Yes, Star Wars was influenced by Dune, and both Star Wars and Dune were influenced by Edgar Rice Burrough's "Princes of Mars" book written in 1912, the first of his Barsoom series. Bits and pieces, it's fun to see how other writers interpret the material.

    • @LightLeo111
      @LightLeo111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

eh, People say that but its not that true. Apocalypse Now (Vietnam War) and Flash Gordon are really what inspired Star Wars the most. George Lucas was actually supposed to direct Apocalypse Now and it was going to be quite a different movie than what we got. Star Wars and the 'Rebellion versus the Empire' is inspired by the Vietnamese versus the United States during the war. So take that idea and put a spacy Flash Gordon theme over it and you get Star Wars. George Lucas and Francis Coppola are friends and used to shoot the sh*t with each other a lot back in the day. Not a lot of people seem to know that. They basically dreamt up Apocalypse Now together, but Coppola was more driven to work on and finish the movie and George lost control over it which lead him to use some of his ideas from that and put it into Star Wars.
I would say some of the deeper philosophical aspects in Star Wars might be inspired by Dune though. Like the "Zen" aspect of the Force and whatnot and the whole Messiah/prophecy thing.

I have to ask this. How does it compare to David Lynch's "Dune"? I've seen the Sci-fi channel's, (disappointing) and I love Lynch's version. Unless the 2000 release was the Sci-fi channel's version, I missed that one.
It's dammned difficult, turning a 1,000 plus page book into a movie of 90 minutes. Dune is really tough; lots of politics, ,many different locations, and the cast of characters that impact Paul, and the workings of the Bene Gesserit and Mentats is enough to make you crazy as a director.✌😸

Still cant figure out if the new version is better than Lynch's in general or some shiny shit, so did kind of a technical analysis of the major parts splitting 10 points between each...
(+ means there's something about it where it should be bumped up, and - something overrated or especially bad and should bump down, so +=cool, -=sucks)
ex1.: paul, ya timi is better and closer to the book, pretty good actor i guess, especially younger, kyle wasn't great but not bad either, but none of them really measure to what paul should be.
ex2.: hornithopter, clearly '21 wins, not even a contest, but they are especially great while '84 was especially a "phonebooth", maybe a cool "phonebooth" but still a "phonebooth".
ex1.: thumper, theres zero arguing for '21 ('84 was solid AF and iconic) and it even looks, feels and sounds like an airbed pump, so -.

Frank Herbert's "Dune Encyclopedia" answers most of the unanswered questions from the books and movies. It is a must read for any Dune fan, if you can find a copy. It goes into the science, the background of all the major groups and characters, the background of the Empire, why computers were forbidden, and even taboo topics about Baron H's sex life. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down until I finished it - it is as long as the three first books combined and an actual encyclopedia - not a story at all.

This film sports a distinctly Arabic theme, in keeping with author Frank Herbert having used Islamic culture as an influence for his story.
Composer Hans Zimmer is a big fan of the novel Dune, and turned down working with frequent collaborator Christopher Nolan on Tenet (2020) to score this film. For the same reason, Denis Villeneuve was the top choice but turned down the offer to direct the Bond film No Time to Die (2021).
In Dune (1984), all the Harkonnen were depicted as red-haired. In this movie they are all depicted as bald.
Rebecca Ferguson plays the mother of Timothée Chalamet despite being only 12 years older than him.
Actor Timothée Chalamet was 23 when he played Paul Atreides, two years younger than Kyle MacLachlan when he played the same role in Dune (1984). In the novel, Paul was 15 years old.
Denis Villeneuve has revisited Dune (1984) and continued Blade Runner (1982). Sean Young played the main character's love interest in both films back in the 80s.
The film's clothing is based on Dune (1984): the Harkonnen soldiers wear bulky green armor, the Atreides workers wear black uniforms with high collars and kepi caps, and the Sardaukar wear full pressure suits (while in the book they wore regular military uniforms and helmets).
David Dastmalchian's third movie with director Denis Villeneuve, following Prisoners (2013) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017).
The cast features one Oscar winner (Javier Bardem) and three Oscar nominees (Josh Brolin, Timothée Chalamet, and Charlotte Rampling).

“Dune” depicts the whole civilization, science, economy & society, politics, material & human resources, environments⭐.
Thus, it makes us think about all kinds of sustainability, environmental, economic, social (or human), and political🌎.
The ingenious SF setting revives old-style weapons or schemes and improves human abilities, creating excellent edutainment.
This American masterpiece seems to tell us the importance of human improvement, not of some people but all people♥.

All 3 adaptations are very worthy. Lynch's version gave me a taste of Dune and prompted me to re-read the book that I abandoned in high school for "Lord of the Rings." I still go back and watch his version as a capable encapsulation of the novel. The Sci-Fi channel's mini-series is well worth watching. The production values are low but the acting and the storylines closely follow Frank Herbert's books. Definitely watchable and enthralling. Villeneuve's adaptation is the be-all-and-end-all theatrical release. He has nailed it, hook line and sinker. I hope that he will develop a trilogy that will encompass "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune." Herbert's 6 novels are not to be missed!

