As much as I detested Rise of Skywalker I can truly say that there was one moment in that movie which really took my breath away... It was Luke telling the story of how he trained Leia. Seeing the young Skywalker twins in that flashback really hit me hard as I made this realization that never before that moment happened had I needed to see that moment. But now I needed that moment.
One of my favorite episodes across the entire Outlaw Nation channel. Very nuanced conversation about Star Wars. Awesome to see people talk about what they love about Star Wars and have a healthy conversation about what doesn’t work for them as much. Like many, not everything over the last decade has worked for me, but I’m beyond happy the story I love so much was able to continue and introduce a lot of new beloved characters and stories. On another note, it’s clear John has surrounded himself with kind and very thoughtful people, it pops up in every show. May the Force be with you all!
Even with the frustrations -- and The Rise of Skywalker -- the Disney era of Star Wars has been far better than the nastiness and bitterness would have people believe. Some of my absolute highlights of the franchise -- The Last Jedi, Solo, Rebels, The High Republic, Andor, Ahsoka, Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor -- have occurred since the purchase. They've had a number of unforced errors, but they are also under extraordinary, and frankly unfair, scrutiny. I'm grateful they are finally doing their development in quiet and under cover. I look forward to what comes next.
@@Playhouse76 I feel weird, it I agree. I’m not a fan of the ST, but I kinda like or love a lot/most of it. I even like Solo and The Acolyte (yes s7 TCW blows most everything else out of the water for me along with Mando; still need to watch Andor), but I’ve liked the vast majority of their offerings and I even liked most of the character in ST even if wasn’t a fan of the direction or storylines.
Having not invested too heavily in the literary Expanded Universe when Disney acquired Lucas Film, I was not bothered by the 'Cannon' issue. As we have seen, they have been more then willing to bend and make excuses when certain producers wish to change that canon for the sake of their own stories. Be that as it may, there are many things I do find to love in this current era of Star Wars, first and foremost is SW Rebels. I loved watching Rebels as it reignited my Star Wars fandom, which had lain fallow since the Prequels. Season 7 of the Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, Visions, Tails of the Jedi/Empire, are all series that I have enjoyed immensely. But Andor, coupled with Rogue One, is the pinnacle for me as far as great Star Wars story telling in the Disney Era.
Which is why it’s ridiculous when people are like, “sTaR wArS iS dEaD!!1”. I get that some of the stuff haven’t been good or even great (in all honesty, being that I watched it 2 years removed from all the teeth gnashing, I’ve enjoyed almost all of it).
John , when you said getting comic books at the racks at 7-Eleven I screamed with excitement because that's where I got my comics from growing up. I lived in a rural town in Virginia so there were no comic book stores nearby so 7-Eleven was all I knew. 😃🙂
I like Star Wars Bloodlines the Claudia Gray alot. As well as Lost Stars. Really love Andor and the Siege of Mandalore from TCW. And my favourite movies are Rogue One and Last Jedi. RE The Acolyte, I;d love to see Plageuis training Qimir but for Qimir to ultimately fail and be killed by Tenebraus.
I know, I know a s2 is dead, but I was imagining and hoping to see Qimir and Osha secretly training, but one or both being ultimately destroyed by Plagueis/Tenebrous.
I understand Laura's hesitation with adapting the books, but I really think LFL should consider doing animated adaptations of the books and comics. DC made a whole cottage industry out of adapting comics in animated movie form. Disney and Lucasfilm could easily do the same. Hell, they could even do animated adaptations of EU/Legends stories.
And I agree with Vogel. No shock. F*ck the audience. Respect their investment, care, and appreciation. But ultimately, tell a story and stop trying to chase the audience. We will come with you if you focus on stories with vision and a commitment to telling the best story you can.
I, for one, love the idea of Dr. Aphra. Indiana Jones in space. Facing off against Darth Vader and two very killer droids and she LIVES! I, for one, would love to see her as either the main character or a recurring side character in a series. Maybe she is in an upcoming series as at least a mention. 😊
What Michael said about what is SW w/o Palps, the Skywalkers, etc, and I would point to the Legends era comics, novels, etc for inspiration. Sure, we had the Zahn novels which centered around the central characters of the OT, but there was tons which has nothing to do with them either.
