I’ve spent some 30 years as a carpenter an Joiner. I must say I’m highly impressed given your limited tool kit and the fact you built it on your kitchen table. Top marks to you. It sounded fairly decent to given that the pick ups were cheap an not quiet set up the way you wanted. You should be very proud of yourself . Big thumbs up 👍 .
My Grandpa and I built a Flying Vee body out of an old oak church pew, the body weighed at least 9 pounds, but Grandpa called it the "Swallowtail'" it never really flew, but at least Grandpa showed me how not to worry about the construction, it was the end result that mattered, glad to see the old drill holes/chisel technique, put in a few tremolos and pick ups with that one, Cheers to you.

I love how you just picked out a hunk of wood from the local hardware store. Planed and sanded them by hand, and didn't use any fancy routers or CNC machinery! The faux binding turned out awesome too! I admit that I was skeptical at first, but you did a fine job on it. I've built a Tele kit and want to do a build one from scratch. I thought about buying a body blank, but you've inspired me to venture out and buy my own wood! Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful cool guitar with us. I love the simplicity of it. I literally see you EVERYWHERE Dart Man! 😂 Some of the most sought after Teles from back in the day had pine bodies made from hardware grade lumber and had no truss rods. I just used my GFS body as a template and made a body out of a pine 2x4 that I had laying around. Give it a shot man, even if you mess it up you arent out but a few bucks. I hope that you and yours are well, happy new year!

I'm near 70 now and look back at doing things by hand and having a sense of accomplishment then but I may hav been better off using power tools and having more time to actually play
Amazing how little the telecaster has changed over the years. Leo believed in KISS method, and apart from minor changes/adjustments, it's still basically the same guitar for 60 some odd years.
Nice! I just found a couple of discarded wooden fence posts near a farm and am thinking of making a Tele style guitar body with them. I think they are probably Scots Pine.

I've been thinking of a telecaster build for a while i've just finished two dreadnought acoustics one for a friend, so i'm hoping a telecaster will be easier, though i plan to build the neck myself you have given me the impetus ,nice job with minimal tools proves you don't need a workshop full of tools ,impressive build,i like the tommy walsh varnish i've got a few pots of that ill give them a go.
looks amazing and you are a great craftsman! i am planing on building one soon just don't know yet if i will make out out of a tree i cut down or store bought pine.

That video was amazing. To fill these lockdown days, I was looking to build a strat, so I've been looking at tonewood, routers, nitro, spray mask etc etc etc. What I'm gonna do now is draw round a guitar onto an old kitchen bench, and start chipping away! Also, it was good to see the neck go on like that, just line it up, and done! You're quite the 'can do' guy. I'm not making mine in the kitchen though :). And well done on having surgically clean fingernails
I've now got all the bits inc a pre-made neck, I have a friend who is a furnature maker so he will be hellping me joint the reclaimed 18"x 6" x 2" 100 year old timbers.

Great video!!! I'm moving to pine in my 'casters as it is getting too expensive to find some of the "traditional(?)' woods for a guitar build. Besides, Leo Fender started with pine and Fender is now going back to pine. Also, I'm more of a hobby builder than a guy looking to make a living from selling my guitars. I've made two with pine, I don't know why they even stopped using it? It's plenty hard enough, has nice grain figuring and I've not had resin seep out either of them ;0)
@@GetawaysandGuitars I'm guessing they stopped using the pine as woods like alder, poplar, and ash were a little harder and would support that nitrocellulose paint a bit better.

Ive made a few with pine recently, laminated, same the the neck( quarter sawn) what ive found... the quarter sawn neck is very stable.. the body not so, they tend to move .they sound great pine guitars but i think its important to use dried out wood or old pine👍
Great pine can be had from building stores, with some work. 1) stick with 2x10, or better, 2x12. Look at the endgrain and find the ones with a bit of Heartwood in the center. Either side of the heart is essentially quarter sawn. 2) cut it down almost to size, then forget it for 2-6 months in your climate controlled home. It will dry during this time, and if it's going to warp or bow, it will. You'll have to plane it afterwards to get back square and true, but it's worth the effort for the quality and savings. Heck Everytime I go to the home supply, I look for a knot free quartersawn plank. I don't find one every time, but when I do, it gets cut down to 4' boards and saved back. Probably have 300 board feet or more of SYP right now.

Did you get the neck pocket right by drilling and chiseling instead of using a router? The guitar sounds great and looks good too. Any problems with the carpentry grade pine after two years? I agree with the comments below. Impressive work!
Yeah the neck pocket is nice and snug! The wood is fine too, no cracks, weeping or faults that I can see. Sometimes I wish I had dyed it green though like Frances Rossi of Status Quo's guitar. That would have made it a lot cooler! ;0)
Got to admit, at first, I thought, nah, he's not going to run with this. It's a template, but after you stuck it all together, and played it, it sounded great haha. Great job.
That's a beauty of a guitar! I do think deserves better pickups... Depending on budget, Wilkinsons, Toneriders... or really go to town with Lollars or Fralins? For what it's worth, I put Tonerider Vintage Classics and 250k pots with a 0.22 uF cap in my Tele partscaster and have been super happy with the result compared to the Squire pickups with 500k pots that were in it before.
Well.. it does have mini 250k pots and a cheap 0.22uf cap! I get you but it sounds pretty good before it gets to youtube really. It was just a fun project because I had the neck laying around off the Tele I upgraded and it turned out better than I thought. I wish I'd bought some long clamps for gluing the planks together ;0)
TH-cam video processing can do funny stuff to the audio, so that makes sense. The guitar looks really great, and I'm inspired to follow your example in a year or two when I've built a few more guitars from parts and have a few more tools. The straps did seem to work ok in the end - did something happen behind the scenes?
Well I wish I had someone with a table saw to cut the chamfered edge off the wood before I started. I didn't show it but I put dowels in the planks but even with them they moved about a millimeter so I had to sand down more than I needed too. Long clamps would have been much better. At the wood joins at the slight gaps left I made a paste of wood sandings and glue. A more accurate cut would have been perfect.

