  • What is a MATZ???
    A MATZ is a Military Aerodrome Traffic Zone and is exactly what it says on the tin - a traffic zone that has specific dimensions that surrounds a Military Aerodrome.
    During your PPL training here in the UK you will need to perform a MATZ Transit. In this video i talk about the common fears and misconceptions of a MATZ and how you can transit using simple radio terminology.
    This is not an in depth explanation of everything MATZ related. What it is though - is something that WILL HELP you through this part of the PPL training programme.
    MATZ Transits can be daunting at first and hopefully this video will help in some way!
    Thanks for watching,
    Stuart

    Anyone ever been refused a MATZ Transit ??

    • @stefanastley1176

      Yep, Marham. Didn't hear any other traffic on frequency, and didn't give a reason. Just abruptly told to remain clear of the MATZ. No special activity that was NOTAM'd or anything of course either.

      @@stefanastley1176 Glad you wrote that because I was looking for info on Marham in particular. Have flown in MATZ zones without asking anyone many times, but only when accessing gliding clubs with prior permission within or on the edge of the zone or flying from those clubs. Manston controllers could be nasty and unhelpful when the military ran it but they are long gone.

      With instructor and was asked to avoid area of forestry within the matz. Asked for new heading and he obliged. I get a slightly varied experience every time. Doing my solo I was asked to climb to 2500ft and “height” became discretionary.

    My qualifying cross-country included Perth to Kingsmuir and I spoke to Leuchars Radar en-route - I had a super-helpful fellow manning the radio. It's quite nice knowing that there's someone with a radar watching your back - There was an aircraft heading straight toward me (from about my 2 O'clock) which was showing on radar but was not talking to Leuchars and was not reporting altitude. Leuchars notified me of the traffic.
    A lot of people seem to be anxious about talking on the radio but I find it one of the most enjoyable things about aviation. A few weeks ago, I performed my first zone-transit, crossing Edinburgh's ATZ - There's something special about flying right over the top of an airport with heavy-metal milling about below, especially when you're in a tiny little gyro which is just an insect by comparison. Winds were strong enough that on the way back, when EGPH asked me to hold just South of the tower, I could sit in a hover and watch the world go by until they cleared me to continue - I really enjoyed it and have no reservations about doing it again in the future.

    You've maybe figured this out by now, but Leuchars isn't always manned which is probably why you didn't get a response that time. I used to fly from Leuchars fairly regularly around the time this was made, nice to hear familiar voices on the radio!

    Red circle know as ATZ or overhead transit

  • @danharrodian
    @danharrodian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @03:15. The procedure would be to take a basic service from the MATZ ATC. Ask for basic service and (if you are penetrating the MATZ) penetration - it could also be through the overhead or the stub. A MATZ will give you a basic service if you ask for it, (or if they are not busy and have capacity, a traffic service if only briefly). Be aware that MATZ controllers are service personal - service quality to GA pilots varies, unlike civilian ATCs.

    Great video Stuart. I would like to ask though, what is the procedure for transiting through the ATZ at a military airfield? Do I need to call them up again after entering the MATZ or is an ATZ transit implied in "MATZ penetration approved"?

    • @StuartThePilot
      @StuartThePilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I believe technically you should 'Request MATZ and ATZ Penetration' but I have always found using 'Request MATZ Penetration X, Y, Z' is sufficient. If the route X, Y, Z takes you through the ATZ then the controller will know your intentions to transit the ATZ and approve you anyway. You shouldn't need to call again once inside the MATZ unless the controller specifically asks you to. Hope this helps. Stuart

      Stuart The Pilot cheers Stuart. I'm learning to fly at Fenland (EGCL) in Lincolnshire, pretty much surrounded by MATZs. I've done a few normal MATZ penetrations before but never directly through an ATZ - you would think that there would be more restrictions on flying overhead military airfields, but I guess their system works at the moment

    • @StuartThePilot
      @StuartThePilot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Max Beckett you will be very used to MATZ flying in that case! Just to clarify an ATZ Transit is not implied when you are approved a MATZ Penetration outwith the ATZ - if that makes sense? I normally just say I'll be routing via the overhead so they know my route and can grant me access to the ATZ or not.

    Do you really need to put awful, irritation music over your presentation. You are imparting useful information, not hosting some radio station.
