This is Max Roach's solo For Big Sid, the Drums Unlimited version. Couldn't quite get through the whole thing straight (It's too damn long!) so I had to record it in 3 parts. Sorry for the bad editing:)

Bravo! I had the honor and opportunity to see Big Max live three times. It was something special to live in that time and see him playing at the peak of his abilities. He was between 56 and 60 years old at the time. His power and virtuosity were thrilling.

This is absolutely fantastic. I'm blown away by how close you got to Max's sound. If I close my eyes it sounds like Max.
Loved it, absolutely. Max’s phrasing’s and pure and unadulterated style is so inspiring. Now as then, 60 and nearly 70yrs ago his playing speaks wisdom and emotions in equal measure.
I love his sense of calm and poise while kickin' it!
Thing is, despite the flaws, you copped the Max feeling. Lots of guys to this one; yours gets the spirit of it.

You did a great job here! You really did well getting Max's feel and touch. He had a flow when he went around the toms on this solo, and I can tell you worked on that. Like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit. Thumbs up!

Wow! Beautiful! Max was my first serious influence on drums. I was inspired enough to become a drummer and his influence has always stayed with me. It is the composition and musicality, showing drums can be as expressive as the other instruments. Max could get the drums to respond to his expressive capability. As to playing, somebody once said, there are two types of drummers. Those that just throw a technique at a drum and expect it to respond and sound good. The other type of drummer tries to get the drum to sound as he/she is hearing it and coax the sound out. I admit by asking my drums nicely, (because I have great respect for them) I have had much more fun doing the latter.Great playing Quincy!

This is great. I've learned this solo from this recording too and noticed there's some really subtle ghost notes on the snare when Max goes back to the main theme at the end. I was curious to see what you think he's doing there since I've never seen him do that on any of the live videos..

Max Roach composed it as a homage to Big Sid Catlett, whose solo in Boff Boff is to this day unequaled. Unfortunately I have not seen it in TH-cam, except a bad quality live version
Correction : thanks to Marathonracer I found a great upload of Boff Boff , and Big Sid 's amazing solo, from 1947 !, on youtube under Louis Armstrong Boff Boff . If you liked what Max Roach did in honor of Big Sid, please listen to that better version.

Try transcribing its always helpful in the long run.
