    100% agree with you! There are still people out there that think the fishing is good and that it's not the fisherman causing the downward trend when in fact it is! I used to do a lot of spring striper fishing on the Egg Harbor River and Mullica river in southern NJ because big striper would swim up the rivers to spawn. For the better part of the last 8 years there are not fish bigger than 6lbs running in the rivers anymore. The problem like you said is too many fisherman keeping too many fish with NO respect for the fishery! I know guys who go out fishing EVERY DAY and limit out on stripers, big ones too! I understand the law says that they can do that but just because it's law doesn't mean its not wrong! I can think of several guys I know who ALWAYS keep 40"+ fish and NEVER release a fish that big! No respect anymore. There needs to be a slot limit up and down the east coast. Period. Awesome video

      Same goes for the delaware river. It pains me to see friends of mine fishing hard during prime season and catching nothing, thinking "tonights the night", every night, and it just doesnt happen. There are still big fish caught in the river but the pattern is, fewer parts of the river, fewer fish. Half this fishery is guys chasing memories from 5-10 years ago

    I fish the Chesapeake Bay and we aren’t seeing the breeding size fish this season at all coming in. It’s multifaceted but I think a slot maybe 28-34” would really help. Also, every fisherman I know has seen horrible poaching and the penalties need to be much harsher. I fish a lot at night at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (north bay) and I see it constantly. Earlier this season I was going under the bridge and my props got caught on a f**** gillnet that was inbetween two pylons. Two individuals who claimed not to speak English tried to tell me they were commercial fisherman. I called DNR and they were arrested with over 100 illegal fish. Cost me nearly a grand to fix the outboards and a week off the water, but I’ll pay it again to keep these types off the water!

      We have a stock of resident fish and over the summer the size limit is 20” which I do keep a few of each year. I’ve always argued that since we have this off-season stock of fish, a small slot on seasonal fish is perfectly fair. It seems the charter guys who make there money during trophy seasons, are against it which I understand. I wonder if there is a way to educate their customers that a 35lb striper isn’t the best eating!

      Yes there should be slot fishing for most fish, slot limits allow for bigger fish to live and smaller ones to grow but most often target fast growing fish and don't always allow for proper reproduction to happen. To often fish are targeted during their vulnerable times prior to during and immediately after sparing runs. They are then over fished. With a at slot limit and size restriction along with proper creel limits. Fish have a chance to reproduce and provide the recreation activities we all want to enjoy! it is more then just slot limit still need to reduce creel size.

    Feel your pain on the state of the striper fishery spots that I use to fish in eastern long island sound are so bad that that the last few years I have given up fishing them as the bass have disappeared less and less fish each year the pressure on the fishery is crushing this last fall u could count 300 boats on a week day fishing off fire island this fall the rips in Montauk are a parking lot some moon nights its gonna get worse before it gets any better like you I have moved on to other fish sad to say😪

    Good rant. Sometimes you have to tell it like it is. When I was a kid we had the Rockfish moratorium on the Chesapeake. Probably saved the species but lots of ppl hollered. Don’t know if we need that now but we need something. Maybe a 1 fish limit and a 22-26” slot. Something.

    • @jeffsmith8958
      @jeffsmith8958 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m with you but I think it’s seasonal here in the bay as we also have resident fish. I think a 28-32” slot during trophy season would realllly help. During the summer I like they’ve raised it from 18” to 20” recently.

    I fish out of sandy hook, and every year we could go out in the bay on our boat and catch all the stripers we wanted on topwater. This fall very few fish came in the bay, they were all down the beach and the fishing wasn’t always consistent, plus the weather was never good

  • @michaelsimko7694
    @michaelsimko7694 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Myself and buddies were very disappointed with the bluefish this year into October. This marked the first time I have never caught a typical CT tailor blue. I only caught 1 bluefish around 3 pounds in July and all the fall run fish were under 2 pounds. There was a massive amount of huge bunker in a local harbor during late summer, but hardly any bigger blues and stripers ever came in on them. I was getting reports that the bigger 8+ pound bluefish stayed offshore during the typical late August to mid October period.
    There was a 3 week period in the same area from late October into early November when stripers would move in along the beach, but they were all mostly small to medium sized schoolies just like 2017, except for the action not being as good and time period not being as long this year.
    Other than fish numbers, an issue I saw this year was how the weather impacted the water temperature. Labor Day weekend the closest buoy read 82 degrees. After a series of brutal summer days from late July into early September, we started seeing extended periods of colder than normal temperatures with occasional streaks of hot weather, which made the water temperatures drop quickly. Mid November was when the same buoy read 52 degrees before quickly dropping to 47 within 24 hours after getting hit with 5.8" of snow. Thanksgiving was very, very cold. The local weather station broke a record for coldest fall season temperature, which was 13.

