    Hi. Hawaii resident here.
My wife and I were getting ready to leave the house Saturday morning when our phones went off with the ballistic missile alert. All we could do was close up the house and frantically search online to see if it was true or not. There was nothing online and my wife searched how long it would take a ballistic missile to arrive in Hawaii.
    She said "Fifteen minutes".
You know that feeling when you almost get into a bad car accident and your life flashes before your eyes and you begin to appreciate life a bit more? Imagine that for 38 minutes.

yes I have been wondering, all the jokes aside what kind of a horrible feeling it must have been which would for many people have been quietly taken over by a sad acceptance of death. This kind of shit just cannot happen.

There aren't any nuclear shelters anymore. There used to be large numbers of what were claimed to be "shelters" all over the USA, marked by distinctive signs - but these were just stone or concrete buildings of various kinds. They could not have actually saved many people, nor did they have any supplies to sustain anyone. Military and government buildings did sometimes have actual fortified shelters with food and water, but these weren't accessible by the public.

Yeah especially if you know how fast ICBM's are. A missile from NK to Hawaii would take under 30 minutes, so by the time you get an alert there's really nothing you can do unless you have a proper shelter within a few miles. I'm shocked a lot more people didn't do things that they'd regret in that time.

This kind of shit is dangerous. With the prevalence of depression in this country, you just know there's at least one person out there who went "Welp, this is it!" and shuffled themselves off. Not to mention that it undermines trust in the whole system!
And god damn, it's just bad UI/UX design! The 'Are you sure' confirmation should INCLUDE which option it is you selected. 'Are you sure?' does nothing to tell the employee whether they selected missile alert or missile alert _test_ which kinda defeats the purpose of a confirmation!!!
As for why it took Trump so long to react to the situation...I think we all know he was trying to figure out whether or not Hawaii is a state.

people here in hawai`i reacted in diverse ways that often reflected their lives: my local wife was trying not to freak initially, but soon became suspicious like me finding it odd that the air raid sirens weren't going off, nor any interruption or change in tv, radio or internet broadcasting. soon we were all just pissed at how stupid the warning was because it was completely worthless! "stay indoors?" not more helpful than a nightlight. the thought that "so this is how it goes down..." crossed my mind- but soon it was just pissed that canadians or other nations aren't living in this type of threat because they don't operate like the USA! this is life on military colonies like hawai`i, okinawa, guam, etc. where we live everyday a potential target or accident due to the concentration of military here- for interests very far away from here. i worked at a low-income farmer's market soon after the alert was cleared. mostly impoverished immigrants & hawaiians that survive day to day anyway, or elderly- many who have lived through US wars...the mood was like mine- irritated that governments pursue militarism & war, often bringing the wars of washington and other capitols- to shores like that of pu`uloa, aka "pearl harbor." but then we heard stories of people freaking out on the road and many of our friend's teen children having anxiety and panic attacks- heartbreaking. this is not security- war is the absolute failure of leadership, but many of us in hawai`i expect no less from the one nation that invaded hawai`i, overthrew & never restored justice the nation of hawa`i- we continue to be sacrificed for the US empire, but we continue ku i ka pono- fight for justice. this false alarm was just another friendly fire against civilians of another occupied indigenous nation, relax people...

I am Canadian, and I am terrified everyday. We are all in this Hell ride together. We will catch all the fallout, even if we are not directly hit in an exchange of missiles. And if the US decides that , in the aftermath of an attack, it needs our resources, the US government will feel completely fine about coming up here and taking everything WE have at gunpoint. The US government does not have the morals or ethics of a rabid alley cat.

oh but you are wrong there, not only I read your comment but also you are missing the whole point on mine, and still is. even if the US has a better/bigger nuclear arsenal than NK. It wont really matter who started it. You argue that "doesn't make sense for the smaller person to stomp on the toe" but actually it pretty much do if your oponent is not treating you with respect you deserve. Once the nukes are in the air, it doesn't matter where they will land, everyone loses. So instead of thinking NK will never attack the US mainland, you should remmeber that from the past 50 years the US goverment acted as the bully on the school yard, going and hitting everyone as they pleased.

