It's been a long time since I studied this, but there are small "airbags" that will "inflate" in the eventuality that air does come into the xylem called tylosis. It is essentially parenchyma that will expand due to the pressure difference and seal off part of the water transport and prevent a total collapse. Some wilting diseases cause these to expand and kills the host.
Hello veritasium- when you was asking the question; "where do the trees get their mass" I determined that the most part of mass is CO2 and H2O, because CO2 and H2O makes glucose molecule.
Yeah, trees aren't really "made of air", the CO2 is just built into glucose using converted light energy, ya know, the definition of photosynthesis... It's a bit misleading to say that plants are made of CO2
@@connorcoyle6592 not just co2 but most of co2 and water because trees contains cellulose and other molecules that's main components are carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.
You should also have to take into account the fact that a tree also has proteins, so yeah, some of the mass of a tree comes from the soil, in other words, the byproducts from other organism’s metabolism.
To be more specific, it's the carbon in the carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide to carbon and oxygen. The carbon gets used to build up most of the tree's mass, and oxygen gets expelled! Yay!
@@nonoctoro4933 And here comes the obligatory foreign dude from his shitty little country that no one talks about here to try to get attention. OK dude, here's some attention.
THere's one step needed to complete the lesson. It's hinted at by at least one reader who noted that we get O2 back from the tree. You said so yourself. What stays behind in the tree, then? THe CARBON. It is then processed by the tree, along with minerals from the soil, (I couldn't guess the mechanism, but it's chemical) for the tree cells to produce NEW tree CELLS. THe tree may also keep some CO2 unprocessed, which adds some weight as well as reserves for when the sun doesn't shine enough to trigger all the reactions. THe other stuff you present in this recycled video amazes me utterly! Great video.
@oldgolfcartspeakers Yeah but he stopped years ago. Look at his videos from 2019, he doesn't interview anyone like he used to (except in this, which is a repost).
I have to say that I think this is my favorite TH-cam video ever! :) Thank you so very much for opening my eyes to seeing trees in an entirely new perspective. I’m going to go hug one tomorrow!
A full grown tree, evaporates about 65 gallons of water a day. It goes into the atmosphere, which creates a "train like" continuation of keeping the clouds from dissipating over land. Take the desert as an example.. The dry air gets rid of clouds (unless there is a torrent of them), or else there is no rain to be had in the desert. We are creating an artificial desert every day by capping the earth with buildings, roads etc. We are also creating 'latent heat' that keeps the atmosphere from cooling and condensing at night. This is why the city and suburbs get less and less rain each year. The opposite is also the reason for rain forests: The plants give off tons of water, and they cool the atmosphere fast at night.
How large of a tree would you need to provide enough oxygen for a single person if they're in a closed system together? Edit: also, would the person put out enough co2 for the tree to survive, or would the growth of the tree consume the carbon and eventually suffocate it?
This is very thoughtful. Another way to look at it : Effectively Trees are trapping energy from the sun into a form that other organisms can consume, thus setting in motion the life cycle. They are like photovoltaic feeder cells for robots (organisms) that run on this battery of energy. From this viewpoint, we are just running from the energy of the sun.
Once during university my prof pointed out that (nearly) all energy either stems from the sun (external; radiation and also tidal energies) or the earth (internal; original impact energies or radioactive decay). Now it feels kinda obvious; I mean where else should it come from? But back then I was amazed by the realization that nearly every energy I get in touch with in my everyday life is caused be the sun. And yes in a sense even living animals, growing plants, meat and fossil fuels. (at least the energies bound in them) A few months later I learned about the early stages of life, the forming of the oceans, our atmosphere and how life grew more complex. I realized that unless we as humans unlock atomic energies (mainly referring to fusion here) life in its essence will always strive for the power of the sun as it is truly the most powerful source of energy around. (excluding more exotic stuff like hawking radiation from black holes here)

