I watched this lesson because I was not getting pretty colors, especially greens. I have a color wheel but am making some charts from your examples. This should be a must for every new painter. It has really helped me.

Great job! I finally came a cross a book many years ago that explained color bias in pigments. It's amazing how many books on color mixing never mention this very essential fact. One idea that might make your explanation easier to under stand is to point out that when 2 colors are mixed and one of both have complements in the mix the resulting color is muddier than may be intended. Ex.: Ultra Marine blue (red blue) & Cad. Red light. (orange red) That orange is the complement of blue and is what kills the color mixture right off.
Thank you for all your great videos!

I feel embarrassed because I had every yellow except lemon yellow and hanza yellow, so had to order and got Sennelier's lemon yellow Hansa , plus I had yellow oxide instead of yellow ochre, so I also ordered that in Sennelier...( your Amazon page was out of them so I got them at Jerry's!) So when they come in I will paint over the wrong colors in yellow! Even so, I don't think I have ever had a class so well informative...especially on the bias of yellow and green! You taught me things I never even thought about before but now I know and will follow my color wheel to the max. I also did the class on tints, tones and shades which was equally as important as this one! Color is so important to me and I am determined to do this! A million thank you's Cinnamon because you care!

Thank you for sharing this video. I am a new artist (acrylic painting). I've been painting in pastel for 4 years and thought I'd try something different but I was running into trouble -- now I see WHY. Thank you SO much for helping me to understand colors and mixing. I love to paint red rock scenery (like Sedona) and I would love to know how to get the many different kinds of reds and oranges you see in the southwest. Like a purple-kind of orange, a bronzey-kind of orange, etc. (sorry for the spelling, had to guess on that one - lol). Question: Your Cad Red color that you use -- is that a cad red medium? Also, can you recommend a good brand of extender for acrylic paint? I live in Southern California and my acrylic paint dries up SO fast! It is crazy. Thank you.

Those are some of the best primaries. You can do alot with them holbein is amazing. With those you could add warm red, Warm yellow and a red bias blue to create a split primary palette. But they are strong on their own too.

Thank you for this video, it's totally gonna help me. Ironically before you mentioned Golden seperating the warm from cool comors, I was going to make my pages in my book (I got the same one you do) & then organize my paint draw as I have many brands and shades of color. I paint pour as well.

I wish I would have known this when I was still working. I spent a lot of money and time because of my ignorance. However, in my defense, in all of the art related continuing education I was involved in, THIS never came up. Color wheels - yes, but never THIS. ARG!!!! Going forward as a beginning canvas painter, now I know :

About phthalo blue. It's not actually correct to call it leaning towards green per se. It depends on the pigment used. There's phthalo blue green shade (PB 15:3) and there's phthalo blue red shade (PB15:6). So always check the pigments used in your paints.

This is extremely helpful! I'm wanting to start with Liquitex basic acrylics. I can't find all the exact colors you recommend and I'm a little bit confused. Which colors would you recommend from liquitex basics?

Ok, I have to ask. Are you referencing a color called Tight Knit Yellow when it comes to the color you couldn't offer? I've tried listening, and put closed captioning on... and thats what it comes up with. Thanks! Great video!!

    What about making neon colors

    • @TheArtSherpa
      @TheArtSherpa  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

EPIC question. You can create a Neon Hue .....almost but when its next to neon pigments you 100% will be able to tell. True neon colors, known for their intensely vibrant and luminous quality, are challenging to mix from regular paint pigments. HAAARRRDDD.
This is due to the unique properties of neon colors:
Luminosity: Neon colors have a luminous quality that is not typically found in standard paint pigments. This luminescence is often due to fluorescent dyes or pigments that absorb and then re-emit light. Fluorescent Properties are odd to the eye: Many neon colors are fluorescent, meaning they absorb and emit light in a way that regular pigments do not. This is what gives neon colors their distinctive, bright look. you see it when you see it. That said Neons are not lightfast so we artists have to have light fast work arounds. Tips:
The key to achieving a neon-like effect is to use the brightest, most vivid pigments available.
If you're working with acrylics, you might find more vibrant options available, as acrylic pigments can often be more intense than those in oil paints.
The final appearance will depend on the types of pigment used and the lighting conditions under which the color is viewed.
Remember, while you can get close to a neon hue, regular pigments might not replicate the full luminosity and intensity of true neon colors. I like lemon Yellow Hansa , phthalo green and Zinc White to get a VERY vibrant neon green.
Can Red light , true quin magenta , and zinc white for neon pink like color
While you can mix regular pigments to get close to some neon-like hues, achieving the true fluorescent quality of neon colors requires specific neon or fluorescent pigments. These specialized pigments are often available in acrylics, inks, and other mediums. If you're looking to create artwork with neon effects, it's best to purchase paints that are specifically labeled as neon or fluorescent. This is long but that was a fun question

You know.. I have taken art classes and things... but I NEVER remember learning that about COLOR.. I remember learning ABOUT color in grade school. RED YELLOW BLUE .. make all the colors.. with light.. but when you go into art class.. that gets funky. Of course when you are a little kid painting with Tempra paints in your little classwroom you may not care that the GREEN or ORANGE isn't PERFECT.. right? and then later, I am like .. what is this with CYAN and MAGENTA? I remember discovering that on my Inkjet printers... and I am like huh?? Again. Thanks for pointing out that PIGMENT mixing is not that easy as just mixing pure color... sigh. I am sitting here going " Guess I will need this color and this color and this color" cause I don't know HOW to make all those colors..... LOL.
