FDR voice was so powerful and uplifting and his genuine empathy and concern for all Americans always came through.. His speech on flag day 1943 was the most stirring expression of love for all men and women throughout the world always brings tears to my eyes. His generous leadership contrasts sharply with the rapacious greed and gratuitous cruelty of the Republican Party.

Interesting that Roosevelt didn't come into office until March 1933, just assumed it always January. 🤔 Great video! Seemed like the way he communicated with the nation set a standard going forward.

FDR was the last president to be inaugurated on March 4. The 20th Amendment was ratified and enacted precisely because during the four month long period between FDR’s election and his inauguration, the banking and financial system almost completely collapsed. Hoover really had no real political capital (nor imagination) to do anything about the crisis, and Roosevelt hadn’t yet had the legal authority to do anything about the mounting crisis.
That’s why the 20th Amendment was passed, providing for a much shorter interregnum, and the inauguration, beginning in 1937 (FDR’s second), was moved back to January 20th.
I think a good case could be made for shortening that gap even further - in 2008-9, world leaders were already turning to then president-elect Barack Obama during another economic crisis, before he was inaugurated. In the UK’s parliamentary system, the turnover of power usually occurs on the day following the parliamentary election.
