Hand sewn one is definitely the better looking one. They are both beautifully done, but hand sewn is still the better choice.

If you started cutting on the outer edge of the hexagons instead of the center first you could reuse those hexagon shapes your cutting out it would be less waste and you could create small ornaments for maybe Christmas or new years.

This is a great idea and to add to it, you could "fussy cut" the hexies in pairs (ducks, kittens, apples) and use the cut out pieces as little doors. Put a pull tab on each and you've got a cute game of Concentration. Littlies would love it! (Just standing on the shoulders of giants, here 😊 ). I love this pattern, HandyMum. Very clever. xo

For that perhaps the first cut will have to be by fine blade than a thick scissor. Only then the entire hexi will come out intact.

Instead of gluing the hexies, you could iron them onto iron-on interfacing. If you are careful not to iron the area without hexies, then you can iron that area to your top. That would save having to baste around the edges.
The top could be nonraveling fabric, like the felt in this project. But you could use other fabrics by using a stitch that somewhat secures the raw edges, like a blanket stitch. Or just let the traveling be part of the design.
As for making a hexagon, just google one, copy, & enlarge or decrease to your desired size.
