Atari Buys Intellivision! But What's it All Mean?!

- News was broken about 2 days ago that Intellivision and a library of 200 associated games are now owned by Atari. But what does all this mean for the future of Intellivision, the previous owners (creators of the Amico) and for us consumers? I don't know, but I like to speculate. So lets get into it!

Atari owns Digital Eclipse and they were working on the Night Stalker and Cloudy Mountain remakes so I'm hoping they get completed and show up on the VCS and other consoles soon.
I can imagine they'll remake those Intellivision games for the Atari systems in house.
Playing them on a Atari 2600+ would be a crossover we never thought we could see.
Right now, their best bet would be to put games and an Inty emulator on the gamestation pro and design Intellivision specific controllers for it.
If they don't do an INTV+ they could at least do some digital collections of the games on PC and modern consoles and offer new USB controllers with reprints of the overlays to play them properly. Those controllers really are integral to the experience, I have the Intellivision Lives collection of PS2 and it just doesn't feel right playing with a Dual Shock 2.

At best maybe a second upgraded version of their recent VCS I think. An actual console would be a huge investment and risk, mostly is who would make games for it? I know Atari has some studios but ... I still think a VCS 2 would be best and most likely.
It certainly looks that way when you think about it.
ATARI now have in-house development teams for modern and retro games and continues to support and update the VCS800 OS.
As for Intellivision, I think the following products would make sense to me:
1). Intellivision cart adaptor for the 2600+ and Polymega/Polymega Remix.
2). Enhanced Intellivision games and re-issues.
3). Official release of unreleased 2600 games (in a completed state).
4). 7800, Lynx, and Jaguar ports of Intellvision's best games and cult classics.
5). Intellivision Recharged and re-imagined games.
6). Add Intellivision (and Jag/Lynx) emulator and games to the ATARI VCS800 Store.
7) ATARI 50-style Intellivision compilation for VCS800 and modern platforms.
As for Intellvision+, that might do well in America, but the system is virtually unknown anywhere else.
It would make more sense for ATARI to utilise the 2600+, and release an Intellivision adaptor. ATARI should also release an Intellivision mini-system with an S.D. slot.

I see this as a good thing. Atari will handle the Intellivision property better and actually release games. This seems to be a part of their overall strategy to simply be the name and source for all gaming pre-NES in the modern era. I wouldn't be surprised if the Colecovision brand is bought by Atari next.
i would prefer they went after the Odysee 2, would be a much better fit.
Coleco better watch out. If Atari fixes there gaze on them they might be next. If that happens then Atari will be the king of Retro!

@@derekdash2179 so there's a holding group that's a subsidiary of some other things that owns the name. Coleco Holdings is literally what it's called but I don't think they have any right to software. Or if they do then not much. Coleco would be a lot messier to be sure...

My first impression was “wow, this is huge”. Atari and Intellivision were huge rivals back in the day. But now I am curious just how much the practical impact will be.
That's the thing, it's probably more impactful as an idea than practically. We will hopefully get some games and things out of it but I think Atari would want to be positive that the market is there before releasing anything major. But I have confidence that Atari can bring some prestige back to the brand if anybody can. They've done well enough with their own stuff the last few years!
That atari 50 collection is off the chain! I really wish they'd re-release the jaguar. Can you do a review of that jeff minter collection joint that just came out?
I could. I'd have to grab it first and play it but yeah that could be a neat idea. I was hoping it would come to VCS but I'll just grab it on steam...
@TheAtariNetwork As a kid from the 80s I dig what you're putting out. Yeah please put some jeff minter piece out. He's as essential to video games as the Beatles are to rock and roll. They got the jeff minter game on ps4 and 5 too.
I hope that Atari eventually acquires the Colecovision and Odyssey libraries in the future.
Atari needs to get Shark! Shark! and Astrosmash from BBG, and in 2029, release a Digital Eclipse made Intellivision 50. Oh, and while they are at it, get the Data East catalog from G-Mode since Intellivision had some good Data East arcade ports.
Great take, Jon. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m a little confused by the acquisition for a couple of reasons. First, as you mentioned, what is the direction of Atari and how does this add to it? Second, I didn’t think the Intellivision brand had much value. From a software perspective, what must-play games does it have? I don’t think there’s any except to the diehard Intellivision fans.
I have been interested in the Intellivision though, so I picked up an RGB modded Intellivision and also have a Intellivision 2. Sadly, I haven’t gotten around to playing it except for a game or two. I did accumulate a decent library with an SD cartridge as well as well as some homebrews.
One thing I did as a reaction to this announcement was to buy the Intellivision collections for the Evercade-in case they were yanked from the shelves in the near future.
Time will tell on what all this means and how we gamers may benefit, and we’re here for the ride.
That's a good point, existing collections could easily be removed due to the new ownership. I don't see a whole terrible lot that interests me but there probably is value there if they have a massive generational collection. And I could see an Astrosmash recharged or something like it bringing some interest.

I can’t remember any Intellivision games worth bringing back. As kids I remember us seeing some odd keypad with some kind of slide card. Hopefully, they purchased it VERY cheaply.

I've been wondering why, and just a little while ago I started wondering if they bought them just for the PR alone.
I think an Intellevision Vault on the VCS is a no brainer, but i could see them holding off for a DE collection. Just speculating though. I think a mini cart player is also a good idea
It means that IntyBASIC is now illegal and we must use BatariBASIC now when making Intellivision homebrew.

