- Our video about the icon and the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God; is a Great Feast of the Eastern Orthodox which commemorates the "falling asleep" or death of Mary the Theotokos ("Mother of God", literally translated as God-bearer), and her bodily resurrection before being taken up into heaven. It is celebrated on 15 August (28 August N.S. for those following the Julian Calendar) as the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

Thomas always missing out
Ha ha true.
But thomas was in mission work at that time. Tradition teaches us that as thomas was rushing to be by the side of mother mary, he saw mother travelling into the heaven up above. He understood he is late and he called out to her. Mother mary saw him and threw her girdle or belt (or soonoro in Syriac language) at him. Thomas took it with him in great reverence and the Holy Church considers it as a holy relic.

Perhaps someone can help me gain some clarity. So Orthodox believe that Mary's body was not assumed into heaven? I was always under the impression that we did.
It is part of Tradition that her body was taken up in to heaven after her repose. but that is an Apocryphal story and is not part of the main story... but is considered part of sacred tradition. if that makes sense

yes your right the main story is apocryphal. we simply commemorate the day she reposed because of her great importance, and it is a fact that she did indeed repose... the story around it may not be full canon, but it matters little in grand scale of things. and you are welcome!

And how do we know these things to be true? There is no mention of this in any of the books.
There is always more to a story that is left out of books. We know thing not only through books and letters, but by the oral tradition. We do not need to read much about modern Christmas traditions surround the birth of Jesus, we just know them by living the traditions and church's oral and artistic traditions. Tradition also has it that Moses himself had a speech impediment.

The problem I have with this is not in the Bible though I am driven by orthodoxy. There is no scripture about this.
Scriptures and oral teachings are the Orthodox traditions. Not everything about the faith is in the scriptures. This is one of the Holy traditions that was passed down orally and through iconography. You can trust it, my friend, because the Holy church has kept it and taught it.
We are not Sola Scriptura.
If it's not in scriptures then I won't trust it.
Brother, scriptures + tradition = Christianity. There are many things that are not included in the Holy Scriptures. We learn about them from the teachings of apostles, apostolic fathers, etc. Traditions are passed over from generation to generation either orally or in writing.
Martin Luther isn't in Scripture either
Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, is the only intercessor between God the Father and mankind, so turn to Him and NOT Mary who can not even hear your prayers!
The saints can hear, the problem is that this tradition is from 5 to 6 century, and early fathers never said not about, the centrality of the Virgem as the Ark of the Covenement is something the church recive from the Holy Spirt after the time of the early church.

@@firefromfire4429 You are clearly into goddess worship! But Mary the mother of God is no god nor a dispenser of divine grace. This is solely the work and gift of God the Holy Trinity besides whom there is no god or goddess. Will you get that into your pagan brain?
