Let's Play Breath of Fire 3 - Bonus #08 - Lavaman Leveling

- The lava man trick is used to gain levels quickly. It's pretty handy, and you can gain up to 65,000 experience off of just one lava man! With a bit of preparation, you too can gain some quick levels through this trick. Some things you'll need to successfully utilize this trick:
- Armor protecting against fire (ring of fire, magma armor, asbestos armor)
- Ammonia's (preferably about 30)
- Molotov's (as many as you can buy...purchase at the Mcneil Village)
- Icicle (about 10...it takes 2 to kill a lava man...purchase at Junk Town)
Using the molotov's to "level up" the lava man, be cautious when a character has been taken out. Switch to what I call "ammonia mode" where you focus your turns on using ammonia's on the downed opponent. Afterwards, continue Molotov'ing!
When you're ready, take them out by using some icicles and reap the rewards!

"Lava Man is often regarded as one of the best enemies in the game for grinding, as you can increase its EXP by the use of Fire elemental attacks. However, this also increases its other stats, so a low-level party might not survive long enough to defeat it unless the usage of Soul Gems is abused. The maximum EXP you can get from a Lava Man using this method is 65,535, which results from 15 uses of fire attacks."

im gonna try this in the next few days, i just got done training boyd and about to enter the light house so i think im kinda close to getting into the mountain (havent played this game in like 10 years). i been grinding but its starting to get tedious. im gonna save all my money too so i can load up on all the stuff you mentioned.
Same here I haven't played this game since I was 15 and I'm 36 now this game always been one of my favorite all-time RPG's
best optoinal equipment is IVORY CHARM,and for shield is the PROTECTORS.

Ammonia's won't be so effective when you're dealing with 2 of them though. You won't be able to revive fast enough, and you risk a game over. The way you handle 2 of them is with Soul Gem abuse. Just equip them at the start, then when someone dies, they'll revive automatically. Then you just reequip another soul gem, ad infinum until you batter them with icicles. BAM! 131070 EXP :)
I got lucky and found like 3 or 4 Ivory Dice and used them on the platform guy and gained a ton of levels that way.
just figured i would report back encase anyone is going to try this. i went from about level 24 to 41 in a few hours of doing it. problem is i dont really have any anti- fire stuff due to it being so early in the game, so i gave nina the ring of fire, and ryu the asbestos armor, then i just go get garr and ryu inoculated (sp) with flameblock which gives them 100% amunity. which i have to do everytime i rest . sucks the ivory dice doesnt do squat in this situation though because the exp is already maxed
think i might try to get them up to level 50 then give up, only got 30 ammonia's left and about 5k in the bank so might not have a choice soon

@dragonstylerz Ohhh, I see what you're saying! You're just wondering if the experience crosses over into the other levels...basically, just because you hit level 16, does the rest of the experience go to level 17. To answer your question, yes it does. You can see my Peco gains 10 levels in the fight even though the experience counter reached "0." Hope this helps a bit.
No ivory dice? You can copy it with fairies and it doubles the EXP you get everytime you use it. It stops stacking after a few uses though. And of course for Lavamen you don't need ivory dices which are quite rare if you don't copy.
@Pohkaymahn Hey, hey!!! This man knows his breath of fire 3! All indeed correct sir. Was unsure of the whole (15 or 14 levels so I rounded to 20 in the video commentary). I definitely feel you on the magma armor thing, I didn't grab grab any more because, even if the fire attacks are healed, one physical attack was gonna take me out anyways :(
Is there any way to force a Vulcan to drop a magma armour? I've been fighting them for about 8 hours and have yet to receive a single one.
@@DrunkJapanese You can use CHARM (a skill learned from Merryleep) to double your chances of obtaining the magma armor. SOMETIMES, with these old games, you'll get a bad "seed" of RNG, and it'll take forever. Just go and rest up, and literally reset the game to help this out.

@dragonstylerz I'm kind of unsure of what you're talking about, but I'm assuming you mean when you hit level 99? I think that's when it says something like "reached max level" and you can no longer level up after this point.

22,2k exp for the group is the maximum
I seem to remember turning into a flame behemoth being the best way to do this
More cost effective for sure, but probably takes a lot longer since you can only do 1 attack per round.
Awesome I didn't know that trick. I knew there was an enemy in bof 4 to do a 1000 hit combo but I was missing a skill...
Use together with soul gem and ring of fire
I'm pretty sure you can use Firecrackers if you want to do two at once.
I'm supposing 20x fire attacks and then you won't need Ivory Dice?
Luckily I can use save-states and abused the Casino to get a million zenny so I can juts buy Soul Gems and 99 of all the consumables, no problemo.

