me it’s just an average game from an awesome movie franchise. Oh yeah… Quest 64 is a complete abomination. The most disappointing thing for me about the N64 was the lack of RPGs. Quest 64 did nothing to fill the void. Idk who in their right mind would rate the game as anything more than garbage not even worth playing. The most entertaining thing you could do with the Quest 64 cartridge is stick a bunch of Firecrackers into it 💥 💥 💥
This goddamn console is overrated! Right down to the cookie cutter development kits. This console was the first to use the concept of a pay wall. Wanna play the Brood War missions in StarCraft 64? Wanna access the other 85% of Perfect Dark? Get an expansion pack, sucker!
I don't even really care about the Expansion Pack to be honest, I don't feel it really did THAT much. I know it was important, but....modern emulation nixes the need for it.
i honestly agree with SM64, having played all the Super Mario games previously, i was a bit underwhelmed with SM64 overall. it was fun, but where were the powerups? 3 for the whole game?? and you had to unlock them? AND find the blocks they were contained in? i still like SM64, but over the years it shows it's age and it aged like milk...
@@MatttheMysterious in SMB3 you could take them with you and in SMW you could hold a powerup in between. it was not always that you had to find blocks to get the powerup. also, you did not have a time limit with said powerups, unlike in SM64 where you did. so i hope that clarified my issues with SM64, note that i dont HATE SM64, i merely address it's flaws that make the game overrated imo, it was still Mario's first successful 3D title. but the games following would come to do it much better.
Aside from Kirby that you specifically said you didn’t like it when you played it back then, you consider those other games overrated in today’s day? Or you considered those games overrated at the time they were released? Back in the day I was so hyped for Mario kart 64 because of super Mario kart on the snes but the first time I played it I was so disappointed ☹️ since day one, that’s the most overrated game from me, aside from that game I find smash brothers overrated, my cousin bought it, everyone loved it , i didn’t ☹️DK64/conker bad fur day after Mario 64 and banjo was more of the same, and Kirby I have never played it but just looking at the magazines I was disappointed of it
I have to disagree with Star Fox, well several but Star Fox the most. SF gets no where near the love it should get, just look at how few games the franchise gets.
I grew up on NES and then SNES but i went with ps1 over n64. So i didnt play many n64 games but looking back over the years im glad I made the choice for playstation. The n64 controller was an abomination and the blocky textures are just terrible. This coming from a lover of nintendo. Granted ps1 had some laughable 3d and textures but many games today are still great whereas I cant even play n64 anymore its so bad.
I played both PS1 and N64 as a kid. The PS1 was mine and my sister had the N64. It was fun playing multiplayer games on the N64 sometimes with her, but overall I preferred my PS1 also.
I was never a fan of N64 due to the boxy polygons of most of the games. While I greatly enjoyed some of the games, the graphics were always subpar to the crisp graphics of the previous SNES. Don't get me started on the awful controller. 🤦
I feel exactly the same way. To me, the GameCube wasn't much better, but at least it had the Game Boy player. Maybe it's adulthood and nostalgia, but other than the Switch, my favorites were always the NES and SNES.
So...originally OoT was on this list, but I sat down and remembered how OoT stacked up against literally any other N64 game, and I couldn't justify it. Lol.
@@Fortefyre Personally I think Mario 64>OOT, but that's just me. I've always found Ocarina to be overrated Imo, their both still great games of course.
@StarlightMirror I agree. I found OoT way more overrated than SM64. Sure. Mario 64 has it's problems. But at the very least it was short and you don't have to do everything to complete the game. OoT is an absolute chore. Hyrule is way too big & empty, there's barely anything happening around it, the progression is very slog and you don't have an item to speed up like the Pegasus Boots or Bunny Ears ( even Epona isn't all that fast ) the dungeons are some of the weakest in the series mainly because they weren't very unique; having complex & challenge and some like the Forest, Shadow & especially the Water Temple are very obnoxious & tedious, the inventory you get in dungeons are very situational and is worthless afterwards, I barely had any interest in the characters, the game can be an pushover and in terms of the structures & layouts, it's an complete ripoff of A Link to the Past and I think that game & Majora's Mask are better than this.
@jaretco6423 Someone else who likes Majora's Mask more than Ocarina of Time? Heck yeah! And I agree with everything you said, OOT is basically just a 3D Link to the Past Imo, and the overworld is just so vast and empty. Link moves so slow in it, it's still a great game(better than Botw and Totk) but it's not the best game ever like a lot make it out to be either.
@StarlightMirror Yeah. But I will say that without OoT being successful, we wouldn't have Majora's Mask. So I can appreciate it and I respect the game for how influential it was. I just don't agree with alot of people saying it's the greatest game ever nor it's not even like my top 5 favorite Zelda games.
I'm not a troll, promise, I keep an open forum for discussion of our emotions in how they relate to video games. It's not a bad thing, it's just an opinion.
@@Fortefyre I say less overrated and more a case of Nintendo's hubris and unwillingness to get away from the cartridge format being the major downfall of the system. As is typical with Nintendo systems, the vast majority of the first party releases were great. The problem comes from the third party developers, or in this particular instance the lack of them. The N64 only had 388 games released for it if we factor in all regions. One only needs to look at the NES (1387) and SNES (1738) to realize just how much of a drop off that is. In terms of volume of releases, Nintendo did not return to seeing over 1K titles on a single home console until the Wii. In a different world where Nintendo adopted disc based tech much sooner? Who knows what happens. In the world we live in however? The result was a system that was expensive at the time when compared to other disc based systems like the original Playstation. Nintendo lost a considerable amount of support, had to spend the entire generation after the N64 playing catch up and earning trust back, and eventually had to settle for being the "second system" people buy behind Sony or Microsoft rather than participate in the continued graphical arms race. And honestly? Considering the current state of certain things, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo might be gearing up to potentially be right back in the mix for the top slot with whatever comes after the Switch, especially as graphics are reaching a point where gains are really starting to become more and more minimal, systems are getting more expensive, and the gameplay is seeming to take a backseat to the graphics and, shall we say, other highly questionable aspects.
Wasn’t HAL also a callback to the computer in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001?
That is potentially also true.
Im almost 100% sure Mario 64 was never a pack-in game

