hi the recipe was very awesome i tried it and found it yummy just like the daal which i had tasted at a gujrati mess. many thanks for the recipe and method. got a good dal with no onion garlic and other garam masala powders. :D

You don't need an electric blender at all. Wooden 'mathani' does the job as good as a blender if your dal is properly boiled. Are you trying to say that in olden day, our grandmothers were making dal that was not smooth? For tadka in this dal, always use pure ghee. It will lift the tase to another level. Even tamarind water is used in many homes for that sour punch. Sometimes, on special occasions, fresh, grated coconut is also added.
That is a perfect accompaniment for steamed rice. And a southern India hot veggie curry and appalam ( I am from TN). Thank you chef! And, I am in love with you!:)
