Wes I started out this way 45 years ago and my mechanical/engineering knowledge has built upon itself over the years. I was offered a 1955 1/2ton GMC pu when I was 13, after a summer of working I gave my folks $800.00 for it and own it to this day. My truck taught me discipline, perseverance, patients, commitment and the value of a dollar. Life happens and things will get in the way, but at the end of the day my 1955 GMC PU is still there. Soak up everything Merlin and the guys are about to teach you, it will propel you in life like nothing else you encounter. Good luck and may God bless you all in your journey.

Totally agree with you Merlin! I grew up riding my bike to a dairy farm since 11 years old. Rough environment to cut your teeth working on things. Changing hay wagon tires by hand (off the rim and back on) with the wrong tools. Straightening nails to use them. Fixing barn cleaner/sweepers when it was below 0° F outside. The list is endless. No kids want to do that nowdays. I'm glad I had that upbringing and experience in my life. You found a good egg.

All of us try to teach kids but my experience is in Motorcycles and nowhere near your knowledge. My thing was I had to learn Patience and not get mad so my kid would stick around. My dad was amazing but you only stick around for so many hammer throws especially when they come flying towards me. I have in my last good years of life (before getting crippled) run/owned shops, and have tried to train young people to work on rigs. I didn't point which kind but just a decent rig to start with(good bones) and show them basic skills. They were all about doing it till a girl friend got her nose in a twitch or they felt sick, the list of excuses came faster than I could imagine. I had one in twenty for the average that learned something. The best one was a man who was a bookkeeper for a large firm, I put him on part time wage/work and showed him just basics (during the nineties) and after six months of part time... he quit the bookkeeping firm, came on full time and was a lead mechanic in two years time. He is now a owner/operator of his own shop with two employees and just hit sixty himself... best part is he is dedicated, honest, has no bills with a nice home paid for including sending his last through college. No bills I remind you. I owned the Triple A Subaru shop in anchorage at the time so he fell into the foreign car repair with a lot more skills than I taught. I hope that this young man is a hard worker that is not afraid to get dirty, remembers his lady but doesn't let her rule him. She most likely will be a memory after a few months anyway as most girls are about how nice a car that you have or other shallow things. Yes they are important, who knows which one is the right one or a real keeper. I had a grand son who thought he was everything but wrong on life. He would come over and work for me, I knew he favored heavy equipment so paid him to run different equipment clearing land I had. I had a lot of equipment and trucks from my own different businesses. Hospitals got a good part of it but before I was to lose my home and shop, equipment (kidney failure) my insurance didn't cover but a small part of stuff, I could still go to court to win but why, I am seventy two (near three) an super bad health (pronounced dead twice in five years) but going back to that grandson, had him move my personal belongings to a cabin my brother owned and for that, gave him a dump truck, a excavator and a shop full of snap on tools (a lot of different tools but the tool chests impress customers) and I just couldn't bring myself to sell pennies on the dollar stuff that had years on it. Oddly enough, if its old, its worthless I guess so just gave him a start for getting his life a good chance. He got married a year after and I have seen most of the tools in hock shops or other including my name still on the doors of the lowboy truck, and the dump truck so as bad as it must of been, was still good enough that its still on the road twelve years later. I kept my equipment in great condition including body an paint. He is in jail an his ex wife has some of the stuff that I had given him.. he turns out to be a meth head... never can tell who will stick

You know in Australia any chassis mod needs an engineering certificate here.
I guess that does not need to happen in the USA , but you want to make sure that the chassis is done right as if it snaps in half that could be fatal.
I am sure you will do it right in any case.

I would love to be a apprentice in your shop. I would do it in a heartbeat if the commute wasn't so bad. If the price of gas was less i'd be driving to you from Alaska.

Is anyone interested in sponsoring a 6x Champion kart racer? Just this year I won at Dayton (Rolex 24) and twice at Roebling. I'm currently 2nd at the national level and 1st other 2 series. The 4th series kicks off in a few weeks. Wes.

Wes must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet to get an offer to build his own truck.
And I share your opinion when it comes to the youth who only play on the playstation, they can't even change their own bicycle tire anymore.
That's why I'm glad my 13-year-old son doesn't have a playstation or anything like it.
He can replace his bicycle tire himself, in fact we did the distribution of a suzuki vitara together and various other things, I am an old mechanic myself.
    greetings from the Netherlands.

Yup, it's a small world. My nephew looks just like yours. They could pass for brothers. He was more the rice-burner type. I wish we could have worked him a rod. Good show.

Lol I thought the previous owner tried to make a driveline brake when I saw the carrier strap around the front universal joint. Yup have seen some jalopies cobbled together. Parked 5 yrs ago huh. Hopefully. Wes seems like a nice look in finding a young protege. Seems to listen. That’s not all that common even though we were taught to be seen not heard.