Well, i were inspired and ordered a diy kit from China to try building a guitar (A basswood steinberger body and headless neck, maple and rosewood fretboard). Im going to apply nice looking veneer to the body and maybe also the neck if possible. The fretwork on the China neck will most likely be horrible so I will most likely take out the frets and refret it myself with a thin fretwire. Will likely go with active pickups since the wood is propably not of the highest quality and active pickups tend to sound good in any wood.

I started just before I went on holiday in September for 3 weeks. Done bits here and there thru October. Lots of sanding to shape! Varnishing it over the last few weeks and sanding it back again till I was happy enough. I was in no real rush ;0)
Next time go way slower on the varnish... I’m a home builder too using pound shop buts where I can.. that tommy Walsh works better in super super thin coats built up.. just a tip.. I’m going to give that faux binding a try... nice one mate
I know this is an older post, but I have a question I hope you will answer. I love the idea of just going to your local big box store and building a guitar out of pine.. I was going to try my first build, until I read on the forums that there is too much moisture in the pine you get from those places, and the body will shrink or warp over time as it loses moisture... How is your guitar doing after all this time? Any issues like that?

That's a beauty of a guitar! I do think deserves better pickups... Depending on budget, Wilkinsons, Toneriders... or really go to town with Lollars or Fralins?
For what it's worth, I put Tonerider Vintage Classics and 250k pots with a 0.22 uF cap in my Tele partscaster and have been super happy with the result compared to the Squire pickups with 500k pots that were in it before.
Well.. it does have mini 250k pots and a cheap 0.22uf cap! I get you but it sounds pretty good before it gets to youtube really. It was just a fun project because I had the neck laying around off the Tele I upgraded and it turned out better than I thought. I wish I'd bought some long clamps for gluing the planks together ;0)
TH-cam video processing can do funny stuff to the audio, so that makes sense. The guitar looks really great, and I'm inspired to follow your example in a year or two when I've built a few more guitars from parts and have a few more tools. The straps did seem to work ok in the end - did something happen behind the scenes?
Well I wish I had someone with a table saw to cut the chamfered edge off the wood before I started. I didn't show it but I put dowels in the planks but even with them they moved about a millimeter so I had to sand down more than I needed too. Long clamps would have been much better. At the wood joins at the slight gaps left I made a paste of wood sandings and glue. A more accurate cut would have been perfect.

I used Libron wood dye, really any wood or leather dye should do.

I hate staining pine, its so difficult to get a good result with commercial stains. But you did very well with your diy stain.

Well, i were inspired and ordered a diy kit from China to try building a guitar (A basswood steinberger body and headless neck, maple and rosewood fretboard). Im going to apply nice looking veneer to the body and maybe also the neck if possible. The fretwork on the China neck will most likely be horrible so I will most likely take out the frets and refret it myself with a thin fretwire. Will likely go with active pickups since the wood is propably not of the highest quality and active pickups tend to sound good in any wood.

It was Tommy Walsh polyurethane varnish from Poundworld!! ;0)

I started just before I went on holiday in September for 3 weeks. Done bits here and there thru October. Lots of sanding to shape! Varnishing it over the last few weeks and sanding it back again till I was happy enough. I was in no real rush ;0)
Will you be doing a decaffeinated one as well? Kidding! Awesome build there.
I have seen a bloke use his own blood once to colour a guitar! Sort of the colour I wanted but I'm sure it would go brown pretty quick ;0)

Next time go way slower on the varnish... I’m a home builder too using pound shop buts where I can.. that tommy Walsh works better in super super thin coats built up.. just a tip.. I’m going to give that faux binding a try... nice one mate

I know this is an older post, but I have a question I hope you will answer. I love the idea of just going to your local big box store and building a guitar out of pine.. I was going to try my first build, until I read on the forums that there is too much moisture in the pine you get from those places, and the body will shrink or warp over time as it loses moisture... How is your guitar doing after all this time? Any issues like that?
No problems at all! Its still stable, this and my LP/Strat hybrid. Fender are now using pine again as Ash is in very short supply ;0)

The first neck didn’t work out? You didn’t address swapping them. But nonetheless a nice build. Love the color!
The neck was from the Telecaster upgrade I did. I got an unfinished maple neck off ebay and used Tru oil to finish it.
I have a question. Is not pine a too soft wood to make an electric guitar?

Not really, I don't plan on bashing it about really! My Les Paul Strat hybrid is made of Redwood pine and its solid!