Well you’ll probably be dead by then or I will or we all will but I can remember the times I was a kid at 7 years old in 2008 I don’t know why but I loved that feeling nostalgia it makes me wanna cry but really were still in that time just wait until a millennium has passed! At least we won’t have to worry about it!
As long as we're being "nostalgic" about recent things, how about that moment when you wrote this comment? It was a totally different time!
for those of you who didn't notice the tree over 10 meters video was made 7 years ago
Everyone: We're planting trees! Let's save the planet!!
Veritasium: *w h y t r e e s a r e o u t t o g e t y o u *
I like how in the thumbnail, he just smiles. As if he was secretly working for the trees to rule the world.
Probably the trippiest conclusion to an educational TH-cam video that I've seen so far: "You're all turning into Trees" :)
"Potentially the largest collaboration on youtube"
Sounds like orc mischief to me.
The first 10 videos from my subscriber feed were team trees videos
It might actually be
Yeah, I was like "hey, two tree related videos in a row, what a coincidence!" Then came a third, a fourth, a fifth. Then I noticed the hashtag lol
@@connorcoyle6592 not just co2 but most of co2 and water because trees contains cellulose and other molecules that's main components are carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.
same...hehe...and what he means 95% of tree is CO2 means 95% of carbon molecules making up the tree comes from CO2
Dude calm down, no need to get technical, its a part of speech
You should also have to take into account the fact that a tree also has proteins, so yeah, some of the mass of a tree comes from the soil, in other words, the byproducts from other organism’s metabolism.
I actually never thought about that stuff before. Never realized that trees got most of their mass from air.
To be more specific, it's the carbon in the carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide to carbon and oxygen. The carbon gets used to build up most of the tree's mass, and oxygen gets expelled! Yay!
Same here, im kinda mindblown... And the tiny holes in leaves...wtf...those SUCKERS
Vinayachandran A.V and even more specific. The reaction also uses the hydrogen in water to make carbohydrates with the carbon atoms.
@@nonoctoro4933 And here comes the obligatory foreign dude from his shitty little country that no one talks about here to try to get attention. OK dude, here's some attention.
God i hope you are kidding or are very young.
I watched so many of your videos and this is by far the best one. Thank you, I must now go back to slowly becoming a tree.
Why trees are out to get you:
Trees are trying to take the planet back.
Rise of the Planet of the Trees
@@TALKINGtac0 , I was going to say, I feel a crappy disaster movie coming on.
We live on a Plane , not a "planet"..

Damn, I was in suspense the whole video wondering how the title was at all relevant to the content, but I mean... THEY’RE STEALING OUR MASS
Where did you get that mass from, in the first place? :P
"i want to make trees"- Freddie Mercury
"you become the tree." that's wonderful.
Everybody: plant 20 million trees
Me: Derek, why is your hair all of sudden white, r u ok dude?

It is Johan Baptista van Helmont. Not Helmholt like in Helmholtz he was an other awesome dude.
I'm literally going from channel to channel to see who's doing this

Thanks for showing me this! Congrats on 20 MILLION WOHOOO!!!!
My left ear enjoyed the video
I got 3 motifs about things to do with trees (half as interesting, you, and the infographics show)
I got one from ASAP science too

Came here looking for this comment. Will watch both videos (this and HAI) right now. Three videos about trees? Something wrong is not right!
"you are becoming the tree" Damn thats so true
MrBeast: 20 M trees
AmazonFire: Ha!
I'm becoming a tree..??
Thank you so much...
Atleast now i know that i'm useful in some way.
The title and thumb nail of this video is direct proof that your other video about how "Click bait is Unreasonably Effective" is 100% true.
Why did you stop interviewing people? I liked that format.
@oldgolfcartspeakers Yeah but he stopped years ago. Look at his videos from 2019, he doesn't interview anyone like he used to (except in this, which is a repost).

That girl/woman: "magik."
This was so painful to watch knowing the answer to where they get their mass.
maybe u should be "on the outside" doing actual science things and leave this space for people who want to learn.
They get their mass from standing vibrations, like the rest of the 'particles'.
This has always been my favorite video of yours.

I have to say that I think this is my favorite TH-cam video ever! :) Thank you so very much for opening my eyes to seeing trees in an entirely new perspective. I’m going to go hug one tomorrow!
"You're becoming the tree." That's scary.
Yeah, but then we eat vegetables, then they become us. ;)
I'm casually becoming a tree in the closed system of my room.
"A tree is like dirt, but it's not"
MY LIFE IS A LIE
"But its not"
How large of a tree would you need to provide enough oxygen for a single person if they're in a closed system together?
Edit: also, would the person put out enough co2 for the tree to survive, or would the growth of the tree consume the carbon and eventually suffocate it?
Trees are amazing.
I love trees,
Let's plant trees and make this planet a better place to live.
(at least the energies bound in them)
A few months later I learned about the early stages of life, the forming of the oceans, our atmosphere and how life grew more complex. I realized that unless we as humans unlock atomic energies (mainly referring to fusion here) life in its essence will always strive for the power of the sun as it is truly the most powerful source of energy around.
(excluding more exotic stuff like hawking radiation from black holes here)