It's a good move. With the original Atari having sold at least 10-to-1 compared to the Plimpton-era Intellivision, I wouldn't expect to see an Intellivision+ (althought I'd buy one). However, the scummy Amico team was able to raise $17+ million leveraging the Intv brand. I think there may be an appetite for an Intellivision+. Alternatively, Atari might be able to make an adapter for the 2600+ to handle Intv carts, and include controllers. You're right, though, with Digital Eclipse in the fold, a compilation of some sort is on the horizon.
I bought my Atari 2600+ just this week. I'm pleased with how it operates and the graphics look so much cleaner and more modern on the HDMI flat screen.
As per the narration in the video, I could see Atari releasing a compilation of Intellivision games, now that they own the rights to them. Perhaps we could see a 10-games-in-one-cartridge like the one that comes with the 2600+.
If Atari wants to take that approach, then Dungeons & Dragons has to be part of the package if it wants Intellivision-related business from me.

I think the new Atari could if they don't spend money just to spend it. Every move has to be with an end goal, every purchase has to provide value and profit. I'm hoping that this is all leading somewhere but I honestly don't know. I wish I could get on the inside sometimes and see what Atari is thinking...

If you read the ATARI press release, ATARI does say what they intend to do with the Intellivision games.
I'm looking forward to seeing which unreleased 2600 games ATARI now have.
I'd also buy an Intellivision adaptor and controllers for the 2600+ too.
7800, Lynx, and Jag Intellivision updates would get my money.

I have multiple theories.
1. Atari has a minority stake in polymega and they anounced that they want to Develop an atari Element module and put atari games in their Webshop (when that finally launches.) I guess intellivision will probably come next.
2. I think they will produce retro consoles, compilations etc.
3. I think the next brand atari has an eye on might be commodore
Better to have it and not need it than need it than not have it. Really, though, I think it's a good move by Atari. Not sure how Intellivision fans are feeling right now, but I think it's safe to say that Atari will be better owners of the IP than the previous lot were.
Atari should buy up Coleco next.
One day Nintendo will buy Sega... Just how things go.

I hate to say it but most Intellivision games just don't hold up all that well today. The games are just a little too primitive and basic. I'm old enough to have played it when it launched, and even then I felt sort of underwhelmed. It didn't have the wow factor of the Colecovision. I didn't play the whole library, but what I did play was just OK.
EDIT: And you might say the 2600 IPs are even older, but the difference is those games have been iterated on and updated over the decades. Intellivision games largely have not.
I'd agree. I think if Atari could obtain the Coleco games and license then a compilation of the best all time games from the early years would be a must own for most people. Atari 50th but it also encompasses Intellivision, Coleco, Odyssey and the first and third party games for those consoles. I think that has to be one of the end goals right?
@@TheAtariNetwork I disagree completely, I see a lot of Atari people commenting on the intellivision library without having the necessary knowledge of the intellivision brand, there's a lot of good games that could be recharged or reimagined for PC steam or for the VCS , switch, Atari Jaguar, Atari 7800, to name a few , both dungeons and dragons games , cloudy mountain and treasure of tarmin that don't have any equivalent in the colecovision library, I know it , I own also the colecovision console, the three tron games, night stalker, tower of Doom, thunder castle, Utopia, B-17 Bomber, Bomb squad, Also Digital Eclipse told us in the newsletter that they were excited by the acquisition of the intellivision brand, Digital Eclipse for peoples who don't know, they did a new recharged version of Night Stalker and Cloudy mountain for the Amico, I saw some gameplay and both games look great, I'm all for Atari buying the right for Colecovision and Odyssey 2 , but before doing that , can we please take care of the intellivision library and brand, my other wishes would be that atari would do an intellivision + or as a second choice an intellivision mini that we could add roms. I had mixed feeling when Atari bought the intellivision brand but in the final I think it's a good thing because the actual owner were tarnishing the intellivision legacy with the Amico console that might never come out. That's my viewpoint , I had to say it because the intellivision was my first console and I have a lot of nostalgia for it, thanks for the video Jon

Looking at the library I don't see a whole terrible lot that interests me over the 2600 and Coleco but that could be due to complete ignorance. I doubt Atari would purchase Coleco or anything soon and I think they will do something with Intellivision. As always I appreciate the support Pierre!

At one time this would have been thought of as the odd couple, but now it makes sense. Atari seems to be on a roll with games and consoles. Intellivision could use some help, just get rid of those horrible disc controllers 😃

I recommend real hardware if you want an intellivision. That way you have access to all software if available. Getting a plug and play system means many lost liscensed games wont be on the plug and play. If you are serious about collecting. I bought my intellivision a few years ago and have bought most of the original library and a lot of homebrews wich are phenomenal. I love the system. Many games but not all are superior onthe intellivision. I will be honest. Yeah i know its a taboo to say.lol

I hope the added cash can help the Amico. I've heard a lot of moaning from people who were still waiting for it.
I think this is all good for Atari. The new games will be a welcome addition to the Atari repertoire.
A retrospective like the Atari 50th Anniversary collection would be ideal, but maybe too much to expect.
My hope is that perhaps now the future of retro gaming will no longer be dominated by the Nintendo game boys.
It could be the last injection they needed to get over the hump. But I really don't know. I guess we'll have to see how it plays out for all sides in the coming months!
