I had the seam of a Sawyer bag break on a backpacking trip. I was already dehydrated due to heat and humidity. It was a bad experience. I carry a grayl.
I'm glad you mentioned viruses. Most people don't know that most filters won't do viruses. One more good point on the Katadyn Hiker. With regular ceramic filters if you freeze them after they've been used then they will crack and will become useless. I emailed Katadyn and they told me you can freeze the Hiker because it is fiberglass and freezing it won't harm it. That's what they said in the email even though they don't advertise that feature.
Yeah i cover water filters freezing a few times on this channel in other videos prob should have said something in this video. I would like to confirm this I thought the katadyne could not freeze either. I am going to look into that. Thanks for the comment.
From personal experience: I went on a trip with a group, and only two of us had filters. I had the Sawyer with a gravity setup and the other guy had a pump filter. Everyone switched to using the Sawyer, including the guy with the pump.
Yeah its basicly the mini version of the MSR gaurdian i linked and talked about in the video but from what i can tell it does not filter viruses like its big brother. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Problem is filters are misleading Some claim an nsf certification that is color and smell only Some claim to match it but not really I earned a PhD in molecular biology and it’s still tricky to figure out which ones really work
Made my own berkey way cheaper out of 2 5 gallon pails. I am not fussy on sawyer either as the bags are known to break. Now do you want to know about the best filter in the world. Go look up "General Ecology 322200 First Need XLE Elite Water Filter for Camping (Emergency Water Purification - Removes Viruses, Bacteria and Cysts)" First need is a Water Purification!!!!!!! Not one one filter can a hold a candle to first need. I actually test the first need filter with food coloring. I test the first need against the sawyer. Note I only use the pails to hold the water. I added the ceremeic filters inside myself. I have 22 ceramic filters I bought 10 years ago on my shelf and man they they where so cheap then compared to now. I also use my 5 gallon step everyday to filter the tap water to remove the taste of bleach which works great. First need is my back packing filter and have been using it for years. I am currently going to buy a 2nd one for my get home back. Love the logo. LOL
Thanks for the comment. I just did a quick look at the General Ecology 322200 looks pretty good i like that is claims it will remove viruses I just have never heard of this company before. But i like keeping up with all the products people send me so thanks! The first time you commented here i though someone was commenting as me our logos are so similar.
@@citizensurvivalplannaaaa We just happen to have the same logo. I did 2 years of research trying to find the best filter. Could you filter chorine from a pool? Can you filter your urine? If a dead body was down stream can you filter and till drink? First need came up. I did a lot of testing with it. The reason you never heard of it is because some youtube was not being paid to do it. I made a few videos on it. But you will find nothing better. When you use it the first time you will be like where you been all my life. Expensive for sure but nothing is better.

Lifestraws are terrible!
They work but the way you have to apply them does suck.