If there was a missile the military sends a call to the state Emergency Management Agency, which sends an alert (sirens, radio, tv, notifications) to us. Every state has different possible emergency situations to deal with (Hawaii has hurricanes, tsunamis, etc), so its really up to every state to be in charge. Hawaii also has monthly drills and siren checks. EMA deals with the communication aspect rather than the scanning of the skies for missiles part.

In the Honolulu Star Advertiser they showed a timeline of what happened. The military did confirm to the state officials that no missile was inbound after 8 minutes (not sure of the exact minutes). The reason for the 38 minutes is because the national security alert system doesn't have a means of retraction or saying "oops". Hawaii officials had to get permission from FEMA to send out the retraction.
When I heard this on the radio, I wasn't worried at all. Just because North Korea can launch a missile, it doesn't mean they can hit what they want to hit. Has anybody seen NK hit a target yet? They can barely get the missile off the ground, I doubt they care about targeting. Not to mention, I didn't have anywhere to go to seek shelter from a nuclear blast.

    • @dennisshumard9626
      @dennisshumard9626 6 ปีที่แล้ว

R Age I agree on not knowing where to go. If they ever reach the ability to make a Hydrogen Bomb small enough for the missiles they use then hiding wouldn’t be an option. Been said they get nuclear weapons info and some products from China and Russia (surprise). I’m pretty sure they didn’t sell him everything. Want to protect themselves.

We would have only 15 minutes before the missile hits - what would you do in such short time? Almost like the U.S. being on high alert during the Cold War and Cuban Missile Crisis. Really scary stuff. I was pissed and relieved that it was just a false alarm. Pissed because how can anyone screw that up? And relieved because we don't want to live through another Pearl Harbor attack.

This is a wake up call to humanity. Nuclear attacks would cause tremendous catastrophe for the planet. It can also be the of ourselves and those we love, in a matter of seconds.
The one and only way is through open dialog, and a focus on unity. We also have the terrible condition in which our desire for "convenience" is costing the future. I for sure would not want kids of tomorrow to live a radioactive wasteland, simply because of selfishness.
It just doesn't justify. If we are evolved, it's time to show it.

I cannot believe the lack of communication. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO OR WHERE TO GO IF IT HAPPENS WHERE YOU LIVE? Everything happens for a reason and firing this person would serve no purpose. I don't know if it's the network, if it's the fact he legally can't use his old character, or if it's just that Trump's dumb antics call for dumber jokes, but I hope that his show gets more clever and less singleminded after the Trump administration ends.

Maybe y'all heard, the other day, about trump and his 'probably' very good relationship with kim jong un. And that he'd be open to talking to him, something many question the wisdom of, which seems very unfair, shouldn't he be allowed to express his feelings?
Just picture trump one gloomy evening, all alone in his office, Melania cozying up for the night safe in her private bunker. A forlorn look comes over his face, a sigh escapes his plump torso . . . and then he does it! He picks up the phone, he dials, and before kim even has the chance to properly answer, trump is breathlessly declaring :
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you

if they are bashing on hawaii's government for how unprepared they were in these kinds of situations it just goes to show or at least makes you wonder how prepared are the other states or our entire country? because the threat of a nuclear war is slightly a real possibility especially with threats coming from North Korea and Russia. it maybe a joke to people from other states, that a mistake was made that caused widespread panic, but remember it caused a "WIDESPREAD PANIC" so imagine people running around having anxiety and panicking thinking that they were going to DIE that day. i imagine it would not be a pleasant feeling so instead of making fun of the government look at the bigger picture. this mistake shows just everyone else that they should make preparations if there were to be a worst case scenario.

We live with the repercussions of what the American government (whose wealthy businessmen backed by the military, illegally overthrew the Hawaiian government, btw) does in real time. While I personally didn't see the type of panic the nation heard about, there was at least a small window of confusion, fear, helplessness, and despair that took hold before we knew what was going on. When we knew we were safe, I shed a tear, hugged my wife, and we went about our day volunteering at a community taro patch and potlucking with our loved ones. We were happy to be with our 'ohana and the land that feeds us but at no point were we laughing. The stereotypes played out here and on national tv and the recollection of what it felt like on that day saddens me to my core. Much Aloha to you, Stephen. I love your show and how fierce you are in your criticism of the country's supposed leader, but the historical trauma of my people is not a punchline.
