    Former USMC here (81-93)
    USCG is badass.
    My only interaction with them was early 90’s Desert Shield/Storm at Al Jubail in Saudi Arabia.
    These guys were awesome!
    So much “can do!” and “will do”!
    Highly recommend youngsters to join the United States Coast Guard!

      The coastguard and marines go pretty far back with their relationship to each-other. Most famously probably during WWII. (ie SN1 Douglas Munro at the Battle of Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942.) SN1 Douglas Munro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day, which included sacrificing his own life to ensure the safe evacuation of 500 Marines.

    • @ryanclark71

    Question- If you wear glasses how do you do the water exercises?

    • @ryanclark71
      @ryanclark71  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You will swim with goggles, minus your glasses. I wear contacts so I was able to wear them under my goggles. It's up to you if you feel comfortable enough swimming with "impaired" vision. On the plus side, you won't be performing any underwater EOD work ;)

    • @danilapre9984

    • @flanagamer
      @flanagamer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the Marines’ boot camp you have to take off your glasses during swim qual. I have terrible vision & couldn’t see s**t which wasn’t very fun, especially the tower jump. But you just kinda suck it up and make it work.

    They didn't have the red ball caps when I went through in '98. Looks odd. Of course the ODU didnt exist yet either. They just screamed at us in trops. I noticed the "grinder" was no longer painted in the parking lot either when I was passing through New London and stopped to show my kids last month. And we never got our food in the Wardroom. And if we braced as slow as they were bracing in this video.....

      upcycle Revolver is right, he was just singing a cadence. He chose that particular one because he was prior army. The Coast Guard does have commissioned medical officers and graduate programs in the medical field, however. Let me know if you'd like more info!

      Saccadon Coast Guard officers primarily serve in an administrative role, but there are certain officer career paths that are more operational than others. For example, a CG pilot or commanding officer of a cutter is very operational.
      There are three different routes a CG officer can go: Response, Prevention or Aviation. Response is known for search and rescue and law enforcement. Prevention is known for vessel and waterside facility inspections and aviation for flying helos or fixed wing aircrafts. There are also a few specialty paths one can go, such as legal, medical, etc. The CG offers competitive Grad school opportunities.

    • @ryanclark71
      @ryanclark71  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Ryan. Don't worry at all if you can't hold your breath. That portion of the program is normally reserved for NOAA cadets. The program provides you the opportunity to improve your fitness in running, swimming, push-up, sit ups; although I would recommend training well in advance for everything because there was a small number of people who either over estimated their level of fitness or under estimated the program and were ultimately kicked out of the program. But if you're a great swimmer than you already have good lung capacity and stamina.

    • @ryanclark71
      @ryanclark71  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kera, you’ve got a number of options. 1) Apply to the CG Academy (same as any 4 year military college) and get started as soon as your graduate high school. 2) Earn a bachelors degree on your own at a regular college and either apply to OCS as a civilian or, like me, enlist first and apply as an active duty Coastie. 3) Earn a certain number of college credits (I apologize but I don’t remember what is, maybe 90?) and apply for CSPI (college student pre-commissioning initiative) - in this route the CG will Pat for the rest of your college and you’ll be guaranteed as a candidate as long as you are able to meet academic/performance requirements. Highly recommend you locate your nearest recruiting office and talk to a recruiter to talk to. Note* not all recruiters are created equal.
      Let me know if you have any other questions =)

    • @ryanclark71
      @ryanclark71  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Carsan. Congrats on being selected! The PFT occurs through the entire program. However there is always a small handful of people that get kicked out within the first 2-3 weeks for not meeting minimum physical fitness standards. You’ve obviously spent a lot of time preparing your package and you’re an amazing candidate on paper so definitely spend the same time preparing your body.

      My female cousin went to CG OCS and she was in TERRIFIC shape (she can run to the sun and back, she beats ME in pushups and she has abs that'll make a personal trainer blush) so the main point I'm driving home is don't worry about how difficult the training is, once you are in shape, that training will be a breeze

      My friends dad was a Captain in the CG, we asked him why is the Coast Guard basic training on par with the Marines after watching a basic trining video of Cape May, and his response was that how can you go out into a storm and save someone else life when you can't even save your own. He said that the training in the Coast Guard has proven to be effective when peoples lives are at stake.

    • @stephenludlum9746
      @stephenludlum9746 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The training use to be harder and much longer, they accurately made it easier because of some of the injuries and shortened boot camp. But the Coast Guard only take the best people, you need a higher ASVAB score then any other service to get in. But it one of the toughest boot camp there is next to the Marines. Just the Coast Guard learn different things, but Coast Guard personnel can be assigned to other services if needed. As I spent almost two years with a Naval Security Department. So we are trained to handle a wide range of situations. And to stay alive in a wide range of situations.