My biggest complaint about the Star Wars universe is touching the same timeline or the past. Like I'm not going to be invested in something or someone that I know has no future. I would love for them to just jump 30 years or 3,000 years into the future. Follow a new character and let's see where that goes. Tell a story of some young character first connecting to the force, and what that journey looks like how do they use the force, do they lean into the dark side when they are mad, do they help people or hurt people without any Jedi or Sith influence. And then build a world from there, connect them to the larger universe, and maybe we don't know what side that character would choose if given an opportunity.
I think overall it’s been really good. The books, comics, and games have mostly all been solid to great. It’s just the live action films and shows that have missed at times.
As a branding consultant, the brand ‘Identity / DNA’ conversations is spot on. Lucas Film leadership seems to have been at odds with the Identity / DNA of what Star Was is vs what they would like it to be, since the Disney acquisition. Family Drama, Deep Spirituality, Male Wish Fulfillment, Timeless Storytelling vs Timely Storytelling, Clear Narrative Morality are all massive pillars of the 40yr legacy that was purchased by Disney but not wholeheartedly embraced in the post-acquistion storytelling. Jeep focusing on sports cars, Barbie focusing on a spy / espionage line of dolls, Nike focusing on dress wear vs sports wear, would all result in angry fans/consumers. Each of these brands have expand in bold and exciting ways, but none of them did so at the expense of their core audience and original DNA. That said though, great convo, you guys + keep up the great work!-
Unfortunately there are many technical glitches and problems with the AI of Star Wars outlaws that once that is fixed and the game is actually complete I might check it out.
They could go back in timeline to the era of Star Wars: The Old Republic (not KOTOR). If you guys haven’t seen the cut scenes from that, highly recommended and the actual stories would be blank slates.
I think hope, struggling between the light and dark, and the underdog fighting the good fight is the through-line. Just stop putting in so many shiny things, the more lived-in look always seems to work better.
As much as I think there are massive problems with Star Wars, I also don't agree with the style they are going for and most likely Kathleen is a big part of it. But I do thank her, and the creatives who brought me Force Awakens, Rogue One, Jedi: Game Series, Andor, and the flipping Mandalorian. These were perfect events for me. Peak of entertainment. Ahsoka had a lot going for it, but kind of crapped out in the end. Solo was a fun little story imo. But Obi-Wan, Booba, Acolyte and Last Jedi made me feel really bad. Like I had an ulcer and simultaneously was fueled with anger. Except the final episodes of Boobs, those were awesome.
Clone Wars series Rebels Rogue One Are my favorites My dislikes Recent inconsistency since Mickey Mouse took over Star Wars The Dark side of Force with the fandom
But... 2 of those and the 7th season of TCW came /after/ Disney acquired SW. RO and Rebels are completely post Disney acquisition. How do you feel about Mando and Andor, if you don’t mind my asking?
I think now that we have established the non-hater fans who have been disappointed recently we can stop calling the hateful crazies a “subsect of fandom”
I said this elsewhere in response to a comment, but looking back, I’ve actually liked a lot of the Disney era SW. I am decidedly not a fan of the ST and the “taint” has kinda retroactively dampened my like of TFA (this is neither an invitation to debate me on the merits of the ST nor to poopoo people who do enjoy them). But, from Rogue One to Solo (yes, Solo) to even The Acolyte, I haven’t actively disliked any of them. I will say I think it might have something to do with having only been able to watch the tv series stuff about 2 years after they dropped - except for TA - mostly when the vitriol and the gnashing of the teeth had subsided and, looking back, the level of anger and rage seem almost silly and childish in its level (and that coming from someone who basically has nothing good to say of the ST except maybe TFA). I’m finally nearly caught up. I still have some Tales of the Jedo/Sith to go, a couple episodes of s3 Mando and Andor to go. And I don’t see myself hating any of those.
