***** One good thing to do is close your open programs when you're done with them, especially when you're going to be leaving it idle for a period of time (ex. nighttime). Also, try to keep features you are not using like GPS and WiFi turned off, that keeps them from doing processes in the background and eating battery life. This goes for any cellular device.
liked the video very much but I have a question that you mentioned earlier shorter the camera shittier the image so how do slim phones like iPhone 7s or Gionee have nice camera could you please answer
If I replace the motherboard, does the motherboard need to be the same storage as the previous motherboard? For example: I want to replace a 32 gb motherboard with a 16gb motherboard. Will it work?
Tear downs are great, pity you didn't team up with the you tube channel "eevblog", but the guy from that is based in Australia so impractical I guess, he does the best tear downs.
Just FIY, even though the clock speed of the cpu might be the same as some laptops, the ARM instruction set is more limited than the x64 one which makes it less powerful.
Hey Author, i need to ur expert advice...i replaced my nexus 5's back cover. since the new one did not have the vibrators battery i had to take it from the old one and connect it to the new one...on removing i noticed that it was stuck to the cover by a glue Question: what glue to use to hold the battery to the cover?
iPhones are generally quite modular I have discovered, the price being high may be because of build quality, iPhone parts are all able to be replaced with a bit of patience, and not too much glue. Compared to iPods which are just glued and soldered to cut costs. This phone is pretty impressive as to how it's assembled though!
17:48 It's been five years and I'm only now replacing my Nexus 5, so this statement is spot on! (I'm only replacing it because it keeps refusing to connect to Wifi or mobile networks - reflowed it last month but it started happening again, time to move on)
I am beginning to see/heard they have adhesive within this phone.I think that's what makes it heated from your sweat, correct? How does this freeze and be paused?
I meant to say that today's batteries are so much more powerful than just a few years ago, and you can see that by simply using your smartphone and seeing what power is needed to sustain all the apps running, wi-fi, gps, etc. You probably meant to say how batteries haven't kept pace with other technological advances implemented in phones. But that will change pretty soon.
The Nexus 5 currently has a critical issue: recording videos in a quiet environment will produce a loud static noise in the audio. Evidence suggests every single phone has this issue, but not everyone has noticed yet. However find any videos on TH-cam from the Nexus 5 in a quiet room and the static is the only thing you can hear. People have already experimented enough to say that the echo cancelation software/drivers that they're using is the issue. Google has acknowledged this issue, yet continue to sell the phone to people without telling anyone. 4.4.2 did not address this issue and there is currently no ETA for a fix.
Thinking of changing to a Nexus 5 from a s4. getting tired of Samsungs phone and wanna get a realy high end phone to a resonable price and i dont want a used phone so nexus 5 seems like the best option!
you can also look to the chinese market for this kind of phones. some brands like xiaomi zte and oneplus are doin a great work on making solid quality phones and keeping the price low
Hi,There is cell problem in my google Nexus 5, When I insert gsm number, the phone see network name example Azercell,Bakcell. Before insert number there is this "/"on the cell , but after insering number there is not "/" on the cell. But there is not signal, I can not call anybody. cell is zero. What part I need?
KeenWolfPaw I'm looking at a new unlocked LG G2 for $475.00 on Ebay. New Nexus 5 is 399.99 for what I would want, the 32 gig. So the gap is definitely closing...haven't made my choice which to buy yet, getting one of these phones next month though no matter what.
Google wanted to make a high end phone without going over 500 bucks. For the hardware your getting its a reasonable price. Of course some shortages are goona be made but its still up there
The Nexus 5 is definitely the best phone for its price on the market, I have it and its amazing. The only thing lacking is the camera quality but that's to be expected for price.
Bro, my name is shravan. my phone is oneplus x, two days back a small incident happen. my phone was in my pocket, when i was riding rain started suddenly and i was in rain for 30 mins. After reaching home...i don't know what happened to my phone it was switched off and i felt water inside my phone when i tried to turn it on, its not happening .....after two days i removed my phone from rice bag...i tried to turn it on buts its not showing anything in my display...when i connected my charger, in display its not showing anything but i was red light in notification.... So, bro please tell....if water entered into the phone...will phone turn off automatically or not......if you say it will turn off automatically please tell me the reason...and tell me why phone showing red light when i connected charger
