When I left school, I worked on a farm that had an Ayrshire Bull, that ran with the cows in the winter. The cowman would keep him in the collecting yard, at milking time because if he got in the parlour he would get stuck. All well and good, but when the boss did the milking, he would use a pitch fork to keep the bull back. My first job in the mornings was to give the bull his breakfast, and he was never any trouble, but this one morning, I think he had a jab or two from the fork, and he wasn't in the best of moods. He hit me in the back as I was emptying the bucket, and then rolled me up and down the hay rack, like I was a straw. After that he got more and more aggressive, attacking the Vet twice. Never think you know them, and certainly never trust them.
That damn bull would have been shipped to the kill plant a lot sooner. Cattle temperment is crucial to farm safety. Select for docility. Ship those rank cows and bulls to the kill plants. We have the facilities to handle those rank bastards. As a former federal meat inspector in the States, the best place for rank cows and bulls is a meat hook.
Very sad story, I remember this accident, met James since & truly sorry. Farm Safety high priority. Farming very tiring as a one man job, but it is the life of a farmer. Take heed, be safe.
My boss had a massive Hereford bull which was a real gentle giant. We had another farm miles away, and when we moved him intne trailer, I always stayed in the trailer with him because he was nervous in there. He really was like a big baby. U wiuld bever trust a Friesian bull, or any of the highly strung continental breeds
No particular breed of bull is safe. Five different breeds have attached people over the years. I recall a woman saying that when she came from town the quiet bull had killed her husband.
My dad was all most killed my a bull. It rolled him up and down a concrete wall like a rag doll if it wasn't for his brother saving him that bull would have definitely ended him.
Despite being domesticated animals, bulls are known for being extremely dangerous, aggressive and unpredictable. Bulls should be treated as wild animals and they do not make good pets. I know lots of people that have attempted to keep bulls as pets and they ended up getting injured or even killed. As mentioned previously, bulls should be treated as wild animals and you should never allow a bull calf to head butt you. It’s harmless when they are little but sooner or later it’s going to grow up to be 2000 pound tank that can easily snap a person in half.

After viewing a number of these stories, I've seen that the ones that are raised by hand are better tempered than those raised at pasture with nothing but other cattle as examples to follow. At least a bull-calf raised by hand has had a man push him around somewhat and to some degree accepts him as the boss. Still have to be careful of course, but I'd rather this kind of bull than one that was raised feral.
watchgoose the safest kind of bulls are the ones scared of humans, taming them makes them dangerous and unpredictable because they can change moods in the blink of an eye without us realizing it. Ask any dairy farmer who’s hand raised bulls as calves, you never trust them no matter how comfortable they are around humans because they aren’t scared of ya at that point and won’t hesitate to challenge you with any wrong movement

Whilst I did really take to one of those bottle calves I raised once over all the others, he, as the others were all Steers, not Bulls. Also, despite the fact I really did love Bob, I remained consious of what he could do at all times! Ultimately, there are NO totally safe animals in existence, whilst you may learn to love some, never forget that.
Exactly the opposite watchgoose. Hand reared bulls are by far the most dangerous, they may display all round geniality with humans but they don't know the difference. They will attack a human as they will another bull because there is no fear or respect for the human, they don't know the difference. Also, the most docile, friendly bull is the most dangerous. He is the one who will kill you.
You're raising these poor animals for the slaughterhouse and you don't think there will be any negative Karma? You better study cause and effect & purify your Karma.
Inappropriate and insensitive. We should respect others beliefs for sure, but you should also respect the impact of this incident, and express your beliefs in a more appropriate forum. I'm sure they cared well for their animals as responsible farmers do. But even if they didn't (which I see no evidence of here), there is no need for such a comment. A well-loved family man lost his life. Perhaps you've just earned some 'negative karma' yourself for such an unnecessary comment? (For the record- I don't eat meat myself for a number of reasons, but I respect that farmers work bloody hard, my family eat meat and we should all be allowed to make our own decisions about such things. As long as farmers are being responsible and decent to their animals it is not my place to comment. I moved to the UK countryside a decade ago from London, and have learned so much about what farmers do, the trials they face etc. They are largely hard-working folk who care a great deal about the environment, their community and their livestock. You speak about studying 'cause and effect'. Maybe you should try and learn something about this industry before you comment?)

The wisdom of farmers - never turn your back on a bull. Also - once you find out you've got a bad animal on your farm it's time for that animal to go.
