    📜 object history:
The construction of the stronghold was started in 1347 by Spycimir of the Leliwa coat of arms, the castellan of Cracow. The first castle was located on the eastern part of the hill and consisted of a residential building with a round tower and outbuildings. The whole was surrounded by a defensive wall. At the end of the fourteenth century, a five-story tower was built in the western part of the hill, which served as a defensive and residential building. At the foot of the tower, from the north-east side, there was a gatehouse, the entrance to which led through a drawbridge over the moat. The new and old fortifications were then also connected by a uniform wall. The castle was then the main seat of the Melsztyński family. The daughters of Spytek II of Melsztyn, the wives of the Piast dukes: Hedwig (wife of Bernard of Niemodlin) and Catherine (wife of Janusz I the Elder), were probably born (or were brought up here). Another major reconstruction took place in the 16th century on the initiative of the new owners of the castle, the Jordan family. At that time, the oldest part of the Melsztyn fortress was rebuilt in the Renaissance style: e.g. a three-story residential house, and the stronghold was adapted to the use of firearms. The fall of the castle in Melsztyn should be associated with the times of the Bar Confederation: in 1770, both the confederates and the Russian army, who recaptured the fortress, plundered and almost completely destroyed the castle. The building was partially demolished at the end of the 18th century (the obtained building material was used to build a church in nearby Domosławice). In the years 1879-85, on the initiative of Charles Lanckoroński, renovation works were carried out to protect the already poorly preserved ruins (the walls of the tower were reinforced and fastened with steel clamps). Only in 2017, on the initiative of the Zakliczyn Commune, reconstruction work began on the castle. In 2023, the investment was completed: the walls of the castle tower were raised to a level of 20 meters, and the whole structure was topped with a roof. The tower ultimately is 28 meters high.