I actually like that about dune that the tech part isnt explained so much its makes it more realistic if you compare it to a movie or series that takes place in our time they dont ad all tech details about how a car works or a plane or a cellphone either. I mean paul knows about space ships, trafel in one. I know about trains and travel in them yet i have no idea what a train engine does other then make the train go. On shows like star trek you understand its needed to ad it as the crew knows about the tech stuff and you as viewer get to see it to in for example scenes where you see geordie and date do tech things but for the story of dune its not needed as you never see paul work on a space ship or build tech things

I think there will be a major arch with the Paul and the character Jamis that isn't in the books. One of the things I don't think a lot of people got out of the movie is the ending fight between Paul and Jamis, as well as all of the "flash back/forward" scenes of Jamis talking to Paul. By the end of the film, Paul is already experiencing being able to see through spacetime and had built some kind of relationship with Jamis. So when Paul kills him at the end, he's basically killing his teacher/friend, which is why Paul mourns Jamis so much.
Jamis is probably who taught Paul how to put on his stillsuit correctly.
I think in the next film, we will see more of Jamis.

If anything, it would feel like a visually updated, modernized filming director's cut at worst. Still, I feel more optimistic with being able to follow along, appreciative of the different takes and additions and hopeful to see a fleshing out of characters who barely had any screen time in Lynch's version, like Duncan Idaho and Liet Kynes. Uhm actually, Dune is not as much about Paul Atreides as it is about the House and their dealings in the universe over several generations itself. Arguably, most of the story is about Paul's son Leto II, who transforms into a sandworm-human hybrid and rules with absolute authority (as the only source of spice) for 3.5 thousand years; and about the Bene Gesserit, an order of sighted women, who maintain more power and the longest consistent influence in galactic politics than anyone else. It is a six book series after all, and not just a single novel. ;)

I thought it was fantastic. (warts and all)
All Dune fans recognize how complex the material is and how difficult it would be to bring to the big screen. Some of us were just a little bit more tolerant of the creative license taken to get the story across, In 2 plus hours.

      [TECHNICAL ANALYSIS]

      CONCLUSION 242(12+/2-) 258(8+/3-)
      (kind of)
Conclusion: ok, overall on paper maybe '21 is better, more faithful to Dune too, but '84 has more "cool touch" and with all that and all that time i was expecting more than pretty much equals and on my side at least on the hypothetical situation where ... then Lynch wins.

@@MuktiLuv Wow that's quite the analysis. I saw the new version just yesterday and liked it a lot. I've read the books and own both the mini series and the original Lynch version on DVD.
At the end of the day I think everyone is in agreement that bringing the story to cinema is a massive undertaking.
Not only because of the awkward way the source material is written, but because of the diversity of issues the reader may resonate to.
The purists desire this story be told exactly the way it's told in the books.
That will never happen no matter how many attempts are made.
After two (now three) iterations it's pretty clear that covering everything is impossible. Whether you prefer the condensed/camp version Lynch told, the expanded more detail oriented version the sci-fi channel told, or the visual spectacle this new one tells...we are all fans of Dune.
I'm just glad this version is good enough to drive new fans back to the source so they can experience this sci-fi expose' on their own and decide which parts are most important to them.
Thanks for sharing your point of view.

@@Unconsciouzone well, i would see it that way...
...we are now in the situation where we took 3 pictures of a sunset (Dune)...
-one taken by a top modern photographer on a top of the line Nikon which was set at 1.2megapixels. (21)
-another taken by a pretty good photographer at 5Megapix, but with a fisher-price camera. (2000)
-and the last one taken by an iconic photographer on acid with an underwater camera at 3Mpx. (84)
and we are arguing which one is the best...
...ultimately the answer is that they are all shit.
cool to look at ok, but still sucks compare to the source.
if that makes sense to you.
      ---
cost of these 3 shots considering inflation... i mean gotta compared oranges with oranges, you could buy a house for 500$ in 1950.

all i'll say for sure is that Villeneuve'21 version is the one that frustrate me the most.
It was supposed to be a great DUNE finally.
Thats shiny but NOT Dune... wayyy too much is missing.
im not a purist and realize that it is pretty hard to bring to screen if there's the desire that the story be told exactly the way it's told in the books and thats most likely not even desirable, that would be too long and boring.
Although i would like a version taken at 8mp+ with a great camera by someone logical who knows wtf he's doing and what he's talking about.
we dont need the sunset, only a great picture of it properly done,... now all we got is pixelated AF shit with weird effects layered.

@@MuktiLuv So you are approaching it from the point of view of a filmmaker. Cool.
I'm a musician, and had problems with the Hans Zimmer score of this new one compared to Eno/Toto effort in Lynch's version, so we are on the same page there kinda...
The magic of this particular story (regardless of who's telling it) for me personally, is that it's about our possible future and the consequences of our decisions. A very hard thing to convey on screen given the multitude of high bars a big screen movie has to hurdle
David Lynch's version kinda missed the mark on that front, through no fault of his own because apparently Hollywood forced him to follow the hero's journey trope. but he managed to leave an emotional impression on literally millions of people nonetheless.
It hit a spiritual chord with a lot of people despite it's limitations and flaws
I'm more than willing to give this iteration the same chance, for the same reasons.
      I'm impressed so far.

@@Unconsciouzone nha, know fuk-all about film making i'm a sound engineer and musician too...
toto's score was amazing and crazy catchy, and it's part of dune now want it or not, hans should really have expanded on it instead of blasting pacific rims horns every 5 minutes.
Ya, feels there'll be even less meaning in that one... but shooting the data right would have been a start.
im really not impressed so far... disappointed AF.

Failed to mention Dali in the Jodorowsky's version. I can't blame the narratress but what team writes these scripts?

Other fact spice is in the dune universe what oil is in our current days. Dune no travel possible without spice, he would control spice controls the universe. No travel possible without oil. he would hold oil holds the power. Herbert was a genius