Even against more modern first-person shooters, Goldeneye 007 is my favorite. Something about the aiming controls and the way enemies react to getting hit makes it feel punchier than any other I’ve played. In Halo, for example, it feels more like you’re melting aliens with a heat gun. It’s hard to even tell if your shots are hitting sometimes.
I can see that!
Good points on Goldeneye. Perfect Dark became the game that Goldeneye should've been, but no one talks about. You threw some iffy ones in there that could've indeed caused backlash, but you backed it up. Cheers
Yeah I think Perfect Dark is better, eons better actually.
The HAL / IBM thing originated from ‘2001 A Space Odyssey’ - a movie from the 60s.
This is true, but I was discussing HAL Lab's naming convention, which Satoru Iwata explained in an interview.
Yeah, but to me the multi-player is the only redeeming thing about it lol
@@Fortefyre I thought Super Mario 3 was better than Mario 64. It was just different. But with 007 I agree and to think it was a last minute add on! I won't bring up Odd Job 😉
Quest 64. A game where you play as a kid with Mary Jensen hair.
LMAO
Diddy Kong Racing is a very good kart racer, but man, Naughty Dog built on everything DKR established and improved it in every way with Crash Team Racing only two years later.
I believe that as well. CTR was definitely a fun game.
The whole game's motion seems so far behind what was already on the system lol.
to Fortefyre= I know I'm about to earn the ire of the grand majority of my fellow pro-wrestling videogame enthusiasts; but there's one game I considered overrated on the good old N64 and that's "WWF No Mercy"! besides the flawless control scheme, I just don't see what else is so hot about it! again, just IMO... Good Energy, Good Vibes!
I genuinely couldn't get into any wrestling games prior to the PS2 lmao. Good energy good vibes to you!
Thank you for not choosing Paper Mario. You dumped on everyone else's favourite N64 games, but spared mine. :)

Tbf that game is kinda overrated. It's babies first RPG albeit charming
So was Mystic Quest on the SNES lol.
@@FortefyreYeah, but the SNES had a lot of other options outside Europe, whereas the N64 was mostly just Paper Mario kicking Quest 64 in the butt.

It's charming for what it is. I'll give it that.

