    I am in 5a/b - in the Midwest. Every year the seasonal transition is different, meaning - like you: cold temps can stay way longer or stop way earlier than expected. Because of your tips, last year, I grew into November which is unheard of. I am putting out stuff a month sooner this spring using same. Just emphasizing - gardener has got to watch the weather and be prepared to adjust accordingly. Your tips/resources and solutions are economical, logical, and just make sense. The proof is in the plant. Thank you!

    As I watched the temperatures the first couple days of the week from FL, I worried about my cold weather seedlings. I live in zone 7 as well- right across the bay bridge. This encouraged me that they won’t all be dead when I return Saturday!

    I baby all my plants so they get covered with frost cloths inside my unheated greenhouse. Not had any issues this past week but I just hate starting seedlings over if they don't make it. Really like the well cover idea so will try that.

    I learned from the best...you. I put some of the cool weather plants out right after the last snow a couple weeks ago so I figured they got enough time to get tough. So these past few days, no cover and they're all doing just fine. Let's just hope the weather would stop going from 70 degrees one day to 20 degrees the next day bcuz I'm getting whiplash 😆 Lol

    One thing I want to add here in these basically small cold frames is the importance of adding mass for heat collection. I just use plastic jugs filled with water. And even the cold weather plants can benefit from this. My favorite are the 2 ltr soda jugs. Laying down or standing upright. They can be placed very nicely next to the plants giving the plants better protection and a wonderful 2nd life for the plastic jugs. Infact I recommend placing these in a cold frame situation with peppers and tomatoes for a extended time because both those plants really appreciate the heat and will benefit immensely from it. Now that I'm thinking about it I bet you could get a real head start on your sweet potatoes. Get a additional 2 to 4 weeks depending on where you live and give them the additional growing time that's a bit difficult in our northern states. Anyway Gary great video. I'm curious how your sweet potatoe slips are coming along. Have a great day 🌤 🍠🌱🍅🌶🍻😃

    • @WrankledEngine
      @WrankledEngine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My cold frame is 64" W x 48" deep with a south facing slope front to back from 11" to 22" the thermal mass water jug idea is great! Thank you!

    • @victorbenner539
      @victorbenner539 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WrankledEngine you bet. So here's a idea for placement of bottles. If you have something like a tomato plant you can place say 3 bottles around the plant in a upright position. They will pass sunlight through to the plant, surround the plant with gentle heat that the plant will love. But be careful of how the bottles are supported. Perhaps use some sticks in the soil and tie so bottles can't fall over crushing the new tomato plant. But laying the bottles on their sides eliminates the possibility of falling over. Anyway good luck.

      Great idea. Growing over winter, I have found that the larger the structure (cold frame, tunnel, etc.) the better things do, which I guess relates to the amount of heat stored up in the air under the plastic. But I always end up with a few things under totes and small cold frames, so I'm definitely going to give this a try.

    I direct-sowed my peas about a week ago, and it's been pretty cold a few nights since. (I'm in zone 6b).. the bed is covered with about a three inch layer of last year's leaves, and I'm hoping that's enough to protect them since they haven't even broken ground yet..

  • @brianseybert2189
    @brianseybert2189 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In zone 5, I have a 4x8 sheet of 3" foam board insulation I use over a south facing cold frame at night. I grow greens, radish, onion and carrots all winter. I also have bricks strategically placed along the south facing rear of the bed and quart sized water bottles to capture additional heat during sunny days.
    Even through our shortest and coldest days, I have never had the soil completely freeze or lost a plant in two years.
    I usually start the bed in early October with 4 or 5 week old transplants this way the plants have a good start as the days get shorter.
    The snow can be an asset to further insulate in real cold stretches. The snow can also be a pain in the @$$ when we get a heavy wet snowfall.
    All in all it is worth the effort to have fresh salads throughout our Wi winter.

    I'm in 6a-b I recently built a coldframe using hinged golf cart windshields. I had started perennial flowers Black eyed Susan & forget me not. The forget me not were in the cold frame the last 3 cold nights I have been experimenting with solar gain and a 150 halogen floodlamp as a heat source. So far I haven't killed any plants but I've seen daytime heat 15 degrees over ambient to almost twice ambient approaching 118 deg F. what are perennials danger zone temps?

    • @callikohl7603
      @callikohl7603 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found a large, thick piece of plexiglas and di a raised cold frame and so far all is well. Raised because of my bad knees and age. I'm in 5b.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice build. If you are getting to 100 F you want to vent some how to stay below that. The warmth shouldn't kill the perennials (in the 90s) but if you are doing cool crop, they will bolt. Seedlings are more susceptible to high temps or that is the risk.

    QUESTION: Hi Gary, congrats on the new Greenhouse, will you be germinating in the Greenhouse or using it for seedlings to start the spring season early and extending the seasons into late fall and winter? Will you still be using grow-lights inside and the Greenhouse as well? I'm wondering how a Greenhouse changes garden planning, can you maybe do a quick video on your intentions and if you'll still be using the polycarbonate systems to germinate as well as inside germination? Thank you

    Lessons learned: we also had those really cold (@20 degrees F) frosts for three nights in a row earlier this week. I decided to move a cold frame over some broccoli plants because I was worried they were a bit less cold-tolerant than the kale, spinach, etc. which I did NOT cover. Well, the cold wasn't the issue - I left the cold frame unvented on the last day, and when I got home from work, two of the plants had gotten cooked! Dead. Meanwhile, I should not have worried - the broccoli plants that I was unable to cover came through just fine!
