Found my first helmet in a garbage can when I was 7 years old. It is a WW1 US doughboy helmet which is camouflage painted with the 86 th Division insignia painted on it. I am 67 now and still have it along with a few others!
Mike B, love the channel after finding it a couple weeks back. Sportsman’s Guide was a great place to blow chore money for me as a kid as well. Good times. Thanks for the helmet vid as it reminded me of my ACH that slowed down a bullet enough that I didn’t have the top of my head pushed through my mouth when I was shot in Baghdad in 2008. Blew those “impact sensors” that they installed in theater into pieces and put a dent in my skull but all in all, worked well. Keep up the great content. Steadfast and Loyal...
I had a beat up sportsman guide I would always look at and take to school ( High school ) around 1995. I always oogled over the reproduction SS and Wehrmacht, camouflage smocks. I think they were around a hundred bucks and that was just unobtainable for a 13 - 14 year old.
"Nice... get a muffler..." looks over at my AR15.... "Ok!" Seriously thought, I agree. Thanks for the great video, and glad to hear that you are feeling better!
I collect whole sets of kit, like a complete us Army uniform from the war on Afghanistan period, or a British one, etc and usually boots, vests and helmets are the most expensive while belts and undershirts are the hardest to find at least the proper ones
Ordered a couple Yugo helmets from you a couple weeks ago. I got the ones listed in poor condition and with some hot soapy water, WD -40, and bit of elbow grease, they're looking awesome!!! Definitely agree though, helmets are probably one of the most interesting surplus items, other than firearms.
I am one of those people who started buying surplus firearms late. A year ago I got a mint condition mosin nagant m44 dated 1948 that all matching. I paid $400 for it including shipping, ffl, and taxes. Early this spring I got a yugo sks all matching dated 1968 with a California muzzle break, and I paid $465 for it including all expenses too. I did pay a lot for them, but in late 2020 both firearms gained some more value. Although I haven’t been able to get ammo for my sks, and I haven’t shot it yet.
Although I don't collect helmets for financial reasons, I too would like to do so on a bigger scale. My interest started after I wore two types as service helmets, a PASGT and an M92 later. Got to try out a Revision one too a few years ago. Medieval protective headgear is also a massive interest of mine... also quite an expensive hobby as the keyword is "bespoke" - as a lot of stuff on the market is atrociously badly made. It's really interesting to see practical development of those things depending on the weapons they're meant to protect from.
Hi Mike great video. Collecting helmets just like collecting arms or medals for example is like getting a piece of History. That's how I see things. Personally, I'm a 1914-1945 buff both from a Historical and a military Historical view points. Like you I collect mainly helmets, medals. But also books, photographs and insignias of the same period. Keep the great work Mike and cheers from France!
Started out the same way, ordered my first helmet from the sportsmans guide catalog, an East German helmet. Me and my friend spent endless hours playing war back in the day. My collection now has grown extensively since I first started collecting. Such a fun hobby
My great grandmother lived in Oderzo when the Austro-Hungarians invaded. After they were pushed out, they found a bunch of equiptment lying around on their farm. I'm pretty sure the helmets are still in the family, but they had to give up the guns.
when I was young I convinced my mom to bring me to a military surplus store bought some bought some milled out grenades and brought em to school in kindergarten and showed my classmates and one of them pulled one out of his book bag. Little did I know we'd be best friends to this day
I’ve been a collector since I’m 16 now I’m almost 20 in a few months, I’ve had a few helmets come and go but one I’ve kept for ever is my Brodie helmet from ww1, I’ve had Soviet and german helmets and bayonets I’ve sold for profit, now I’ve finally got a Skat 2dt for 350 dollars another lifelong piece of kit I love learning about the history behind them.
Those childhood discoveries are great, and as I also had a Father in the Armed Services there were bits and pieces of uniform and webbing etc around. My first discovery was an Airforce practice bomb down the side of my Grandparents' garage. Love your content, which is pretty unique. Just realized I wasn't subscribed so I fixed that. Sadly my partner counts the helmets on a regular basis to check up on me,and I'm really hoping to sneak in a couple of Swiss helmets!
Why do M1 helmets look different on soldiers and Marines in pics from Vietnam than they did in WWII? It seems like they sit different on the head. Is the shape different? The webbing?
I often say that my milsurp collection started with my K98, but I always have to look back on my Front Seam M1 helmet (which I still use in reenactment today) as the real item that started it all!
I bought a WW2 Luftwaffe helmet at a military show back around 1983 for $60. It is in very good condition and has a nice liner. It is missing the chin strap, though...Anyway, it was certainly a good investment. I was 9 years old at the time, and I have also collected helmets since I was very young. I just think they are super cool. Thanks Mike.
My first "helmet" was a toy M1 when I was a kid. I'm don't really consider myself a collector but I have a surplus Argentine Army version of the M1, a Soviet SSh-40 and an East German helmet. And in a country where firearms are strongly regulated I'd say it's a pretty good alternative for collecting historical military stuff.
Ive been collecting for 1 year now I had no idea where to start. But now I enjoyed helmets, mess kits, shirts and gas mask bags from country's across the world 👍
italy actually has a helmet afterthe sept2 series but it cant be found on any market beacause it is strictly prohibited to sell current issue equipment
personally it's more the technical point of view that i like about helmets (the way the liners, chin-straps and shell are designed, the different things some countries tryed, etc...)
Mind you by the 50's they were still some dump cliffs were you could see a 20m high stack of german helmets (i got firsthand testimonial) but no one cared and now they are all gone...
Last night was Guy Fawkes!,bloody mini TET!.....nice sky!,but,I'm not going outdoors with out same, same,Mitchell cover, been lucky so far, takes bout an hour to get used to weight Mann!,dems heavy.... Stay Lucky. P.S. My helmet is cool as.......cartman badge, front centre, Screw you guys,I'm going home!..
Literally the only helmet I own is an East German helmet that I don’t know shit about, though it has a circular shaped sticker of an East German flag on the front of it.
I’m pretty sure East Germany took the M56 (I’m assuming your helmet) design from an older German design from WW2. The NVA used the M56 from the mid/late 50s until the NVA dissolved in 1990. There was subtle changes throughout its use. I’ve seen photos of M56 being used by North Vietnamese troops on the Ho Chi Minh trail during the Vietnam War. I’ve also seen photos of them being used in Bosnian in early and mid 1990s. I’m trying to buy one.
Pretty much the same reasons that people collect bayonets. I would say that bayonets are the next best thing to firearms but helmets would right after that
No. I hate online troll culture, and I unfortunately fed in to it by making those few videos. It's not my style, and it's not coming back. If that's what you're in to, my content probably isn't for you...
Your earlier videos actually got me into the hobby of collecting helmets and now I'm 6 helmets into the rabbit hole!