Haha, I appreciate your response! I still play drunk Mario Kart 64 with my friends lol.
I’m impressed you got Donkey Kong 64 at Christmas 1998 before it came out 😂
LMFAO, you know I looked that up after the video, because it's where I got my expansion pack lol. I was like..."oh god the comment section is going to go wild".
@@Fortefyre honest mistake - an excellent video all around, though.
Best part about goldeneye is the music.
Mario 64 also has good music.
A lot of these games have great opening levels for a few hours but as they try to add difficulty it comes at the expense of fun.
I totally agree. That's the trend for the whole system.
Kirby 64 is....ugh lol
I really never got into Pokemon
I tried to, like barely.
I remember wanting to love Quest 64 so bad because I had gotten an N64 despite loving RPGs and it was like the one great hope outside if Ocarina of Time. And well.
The N64 was 100% RPG starved lol
Star Fox 64 and Donkey Kong 64 actually are Underated, they're amazing!
Mehhhhh lol
Nice video, thanks for making it.
Thank you!
If you think OoT is too big, wait until you see the huge empty expanses that await you in later entries on more powerful hardware...
I honestly can’t stand Ocarina of Time. Everything about it is just… boring
Ummm.....April fools?
Nope lol.
Great video you bourbon scented beast! I have to admit never owning an N64, only renting it two times to play conker. Never really clicked with it and skipped the whole system entirely. So, yes, I never did and never will play Golden Eye. *pitchforks down please* 😂
YES JOIN THE GOLDENEYE HATE CULT
Played the first game and the NES game, never found them fun 🤷♂
DK64?
The FPS likely would have been dominated by more Doom clones for longer than we could have imagined as it seems like game developers tend to operate in cycles of "follow the leader" and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Hell, I'd go so far to say that without Goldeneye, the genre as a whole would have been set back to a point where even games that aren't considered to be FPS titles but merely use the camera angle could have been affected. I honestly cannot see a game like Mirror's Edge existing in a world where Goldeneye didn't come along and experiment with the genre.
This is a wonderful breakdown, and I enjoyed your insight tremendously!

I wish more people were like you lol. I'm sure in a few days, I'll have someone completely UNLIKE you responding to this video lol.
"like vaguely remembered dreams" is a very true sentiment!
Sadly you are correct. Good for the time but age poorly
It's a shame that it is that way, but that's how it is.
That HAL labs thing I was not aware of. It makes total sense when you explain it. Also, my Dad worked for IBM when i was a kid. Well actually, he first worked for a company called CPT, then went to IBM at some point. I'm not sure if CPT went under or got bought out or what.
Also for the computer in 2001:A Space Odyssey movie.

quest-64?? how can it even theoretically be overrated?
Beats me, there's communities that seek to preserve it, I want it to sink into the ocean lol.
I don't gauge games by modern standards. I gauge them by playing them on face value. I've given Zork 2 tremendous marks, and it's just words lol.
OH MY GOD, these things so needed to be said.
I'm glad I could say it loud and proud :)
Oh lord are you tripping. I saw Dk racing, and then you went even farther after that. You better be able to find better games for the same console that are similar. These games invented the formula that was built upon to create what we have now. But tbh, some of these games arent particularly loved by the community anyways
Probably lmfao.
I need to step up my Kirby game lol, that's a BIG ole franchise lol. Perfect Dark is definitely what I expected Goldeneye to be.
Haven't watched yet but if I made a list like this Goldeneye would be number 1