    Stripers have been in decline for over 25 years. But funny thing this where are stripers being sold? I have never see wild stripped bass for sale in the fish markets? at least not in NYC or NJ. I only see they hybird stripers (farm raised) being sold at fish markets? So where are the commerical fishing boat selling them to?

    • @703fishing3
      @703fishing3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're here at every supermarket and fish market in Northern Va and the rest of the DC area. The stripers are way to expensive to even buy about $28-$35 per pound at wegmans and harris teeter ect. At fish markets its much cheaper but I can guarantee you you won't have a problem finding wild caught striped bass for sale anywhere in the dmv area. I was at the store yesterday and they had whole stripers and they weren't hybrids, didn't buy it of course because its way too expensive.

      Ill be the first to tell you that I dont know. I dont have the data to know. What I do know is there are plenty of bass outside the 3 mile line. I do know that surf fishing up and down from mass to VA is worse now than it was (actual surf fishing not canal fishing). I remember reading about a 2 day mega blitz in the OBX SURF in like 2009 where big fish pushed bunker to shore and guys slayed 15-30 or40lb fish off the beaches... now the boats dont even catch in the obx. I know the fish that run the rivers to spawn (at least the delaware and tribs of the chesapeake) are fewer than Ive seen since Ive started fishing. Further north like boston - nova scotia there does seem to be more fish than there was but I dont fish up there so I really cant say how accurate that is. Generally I believe theres less fish. perhaps they are just staying offshore most of their lives now. Offshore Virginia is still a powerhouse for big fish 10-20 miles out or more in the winter.

      I've heard from surf guys that NJ was especially tough this season. TH-camrs, online forums, co-workers that fish NJ beaches, all say the same about this seasons bass...or lack of. I saw smaller bass all season from shore but the boat guys did well here in RI. The boat guys did especially well at Block. I didn't hear much about the surf guys on Block however. Just hoping things recover to times of a two day blitz that we can hit from shore here in the northeast. Actually I would just like to catch a few mid 30"ers now and then rather than once a year. Thanks for your response man. As long as you don't start fishing for micros 100% of the time, I for one will always watch. It's always cool to see what necessity you left home each video!

    Very tough fall here also. Poachers are also decimating this fishery. I read recently of 3 joses that were caught fishing 35 bridge in point pleasant having over 60 undersized bass in one night. I wonder how many nights this happened before these assbags were finally caught. Couple that with the commercial guys who caught162,000lbs of illegally harvested fish in north Carolina in recent years plus every full party boat daily in every coastal state these fish swim it's no surprise the state of the bass. And let's not forget about the Cape cod canal slaughter fest all summer long. We might lose this fish.

I’ve seen so many dead 17”strippers that were gut hooked or a fish gets a hook in the Gill that’s obviously going to bleed out get tossed back. They should just keep it and count it towards the limit

    Striped bass fishing this year in Rhode Island wasn't good, I fished with a lot of other people on the beaches and saw almost no keepers caught. I am not a commercial fisherman but surfcasters here in Rhode Island said that there is a lot of trawlers up here and that is why the fishing is so bad now. Maybe the striped bass get caught in their nets and die. Perhaps a commercial fisherman can chime in. I think that the commercial fishing of bunker hurts the striper population as well. Perhaps there is poaching from non-U.S. boats as well. That wouldn't surprise me.

    the first fish was a small mouth buffalo. They are ALWAYS EXTREMELY SLIMY. I catch them a lot. It is actually serious, do NOT handle them. I would not release them either.

      I fish for carp in ILlinois river. Using corn and packbait. They are extremely abundant everywhere they exist, but people dont see them because they are difficult to catch with that downward mouth. U have to bottom fish with small hooks to get them. Worms is even better, but u need packbait so they find your hookbait. I despise them and cut the gills before releasing. And i LOVE carp.

    Mate, same the world over, whatever the local run of shore fish is its been smashed. Fish that used to be the average size now get you on the cover of the angling mags. 7 billion people want feeding so probably going to be worse next year.

    There hasn't been even a hint of keeper bass anywhere in DE and MD coasts. It has been absolute garbage and apparently the only fish are showing up now but they're all at the 3 mile line practically and barely 32 inches. No decent fish anywhere to be found. Every keeper seems to be taken no matter what. Limiting out on striped bass doesn't exist anymore. Most would agree that there needs to be a slot of 28-36 inches and that's it. Maybe even a smaller gap there is no need for a bigger fish than that. A 28" fish can feed an entire family and then some there is no need to keep a 45"+ striper.

    Sport fishing for striped bass will have an impact. But that impact is nominal when compared to the tonnage the commercial netting industry takes. Whomever it is exploiting the resource they know it too. It comes down to when do you protect the people from themselves. Resource management is now the best option. Kind of sad really.