Is that an actual photo from the ISS or an artists impression ? The Earth looks a lot smaler and greener than in other pics I have seen, great pic though !
Zamblot pretty much impossible to replace. it's a System on Chip, not just Chip. The whole motherboard is made to be replaced together, taking the chip of it is pretty much impossible. And the motherboard is only made in this form for nexus 5.
faulty motherboard gave me just 4 months off of warranty, and a lot of troubles with the nexus 5 are caused by the funky main board that lg dishes out. check out the nexus support forum. its filled with complaints that all have the main board at fault, even the seemingly software issue ones. if you are lucky it would break within the warranty period, otherwise you will probably get screwed, like i did.
Great video...repair those electronics instead of replacing them! "What's Inside the Google Nexus 5 Smartphone" They are joined by special guest iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, who has taken apart Google's Nexus 5 smartphone for a thorough teardown analysis. They examine each of the phone's components, see how they're assembled, and discuss just how easy it would be to repair the Nexus 5 if any of its parts breaks down. Great web site & find more of iFixit's great teardown guides at www.ifixit.com
The reason why the Nexus 4 and 5 display assemblies are so expensive is because there is low demand. If the only component that really ever breaks (the display) costs almost as much as the product, can the rating really be 8/10? I'd still say the iPhone 4/4S is the most repairable product. All the components are modular and cheap. The display is $25. Back cover is $5 and takes two seconds to replace. OEM battery is $6 and takes 10 seconds to replace. The iPhone 5 is better for replacing the display, but the display part costs $60.
non (easily) removable batteries ?? how am i supposed to disable a phone in a few seconds in the cinema when it decides silent mode is irrelevant and starts making loads of noise ?
"everybody needs to replace the battery in their phone every year or 2". my nexus s now is like 3 years old now and the battery still lasts more than a day.
CodyMetal i understand this but the one reason is my moto g has been lasting a day and a half with normal use which works for me the nexus 5 barely lasted a day for me on my normal use. :)
4gb isn't even enough for the operating system. I have a 32gb nexus 5 and the initial available space is 26.7gb, making the size of the os about 5.3gb. So a 16 gb would actually only be about 10gb, are you saying you don't have 10gbs of music?... I want a phone with a tb of storage space (that is the dream).
The phone actually has a little over 12gbs of usable storage. 11 of that is music and the rest is apps. That day will come soon enough with 1 TB phones lol
I have the same problem! And I can't hard reset/factory reset it, I'am able to come so long that I can choose to reset it but then the phone just dies...
I dont understand. This guy keeps talking about Apple and how they aren't straight forward in taking their devices apart. "The battery has too much glue" or "the mother doesnt come out easy". Does he not know that 1) Apple devices have a pull-tab to get the battery out, essentially making it more user friendly? And how is it not straight forward to take out an apple motherboard. Undo the connections and take out the screws, what is so un straight forward compared to this? Some people just want to be anti-apple to be anti-apple.
Its entirely Philips once you get inside. they are different so dumb people cant easily just mess with their phones and then whine to apple that it doesnt work.
plopbellie The guy said a lot easier than taking apart my phone... pulls out an iPhone (clearly not anti-Apple). I have no idea... but he seems to know what he's talking about.
I like this guy, you can tell he is interested in what he is talking about and happy to be sharing what he does. Thumbs up :)
YEA! He seemed so happy to share
I can't get enough of your videos! I just love watching you take things apart and I don't know why!
Like these kind of videos!
thanks! we have more with ifixit and kyle coming later this month
if you like teardowns search eevblog on you tube.
Tested
Next time you upload a video with ifixit you'll have 400k subscribers. Mark my words. And send me a free phone if I'm right :)
Kyle!!!! he really knows his stuff!! kudos to him for sharing his knowledge!
Never knew my Nexus 5 is this easy to tear down. Thanks boys..very informative!!
Thank you! Very well executed, well thought out and very interesting.
I have the N5 and it easily last me a whole day.
I just am frugal about my daily usage.

