Captain Smith on the Olympic, New York (1911)

  • Captain EJ Smith, in summer uniform, on the starboard wing bridge of the R.M.S. Olympic in 1911. The name on the bulkhead has been later inked out frame by frame to suggest it was filmed on Titanic. Smith is noticeably uncomfortable about being filmed and wanders around nervously, smiling at the camera at the end.
    Also a medium close up of Captain Smith with the bridge and wheel house behind him and to his left is a pedestal for a pelorus, a dial with a sighting device on top enables one to sight an object and determine what angle it is to the bow of the ship.

    As captain he takes full responsibility for that iceberg hitting titanic no matter what. Basically he made a balls of his final voyage. He didn’t manage the ice warnings properly and ordered too much speed that fateful night through icy fields.

    • @TitanicsOfficers
      @TitanicsOfficers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      While he indeed takes ultimate responsibility for the loss of the ship and those aboard it (which is why he went down with the ship) I disagree that he "made a balls of his final voyage." Other captains of his time agreed during the inquiries that they would have done the same thing in regards to speed and ice warnings etc. It was common practice and his actions did not directly lead to disaster, they were one of many factors that conspired against the ship - such as the weather conditions, the nature of the collision, and the design of the ship.

    • @knownpleasures
      @knownpleasures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TitanicsOfficers he did make a balls of it as it hit an iceberg, sank and killed 1507 people, that’s unprecedented mass manslaughter. Also the captain of the Californian spotted the ice fields and stopped for the night, quite different to Smith who not only didn’t stop he kept on at the same speed .

    • @TitanicsOfficers
      @TitanicsOfficers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@knownpleasures No he did not "kill" 1507 people - actually 1496 people perished, while 712 people survived (these are the updated, confirmed numbers). It most certainly was not "mass manslaughter" - he was investigated by two official inquiries in the States and in England and neither came to that exaggerated conclusion. Instead the more balanced conclusion: "He [Captain Smith] made a mistake, a very grievous mistake, but one in which, in the face of practice and of past experience, negligence cannot be said to have had any part; and in the absence of negligence it is, in my opinion, impossible to fix Captain Smith with blame." - British Inquiry, Lord Mersey
      Ironical that you mention Captain Lord of the Californian - the ship that did not respond to Titanic's distress calls - as a means of comparison! Of course, the Californian had stopped - they met an icefield and could not continue. The Titanic did exactly the same, stopping their engines on encountering ice. Rostron of the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the 712 survivors, also sped through the same icefield, risking his vessel and all those aboard. But he was treated a hero....
      I don't believe that Smith was a particularly competent Captain but neither was he the villain you so desperately want to paint him. Speed under the circumstances was considered necessary at the time - it was believed to aid maneuverability. Smith had taken note of the ice warnings and the officers of the watch expected to reach ice by 11pm and prepared the ship for that.
      It is very easy to point the finger of blame when that person is no longer alive to defend themselves. I hope you are not judged with the same harshness you wish to judge others.

    • @knownpleasures
      @knownpleasures 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TitanicsOfficers Smith WAS considered a competent captain which is why he was chosen to captain the most expensive liner in its day, that’s the sad part. He had 40 years experience as a seaman, was 62 years old in 1912 and was due to retire. Oh by the way the Carpathia only sped through the ice fields to save the day , otherwise over 700 other souls would have passed away. A tragic but fascinating tale .

    • @lassesuurmunne8340
      @lassesuurmunne8340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He tried to sail further south to hopefully actually avoid the bergs. Once they were around the ice, it was calm at sea. The lookouts were probably fooled by what’s called a cold air mirage which hid the iceberg from view until it was closer and too late to avoid. I can’t blame the captain. Many factors came together to result in the disaster

    "Able-Bodied Seaman"-the one and only QUIZ Answer to a Question no longer remembered, nor any of the rest of that Quiz's Questions & Answers given out to all the 6 Graders in MISS JUDY FORTUNATO's READING CLASS at STARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, on Lovers Lane, Steubenville, Ohio, during the late winter 'Semester" (or early spring?) in the 1969-1970 school year. As 6th grader, ALBERT got a miserable D on that Quiz, and of all the Questions-that 'answered' One was certainly the most incorrectly "Answered" (and He doesn't even remember what INCORRECT Answer He had written down on that- by now-long vanished Quiz Sheet!)....But the real oxymoronic irony, is that after all these years, THE ONLY THING REMEMBERED is that very phrase "ABLE-BODIED SEAMAN that was the most UNKNOWABLE for Him to answer in Grade 6!"! Everything else is unrecoverable to Memory's Lane: neither the Story, not the rest of that Quiz and all those remaining Questions and Answers! So does CAPTAIN SMITH of the TITANIC, along with ENSIGN GARROVICK of OBSESSION (ART WALLACE's story& screen Dialogue for episode13 of Star Trek the original series), after having VISIONwise "Paranormally' Paralleled each other way back in Mysterious Time, in the 'One Step Beyond" hall of records, have BOTH become 'official' Keepers of that lost Quiz?