I am a fan of: original trilogy, prequels ( a good story with flawed execution), rogue one, andor, bad batch (underated), clone wars and rebels and Mando season one and two. BOBF and Mando 3 were fun but suffered from inconsistency and were clearly trying to tie up plotlines from the canceled rangers of the new republic. Not a fan of: the sequel trilogy's failure to properly resolve the storylines of Luke Han Leia and Chewbacca, not a single scene with them all together, Leia ignoring Chewbacca after Han's death and hugging Rey who she has never met. Luke's treatment in the disney canon: he is mostly ignored, not even a name drop in ahsoka, shown in an unflattering light in TLJ with no context as to how he got there. I noticed that when you three were reviewing Acolyte, that Laura a fan of Vernestra from the high republic novels clearly had a problem with how Vernestra was portrayed in the Acolyte, it seemed like they were setting her up to be a sith or secret dark sider, with no context as to how she got to that place. This is how Luke fans felt when we saw TLJ.
There is a weird problem with Star Wars to me, nowadays, which is that the Filoniverse (which I think will be the future efforts) doesn't interact at all with the Rogue One/Andor -verse, and vice versa. It feels like it's two different universes. I'm curious how much Skeleton Crew will fit into the Filoniverse.
Uuuuhhhh…. I’m confused, you do understand that there’s a REALLY GOOD reason for that. Cassian Andor & et al have been dead for more than 30yrs by the time we meet Mando… They are on opposite ends of the OT in the timeline. They can’t interact. At most we will see/get some mention of the Ghost crew when they assist Mothma’s escape from Coruscant & her declaration of the Rebel Alliance post the Gorman massacre. Am I misunderstanding what your trying to say or was this not clear for you ? If not clear, hopefully this helps ? As for Skeleton Crew, Vane (the lead Salad Pirate minion) who we met in Mando S3 is in the show, so there’s that at a min.
@dkarras The Rebels characters are there in the period of Andor. Of course, Andor will not be in The Mandalorian, but other Filoni characters could pop up in Andor. The only case is Saw Guerrera, I guess. Oh, Chopper does show up in Rogue One, and General Syndula is mentioned. So, maybe it's just a wrong impression I have. But I do have the impression that these "worlds" do not exchange much...
My highlights are Rogue one , Andor, tales of the jedi, Clone wars season 7, the bad batch, rebels, and Ahsoka. Oh and Mando of course. Down sides are the rest. The high republic is simply boring. I just couldn't get into it. I tried to read the first novel but it was dire. Akso the star wars novels of this era are relatively poor. Everyone talks about bloodlines. Totally overated. It was ok but not a blockbuster inmho. For me, the sequels are the biggest issue. We either need to retcon them or forget about them. Like highlander 2.
If John and Vogel make a vid I'm prob gonna watch it. Not really a big Star Wars fan. I like Jedi, Sith, those bounty hunters, and light saber/force power fights. The politics, planets, and species don't matter to me at all. I think Vader is OVERRATED. The prequels SAVE that character. He is cool looking and he has some great lines (maybe its because JAMES EARL FRIGGIN JONES is saying them) but his on screen bada$$ery is lacking.
Same with Obi-wan, though. It was the limitations of that time and the people they had. The “badassery” kicked in in other media as well as tv and RO once they had the sfx and choreographers who could stage the fights.
Overall a Failure. This is shown that there still is not a single major project or heck any Project that advances the Timeline beyond the ST. Not a Movie, Disney Plus Show, Videogame, Comic Book, or Book. Kathleen has shat the bed. And finally is circling back around to looesly adapting the Books (that she claimed didn't exist as source material when she took over and ended the EU) with the Thrawn Movie. The High Republic also might have died with Acolyte. Special Note, As a Black Fan, I am tired of what seems to be the less competent Black Male Sidekick who has to be shown up by a girl. Props to Ewan Mcgregor for stepping up to defend Moses Ingram.
Vogel on the Jedi Way - a surprise to be sure but a welcome one. I love crossovers..
He, too, hates sand. It’s coarse and rough and gets everywhere. But, he goes to Tatooine, er, Burning Man every year all the same.
Um okay 😂
Love it whenever Michael is on any of the show🔥🔥🔥, yall should have him come through more I love his comedy and his perspective on everything ❤
