Its insane to me that people keep these animals as pets when they see the damage they can do. A girl I went to elementary with and her family were very well known in our area for having exotic animals that no one could get. They had a chimp and brought it to the school gym and had a small assembly when we were in 2nd grade. This wasn't a huge gym either. It doubled as the cafeteria and just had a small stage on one side of the tiled floor room. I think about that all the time they just let this 2nd grade girl and her dad bring in a chimp to a bunch of wild 2nd graders. The chimp wasn't caged just in this girls lap or with her dad. If that chimp had gotten triggered by some crazy kid being a kid it would have been a massacre. Exotic animal laws were wayy too lax back in the day here in oklahoma. Lol.

While it totally could have been the drugs or change of appearance, chimpanzees become incredibly dangerous once they hit puberty. The vast majority of chimpanzee "actors" are young and then shipped off once they hit puberty. The opening scenes showing all those chimps in a cage were ones abandoned once they became dangerous.
This is behavior that happens in the wild also, chimps can be incredibly brutal to other animals and to each other. They should not be pets, actors, anything and I cringe every time I see them in movies or TV. Leave them in the wild where they belong.

    • @neoqwerty

the only apes with anything like an amicable behavior is orangutans (and they shouldn't be kept as pets or entertainment either, it's just that they've shown willingness to help humans even in the wild). Even the intimidating-looking males have a lot of chill for being grown adult males.
(A good cue to know how threatening an animal is is to see how they handle young that aren't their own; if the females don't let the babies near the males there's an obvious reason.)

Xanax rage is very real and can be very scary. You get irrationally angry at the smallest things. With how similar chimps and humans are, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was a Xanax rage. The only things that makes me doubt it is that they say it happened within 5 minutes of giving him the tea, and Xanax doesn't work that fast. Great analysis. To further your point, I've had anger and emotional outbursts from Xanax that you're describing. Correct, taking Xanax cannot produce such a reaction five minutes after taking it. However, from my experience, it was when I was off Xanax or "coming down," when I would feel my worst and prone to rage. Travis may have been somewhere in that realm, coupled with the fact that he's a wild animal, and attacked Charla.
Also, prolonged use of Xanax is terrible. If someone is nervous to board a flight, then Xanax may be perfect for an occasional situation. But taken every day, you'd become suicidal and lose your mind. Case in point.

Even as of a month ago received a restraining order to last one year! So she turned her attention to me and I'm almost 70 and have had two stress heart attacks back in 2014. The judge is young and the young woman is evidently well known so i was denied a hearing to determine if a restraining order is necessary. For two days i was scared to go outside because her boyfriend and her come running with cameras. It's alarming. And i guess she was so convincing to 911, that two police cars and two animal control lined my side of the street. Thankfully my dogs have their shots, tags, and i go beyond and put my phone number on all collars. I also had proof they had been dewormed less than a week ago and i already had the follow up meds ready. The lady police officer said she wished most of the parents took as good care of their children! I felt my face burn! I never get compliments like that. So the next couple days go by and i wanted the report so to have her info about what problem she had with me. But neither department even wrote an incident report about it. I wish they did so i could have proved to the judge that she has turned her attention to me.
I want to say thank you for letting me vent a little. It actually did help i think.

I’m glad this topic is still being addressed. I really don’t understand why people think that any primate can be a pet. They can’t. I studied primatology and worked with primate ecologists and conservationists, and while I’m absolutely no expert, my professors are and they are unified and vocal about the dangers and cruelty of private ownership of any primate species. They aren’t domesticated and never will be. They cannot be surrogate children, they cannot be toilet trained, they can carry diseases harmful to humans (and vice versa) and they certainly cannot thrive in a home.
Many primates live in large, complex, wide ranging groups with strict hierarchies and violence is a way of life. It’s just how they’ve adapted and evolved. It isn’t good or bad, it’s just who they are. Even smaller primates like grivets, capuchins, and squirrel monkeys are fast, powerful, and aggressive. They are all adorable as newborns and babies, but they are ripped from their mothers as early as 3 days old in order to sell while they are still needy infants. The mother, who would normally stay with her children for up to 3-4 years, is then injected with hormones to speed up her reproductive cycle in order to produce another infant to sell. It’s disgusting and cruel, but there are few care requirements for breeders. So even if you justify that you aren’t funding the exotic pet trade, you are perpetuating cycles of misery, which is egregious.
Primates are highly intelligent and need very specific diets and climate. Most are social, but those raised by humans are psychologically damaged and unpredictable. By the time they reach sexual maturity, they aren’t adorable any longer, they become dangerous. They’ll constantly test their “troop” to find their place in it, using aggression to move up the ranks. Children are not safe around them. They engage in behaviors that aren’t acceptable inside a home, like urine washing, poop flinging, destruction of their cages, and destruction and biting of their human owners. This is why you see tons of adorable baby monkeys in videos dressed in diapers and baby clothes, but very rarely any over the age of six or seven. Primates can live for 40-50 years. When the primate bites someone or the stink is too much to bear, that primate is quickly sold to anyone who will pay; the very lucky few go to a decent sanctuary. Most end up sold and resold, turned into breeders, or just locked in a cage with no stimulation or companionship. So much cruelty, and it’s all compounded when you talk about apes.
I just wish people understood that no species of primate can be a suitable pet and that they understand the terrible cruelty and danger they are supporting when they purchase a newborn or a resold teenager/adult. Fortunately, laws are changing and most US states have outlawed private ownership. It’s progress at least. But with social media being ubiquitous these days, more and more people are seeing these adorable newborns and tortured creatures (remember the “tickled” loris?) and impulsively decide to get their own exotic pet. So thank you very much Cid for spreading awareness of such an important topic.

The wild chimps that he descended from should have never been captured. A completely avoidable tragedy. Chimps are their own people, so to say. This is why chimpanzees and other wild animals should NEVER be kept as pets. In an animal sanctuary with people who know what they are doing and who provide proper care, its fine, but Sandra clearly had no clue what she was doing. Wild animals are NOT pets and should not be treated as such! Some people also seem to think that chimpanzees can be treated like little humans, but they dont understand things the same way we do. And they can turn very aggressive and violent, fast. Theres been many cases of people who been attacked, and some have been fatal.