Wish I could’ve found a helmet especially a ww1 helmet just lying in the trash

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine in 4th ID in A-stan in 2009. Glad you're still here.

I know your struggle, try finding undergarments and shoes for old Soviet uniforms from the 1950s

The reason I'm into collecting helmets is your old video, I hope this convinces more people go start as well.

Sportsman's guide catalog in the 90's, like the sears catalog in the day.
I got into a competition over who owns the most and coolest helmets with a friend back in middle school and still am now.
You speak to me from the soul. Warm greetings from Germany. Keep it up.👍
The muffler comment, the backstory, the passion. This is why I watch this channel. Glad you’re recovering from the illnesses and procedures you had.
Thanks much!

My first helmet was an M1 shell Vietnam era for $20 when I was 12. Currently collecting yugo helmets or eastern bloc helmets.
I got my first helmet a few years back it’s a Vietnam m1 I paid 10 bucks for the liner and 20 for the shell I love that thing
What's your favorite eastern bloc helmet ?

Mike B yo magnificent bastard, I´ve bought your helmets!!!
Reminds me of how my grandfather bought a bunch of German stuff in 1946 for very cheap prices.
Mind you by the 50's they were still some dump cliffs were you could see a 20m high stack of german helmets (i got firsthand testimonial) but no one cared and now they are all gone...
Helmets are cool items to collect. My favorite one is a West German police stahlhelm style riot helmet.
2 M1's ,but a K-pot would be nice for recent events. Saving$$up.
You are gonna fook up the surplus helmet market too.
My fist helmet was a British tank crew helmet Nato 1964 had his rank Sargent Driver

What I like about helmets is they were issued to protect someone's life.

Corona got me lonely amiright
I'll askMosin Crate what he thinks.