I don't want to remember my teen years lmfaooo
Diablo 64 would have eather been amazing or horrible. I don't see a possible in-between but someone needs to make it soon so I can try
@@Fortefyre that's a lot of promised features, tbh might have been too many, which is why it ultimately got cancelled.
It was very ambitious, it was affordable, which would have been interesting, roughly $90 was the supposed MSRP, but it makes me wonder if it wasn't financially viable for the demand they were going to receive.
So for Goldeneye, I have this to say:
th-cam.com/video/UWDWijLL-xE/w-d-xo.html
Dead serious lmfao :P
I appreciate that. It's a lot of effort, a lot of scripting, editing, etc. Maybe one day I'll do a "in the life of me" video.
Killed me smalls first game is pokemon and I'm dying already. That was the game that saw how good you were... Am literally dying bro😂
LMAO I"M SORRY
I was fully of energy and good vibes until you mentioned Mario 64 as being overrated. In other words, I disagree. 🤷♂️Just for that, I’m calling my good friend Shigeru Miyamoto to inform him of your blasphemous take. You do believe that he is my good friend, right? After all, you did believe your neighbor was moving to the frozen tundra that is Antacrtica. 🤣😝
Try making a video of Nintendo and Sega’s top 10 commercials ever. That would be fun and extremely nostalgic. 👍
It's on the books already :)
This is a great take Bill, thank's for taking the time to write it.
Quest 64 was universally panned. It got horrible reviews, how in the world is it overrated?
Because he found a small group of people who enjoy it on twitter obviously lol
Haha no, there's like entire ass communities that focus on preserving JUST quest 64.
@@FortefyreIt belongs in a museum!
The most entertaining thing you could do with the Quest 64 cartridge is stick a bunch of Firecrackers into it 💥 💥 💥
Yeah many folks mention how RPG starved the N64 was, and it was, there really wasn't any potential there to exploit lol.
Hornets nest you did kick🤣🤣 you know what you was doing while making this video 🤣🤣 atleast you didn't throw no mercy in this list
I never do haha
Yepppppp 3 hats.
Yup there are several better 3D Mario games now anyway. Super Mario Odyssey and the 2 Galaxy games on Wii are the best imo.
Aside from Kirby that you specifically said you didn’t like it when you played it back then, you consider those other games overrated in today’s day? Or you considered those games overrated at the time they were released? Back in the day I was so hyped for Mario kart 64 because of super Mario kart on the snes but the first time I played it I was so disappointed ☹️ since day one, that’s the most overrated game from me, aside from that game I find smash brothers overrated, my cousin bought it, everyone loved it , i didn’t ☹️DK64/conker bad fur day after Mario 64 and banjo was more of the same, and Kirby I have never played it but just looking at the magazines I was disappointed of it
Smash ALMOST made this list. It was definitely almost 10.
I have to disagree with Star Fox, well several but Star Fox the most. SF gets no where near the love it should get, just look at how few games the franchise gets.
And I appreciate your opinion!
When I jump to the N64 controller after playing tons of other games, it always throws me off lmao.
You don't like holding the 3rd leg of the controller? :P
I feel exactly the same way. To me, the GameCube wasn't much better, but at least it had the Game Boy player. Maybe it's adulthood and nostalgia, but other than the Switch, my favorites were always the NES and SNES.
Might as well have thrown in Zelda, resident evil 2, Tony hawk, etc too lol.
:P
The Zeldas are great and the other 2 have beefed-up versions on other systems.
Surprised I didn't see smash here, good content yet again 😊
Smash ALMOST made it.
I see your Mario 64, and I raise you Ocarina of Time. Imo OOT is Overrated. XD
I agree with argubly half of this list but now I wonder is there a top 10 best N64 games?
I don't tend to do top games of ALL time on a system. That requires me to play them all.
there are only 10-15 good games on the 64 period
I tend to believe it, and the bad thing is, it was almost always Nintendo released games lol.
Yeah this video is a troll lol. Downvoted.
No, he's like this all the time.
I'm not a troll, promise, I keep an open forum for discussion of our emotions in how they relate to video games. It's not a bad thing, it's just an opinion.
Ok here it comes...I thought Zelda:Majora's Mask was the most boring Zelda game ever. (Begin the hate....)
Omg so did I! To this day it's the only console zelda game I've never beaten. I hated it.
Majora's Mask...as a kid I hated it, as an adult, I was able to recognize the dark themes and align myself with the message it was trying to promote.
Travis, give it a shake sometime!
Agreed. I LOVED Ocarina of Time and was stoked for Majoras Mask. Once I got it, I absolutely hated it.
DOOM on floppy discs. > 007
FACTS
Omg gamefaqs!!? Lol
INFANCY JEFF. IT WAS IN ITS INFANCY
I hate every Mario Kart game. This was a good list.
Thank you:)
Goldeneye 007 is awesome, but it is overrated.
I feel the same way.
And i thought i was the only one who hated Star Fox.
I can't stand it, like at all.
In other words, N64 is overrated
That's my prognosis.
I concur with your prognosis
And I couldn't agree more haha
The N64 PS1 era has not aged well
The N64 as a whole was overrated
I tend to agree with you, and it took me really busting through those retro goggles.
@@Fortefyre not that it’s bad. It just really wasn’t what Nintendo had been promising.
