Great information. I'm still trying to get my heel, toe down fully. This always comes in handy. Make sure you get on the list everyone. Gabe is an amazing teacher. You can not go wrong. This is my second year in, and I love it. Can not wait to see you play in KC. Hope I can get front row.

Great video! The up close camera angle of the movement really helps.

I just got my first drum kit, V drums. and I've been watching your "training" videos I transcribe your drum notes and take them to practice with. Last night I was using your "3 best beginner exercises" video. Last night I felt like I was smashing or mashing the kick pedal and thought I'd watch a kick pedal technique today, and boom you were the first to pop up. But yes, someone is using your techniques, please know that. Peace...

Not to correct the goat, but you did explain ankle technique a little wrong. Check out Marthyn for some insane double bass explanations, but to do the ankle technique away from the kit correctly, you do NOT lift your heel up then tap your toe. This activates the shin muscle in the front of your leg. And its why doing this away from the kit for an extended period if time will start feel like burning on your shin. The movement is qctually like lifting the heel up, then placing it back down. The beat on your kick drum will come from your heel going up instead of when it hits the ground. This action contracts you calf muscle instead of your shin muscle, and the quick contraction then release is what forms the basis of the technique. Only practice ankle technique away from the kit WITHOUT a reference to a beat, it can confuse you when you get to the kit and the beat happens at a different part of the movement than when it did away from the kit. This part of the explanation is what helped me actually learn the ankle technique, for a while I was stuck only stomping or moving my ankle from the shin contraction.

Thomas Lang, James Payne, JoJo Mayer, the list of drummers who would disagree with your advice (who give tutorials online for free, or in-person lessons, or clinics) continue. I've taken lessons from james payne in person, and also taken the drum technique academy; Marthyn's techniques are based on tension and targeting a triggered pad, while often not even caring about the metronome. HIs training video for the 170bpm workout has errors in it which is weird that he wouldn't re-record something that takes 3 minutes. It's odd. There's errors in this training video iteslf (I could timestamp them if you want) - but Marthyn's techniques aren't better than the control or logic presented in this one.

I agree with @midinerd … I bought both the bass drum mastery from Marthyn and double bass course from James Payne 2 years later… I must admit that the Marthyns way did not work for me at all and I just kept being frustrated… But the James way you gain the control over at lower tempos which makes you more confident when going faster, etc… So in conclusion, you must train both shin and calf to have full control over your ankles…

@emilmijatov6769 I will check that James guy, since I've been practicing Marthyn's method for almost 6 months and can't even play 130bps

    • @saulvera5469
      @saulvera5469 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I started practicing the Marthyn's method wrong, by pushing or stomping the heel to the plate basically and creating the sound that way because I practiced it bad away from the drum , and like you said, yo get used to making a "bass drum sound" when your ankle hit the floor. I watch Marthyn's explaining what you did like 3 months of practice, now I can't get rid of that motion😢

Glad it’s not just me that finds slower tempos much more fatiguing. If I get warmed up and go for say 190bpm I find it comfortable and can do it for ages. If I drop to say 150-160 it’s so brutally hard!

I like it, I started doing something similar with my electric kit at home, since it had a single kick pedal and my acoustic kit thats in the bands space has my double pedal (joys of living in an apartment) good stuff Gabe, tell the guys in Iprevail to book a show near Dayton Ohio so I can finally see you live lol

Late comment, but thank you so much for the explanation!
I'm currently having a very hard time learning Mary on a Cross due to the triple consecutive pedal hits and couldn't understand what I was doing wrong and this video showed me on what I should be focusing on.
I thought my right foot was a lost cause, but now I know it is a common issue and if I keep practicing progress can be made!

@@DrumBeatsOnline No problem friend. I joined you last year, but haven't been able to get too far since my wife got deathly ill right after. So I'm still at level 1. But love your lessons. I wanted to tell you HOW IMPRESSED I WAS TO see you take up RDavidR, on his request to record a song for him. Even though you're so swamped you still took that little job on. That's why I joined you. See, you never know what a small job can lead to. Bless you friend.

Bro has seen James Payne videos...
Seriously the main missing element is the startg motion, since ankle muscles are weaker, the goal is not to be pushing the pedalboard with full power each time, but just giving a little energy boost at each movement
What you actually want to do is a full leg motion for the first stroke and then using the ankle to keep the movement going
doing the movement off the pedal, and without spring help to dévelop the motion
And it's totally possible to use ankle technique for double kick

  • @rinoytony2008

Great video but you did NOT “create” the kick exercise you demonstrated. That exercise, among others, is many decades old. How bold of you to state that.