@@timmeier4136 yay that's great to hear. How do you like it now after so long? Do you think it aged well? My girlfriend now (my ex is the one mentioned previously) will play through bof 3 eventually as we go down our list of rpgs. I'm not sure if she will be into it but I'm looking forward to replaying it again.
Side note; I still think this video is great! Even when I was in my teens trying to grind, my highest level character was around 49 and I could not beat the final boss. I hope to change that next playthrough (and with this leveling method heheh).
@@Krobelux hey i think it aged well ‚cause of the 2d comic style, but the game is really long and repetitive, but i still like it ‚cause of all the memories.
now it is really easy for me, just got garr and didn‘t died once, cause i remember all the masters, elements e.g.
as a kid i didn‘t know that it makes a difference which formation you choose or that it is important to upgrade your gear too and focus on 2 chars instead of trying to level up all of them :D. this time i try to play with pecco, never
leveled him up before.
@@timmeier4136 I agree I think thanks to the sprites it probably still holds up in the visual department. I remember the music being wonderful, and the cedar woods(?) was an homage to Chrono Trigger's forest music. Both very nice to listen to. The game is really long! At least when I was young it felt like it took me months to make noticeable progress. Particularly the desert crossing I could not figure out for the life of me, even with a guide.
What was your team setup when you finally faced the last boss? I always ended up using Peco to quickly learn master stuff. Otherwise I hope it holds up for you.
@@Krobelux yeah the music is really iconic and i remember all soundtracks :). maling progress back than really was a pain dying so often and spending time with the mini games as fishing and the fairy town :). i did not manage to cross the desert for hours because far as i remember the german translation had a mistake.
i found a very easy solution that is just turning one step to the right for all nights ( between real and dake polar star). i fought myra with ryu, nina and rei or ryu, momo and garr. but i remember that i chose the „wrong“ masters.

no i meant for ex. ur level 15 and ur reaching 16 and it says 3 exp left for lvl 16 it goes like 3,2,1 ur level 16 but even if u get 1000 exp it says 3,2,1,0 and it stays zero it doesnt begin from lvl sixten

I would say that's the optimal way, but you can definitely power level through levling up the Lavamen or Magmamites a COUPLE of times...just make sure you can kill them, and SAVE BEFORE!
@@JRPG-Mickey i was missing some items and got 1 shot by the fire...but manage to complete the volcano and got myself a magma armor...now illl be able to go back in there...ty for the guide
@@freaklatino13 Yeah, focus first on the Magmaites. They'll give crazy good experience at that point in the game, and good money from magma armors when you collect a few.

ah yes, lavaman leveling works like a boss when trying to learn from tough masters. And Rei with meryleep for the agility boost. People asking to take on 2 lavaman. its pointless becuz the most exp you can get from a battle is 65K.
Kinda late but that’s capped exp of one *monster. 2 Lava Man yield 131070 exp at max.
(For those who’re still unsure).
Cosmic Marionetion 1993 15 Molotovs for each. If you can afford Firecrackers, that’s the fastest way. Fire spell/Fire physical attacks... work too. Be careful if you’re not using an emulator as they can oneshot you after 5-6 empowerings.
Edit: Or u can just do 14 (it’s very close to the max exp).
Definitely wouldn't recommend doing this UNLESS you have set your apprenticeships correctly beforehand. As gaining a ton of levels very quickly can hideously unbalance your stats if your characters are studying under the wrong battle master. Its best to do this with 10 levels, switch to a different master after learning their skills, and repeat, so that your stats remained balanced. Level 99 is cool but you won't get the most powerful party members without making sure your stats remained balanced. Bear in mind as you reach level 99, you can no longer learn anything from the masters as well, as their ability teachings are based on the difference in your level from the last time you spoke to them. I used a cheat to verify that at your maximum level, the display at the end of battle shows "0 EXP to next level", and that character cannot progress any further after they hit 99. This means you'll definitely have to manage masters while Lavaman leveling. Especially if you go in to do it early, the rest of the game is broken with an unbalanced Agility stat, for example. 10 levels at a time while switching masters is the key to getting max stats on all characters.
If you manage to max stats (legitimately, savestating is cheap), Myria dies in 1 ex turn before she can get an attack, and its pretty funny. Ultima 9999 hype :^)

Potentially. I just find that it's faster to take care of the Lavaman faster by casting multiple molotov's and Ammonia's when needed. Using blind may take a turn or 2 if it doesn't stick. Try it out if you;d like!