I applauded each and every time he bad mouthed Apple.
Interesting to see inside and how all the parts are integrated together and what can and can't be replaced ;-)
I think this guy should make a youtube channel :D he seens very interested in what he does :)
Bought my N5, definitely the best feature:price ratio out there
Very nice video! Learned a lot! :)
Cool! Thanks for the turn on to ifixit.com.
liked the video very much but I have a question that you mentioned earlier shorter the camera shittier the image so how do slim phones like iPhone 7s or Gionee have nice camera could you please answer

Yusuf Mostafa as long as the board fits and it will works !!! !! ! !!!!!!!!!!! ! ! !! ! ! !!!!!!!!!
Can u link me to the repairing kit u showed me in the starting of video?
Nice image of the ISS's cupola there, never noticed it before.
I really like this! I'd there anything I can upgrade easily?
I really enjoyed that, was cool and different. :)
Very good video!

interesting, good guest,
After knolling, did you box it or junked the phone?
I am beginning to see/heard they have adhesive within this phone.I think that's what makes it heated from your sweat, correct? How does this freeze and be paused?
Battery only lasts a year or two? Man, phones have really gone to shit.
Just look at the processors in them, some of those phones are better than your old pc
Micic00 That may be an explanation, but not a defence.
SAsgarters
There is no need for defence, only explanation.
Micic00 Hate to disagree with you here, but that's completely backwards, in my opinion.

What are those component opposite of the front facing camera to the right that looks like 2 more cameras?
Those are the light sensors. You can tell because if you cover them up, the screen goes dark to adjust to the new lighting.
I have been told to replace antenna any advice?
any idea how to fix a no service problem after a drop down of nexus 5..please
"Nexus 5: I use now, I love it" - I thought the Nexus 5 review concluded with Norm going back to the HTC One? Perhaps this was recorded first?
good to see the actual tech of ifixit, and not the model/presenter who just reads a script but doesn't know anything about fixing phones.
The Nexus 5 currently has a critical issue: recording videos in a quiet environment will produce a loud static noise in the audio.

But where is the main Android OS installed on?If I buy third party memory replacement part do they come with Android OS?
Parts that run the os do not come with firmware and need to be flashed
Thinking of changing to a Nexus 5 from a s4. getting tired of Samsungs phone and wanna get a realy high end phone to a resonable price and i dont want a used phone so nexus 5 seems like the best option!
You won't regret it, the N5 is a great phone. My wife gave up on Samsung too and got a N4, she loves it!!
I had an Iphone 5s. Then moved to Nexus 5 just to test android out. Best phone I've ever had, Powerful, great screen, light. I love it.
you can also look to the chinese market for this kind of phones. some brands like xiaomi zte and oneplus are doin a great work on making solid quality phones and keeping the price low
awesome video
My nexus 5 take amazing pictures, never gets hot and has outstanding battery life. Could not have made a better choice.
any idea how to fix "no service" problem?

Kyle seems a cool person!
i was kinda dissapointed in the nexas 5.
The LG G2 is better even though it came out first?
why? what happened?
Well... Considering that the Nexus 5 is $350 and the LG G2 is about $700 it pretty much explains itself...

So that's why people say the phone get's too hot at the upper part of the phone :V The toaster is placed right there :V
***** I agree but with over-use it does get a bit hot on the part below the camera
Can you review the Moto X?
The headphone jack on the iPhone is a modular part. I've replaced them before.
I'm so glad i bought the nexus 5 now...for more reasons!! yay!
He said it again 00:59
Love ifixit
Is that an actual photo from the ISS or an artists impression ? The Earth looks a lot smaler and greener than in other pics I have seen, great pic though !
I think they've said it is an interpretation. But yeah it is pretty cool.
This is good video of good design
where to find a nexus 5 main board?
Hi, anyone know where I can buy a motherboard LGD820?
Didn't a LG repair manual get leaked before the phone came out.
*i have my s3 neo battery there and never touched or even removed it for about 3 years or smth*
What would happen if I replaced the 800 snapdragon with the 805 will it still work

now that i think of it the green chip surface takes really a lot of space they could make it smaller 2x times
Helped thanks alot :D
Wireless charging is the BEST , that is the most why I love Nexus(es) :D
Are those portraits in the back a Lee Nye homage?
do a nexus 6 next
at 10:31 there's a needler from Halo! to the left
hi how to making redio rimot control
nerd vs geek

this is great stuff..
Watching on my nexus 5 :)
Was it really necessary to talk about the battery and it'd glue for 6 minutes?
7:27 I know my vibrator has never broken
what happened to will? where did he go
he has such a nerdy voice
what's with the 480p?
Byron Dexter no money to buy new camera :)
Great!
Alright, on the Nexus 5, they just needed to summarize it as "sexy". Simply "sexy". That's what's inside of it. "Sexiness" is inside of Nexus 5.
Well now I know all the parts im making my own smartphone
non (easily) removable batteries ?? how am i supposed to disable a phone in a few seconds in the cinema when it decides silent mode is irrelevant and starts making loads of noise ?
Where is Gwendolyn?
HOW DID I MISS THIS REFRENCE?! WERE?!
Watching this on a nexus 5
Nice.
"everybody needs to replace the battery in their phone every year or 2".
my nexus s now is like 3 years old now and the battery still lasts more than a day.
I went for the Moto g instead of nexus 5 so yep worth it.
I doubt it
CodyMetal get one

CodyMetal i understand this but the one reason is my moto g has been lasting a day and a half with normal use which works for me the nexus 5 barely lasted a day for me on my normal use. :)
redseasplitter Easily achievable on the Nexus 5....
''This is the vibrator.''
''AAAAHHHHH''
wtf why 16 gb is not enough? Or just for me, 4 gb memory is enough for anything.
For me too, bur some people are hoarders and never delete useless stuff.
svetko05 I have a nexus 4 16gb and it's full, I have 11gbs of music, everything is whiped from the phone it' just running stock lol.

***** ahh shit, true lol
my NEXUS 5 doesn't start up anymore? it gives me "GOOGLE" and resets again and again ?
Reboot into recovery by holding the power and volume down for approx 10 seconds or so. Do a factory reset.
I have the same problem! And I can't hard reset/factory reset it, I'am able to come so long that I can choose to reset it but then the phone just dies...
khalid khouidi probably your motherboard will need replacing, lg didnt do a good job with them
Thanx

They have custom screws that they use. You have to buy special ones to open their devices. "User friendly" huh?

Nerd = is stupid but looks like geek
Geek = is smart to the extreme about something
Nerd was originally supposed to know a lot about everything.
"Exactly the opposite of Apple's designs"
Not at all true. Every iPhone since the 3G has been extremely modular and easy to repair.
I like how the Asian guy is saying ba'tt'ery..and the white guy is saying ba'dawie' ... and he totally reminds me of Mort from family guy..
me too
I got the 54 Bit iFixit kit and it really sucks build quality is soo bad would never buy it again
Tyler Simpson. oh well if the freaking iphone 4s is so cheap to repair then why does the phone itself cost 4 freaking hundred dollars
เอ้ย ไม่รู้มาก่อนเลยว่ะ our bussiness ข้างใน บ่ิมิไก๊
