As an interior designer, this professional knows what she's talking about. This is good, well articulated advice and is worth listening to and taking notes. Particularly for younger design students, these are excellent rules and suggestions to pay attention to.
Nothing even compares to it. I hear so much dubious advice on other decorating channels. "Stick to neutrals only because saturated color looks cheap" and "get rid of all your mirrored pieces" (including my Serge Roche console) and "never use folding screens" and even "don't buy things because you like them, instead stick to one decorating style." I feel like I am going to bang my head against my keyboard because I know more than they do and I know next to nothing. Now this video spoke to me and told me things I needed to know. I must have stopped and rewound 25 times at least. I have been attempting to channel Miles Redd and his look is very eclectic. This is very helpful. She is a real decorator not a one trick pony type who has one look and when it goes out of style she is over.
The best and only coherent clever interior design advice video I have seen in a very long time Thank you! Gonna watch the rest of your videos right away! 🙏🏽
Well I finally know what my style! I love colors a lot. I decorate with things my friends and family give me or things I purchased, but color is my favorites. Thank you
As someone who loves to thrift homeward, my style is definitely leaning this way from a mostly mid century base. Someone said you should have one antique in every room and I’m starting to incorporate that into my home now starting with an ornate carved wooden chest that’s been in my family, for generations. I loved the examples you gave because usually this “maximalist” style can hurt my brain, but these examples were clearly well thought out when designed, instead of more is more.
Ahhh so this is my design style! I love mixing traditional pieces with MCM, I love colors and wood and textured textiles like velvet and tweed and boucle. I’m glad to know I’ve been naturally following “the rules” like number of metals, colors etc. I feel so Chuc now lol
Emily Henderson says that traditional and mid century go together like a hand in glove. She made a "style wheel" (like a color wheel) that shows the complimentary look to each style -her opinion but still I found it fun to study. I am traditional, contemporary and Hollywood regency/glam. I really like that Grand Millennial look which is an eclectic look that includes traditional design.
Thank you for explaining the eclectic style. I was very afraid I was doing something wrong when every interior design video said to choose only three colors when I always end up with four/five. Same with styles. It gave me confidence I needed
I really like your style 's very difficult to find a designer that can translate your desires and need into a real valuable recently find folks from a studio called Snugverse, and I can say that they deliver outstanding work.
Excellent video; just excellent. I’ve never heard it broken down like that. That was very much appreciated and helpful. Also, you have some of the most amazing images I’ve seen. I actually plan on going back through the video and pausing on my favorites. A couple of them even looked like my great room! 😃 Thank you.

Thank you very much for the information on Eclectic style. Ive had trouble finding videos on this style let alone accurate guidelines and suggestions. I enjoyed the video and the pictures used. I would love to see more videos about this. 😊
Amazing! These are wonderful tips and you really understood the "ecletic" meaning... bold colors, patterns etc. I'm tired of seeing videos about decorating and ecletic living room and seing some boring ass white curtains, plain carpets...
I never buy matching sets. Nothing matches but everything goes. I have furniture from the 1970's, 1930's and late 1800's....and artwork of all types! I throw it all together and it looks amazing!
So much useful information, very visual presentation so newbie like me actually understand how to go eclectic. Personally, I love vintage pieces but need a versatile areas in our home, this design style makes the most sense
I like the eclectic style with mismatched furniture. Unfortunately my husband and my mother in law like matching furniture so our house is filled with boring matching sets.
Move the pieces around the house. Put that love seat in the bedroom. Put the dresser in the dining room and the buffet in the bedroom. Exchange your end tables for your nightstands. You can keep it all, just mix it up. Do it when he is out of the house. lol
@@xxjones Thank you! That is how I handled some of my matching pieces. That said having a few matching pieces broken up by things that are different can be good by grounding the space. . Like owning the same set of dressers and end table but adding a different finish on the bed and a wardrobe. It is only bad when it looks like a furniture showroom and there is nothing for interest or contrast. I actually have a bed, dresser and night stand that match in my bedroom but I also have a linen press, chaise, loveseat, nightstand and folding screen in differing finishes. The few matching pieces ground the room nicely.
@@Kaththee That is a great comment! I agree and don't agree at the same time. :-) I think an eclectic style can be born out of not having enough money - having to start out with hand me downs, thrift shop finds, and some IKEA pieces. The point is that it has to be styled or as she said "curated", that is, the pieces and colours are chosen and arranged in a thoughtful manner, to create harmony. And that style can grow - eventually you may be able to add some more expensive furniture pieces, or antiques, or lush textiles, or art work, moving to different places and the style will evolve naturally.
@@xxjones - I love your comment as well. I don't think we disagree at all. Most people start out with little money and their salaries increase with time. If eclectic design is your love you will stick with mixing and matching as your finances improve. But if isn't really you then you will develop a different aesthetic which is fine too. True eclecticism requires quite a few good pieces to carry the space, but they are often available on the cheap. I wait for a trend to go out and I will buy the real deal for the cost of a cheap fake because they often get confused in with the junk. There is this TH-cam "decorator" who claims that mirrored furniture is completely out so now is a good time to look for a Serge Roche mirrored piece selling along side the mirrored stuff from Zgallerie and I scored mine recently. When Tuscan went out I bought beautiful oversized Italian cache pots and vases. The only part where I have to spend the big bucks is on textiles and a few pieces that just had to fit perfectly like my kitchen banquette.
Totally agree. Your home should be as you yourself like it to be. Have always found that good old thing called money to be the most difficult factor to solve when there are items you see you would just love to have but cannot possibly afford. Lovely to see colour in rooms as apposed to the soul less white minimalist popular style these days plus not at all realistic with 3 little children charging around followed by the dog but having said that thought a lot of your portrayed rooms very OTT and would present the same actual family problems. One cannot ‘live’ in a show house. Hey ho, I’m just jealous! Some excellent points in your very quickly spoken video tho. Thank you.
You don't have to have the same style decor in your whole house. Bedrooms especially can be different. Decorating your home is usually a personal thing for people and should always reflect your personality and should be what you like.
Agree wholeheartedly with you! I love walking into a room, perhaps a bedroom, but at least one that's separated, visually, from any others, and get a completely different. vibe than anywhere else in the house. A feeling of having entered a different world!
Agreed. My home is very “eclectic”. In my living areas it could be described as a maximalists dark academia, but my personal bedroom is very boho, with deep, rich colors that bounce off the light from my curtains, and many, many colorful throws and tapestries. I will not change this for anyone else’s ideas of interior design decorum.
That's is an awesome video....it is indeed a complete guideline for an eclectic style...as I also have an eclectic style in my interior so it became my guide book to improve my style...I really enjoyed it thoroughly and watched it twice and stopped it again and again to see those wonderful images ....thank you so much for sharing...you are amazing 😍😍😍😘😘😘🤗🤗🤗
I'm learning so much from your videos. I always thought I hated eclectic style because most of the rooms that were described as eclectic were that chaotic mess you talked about. I found by looking at the excellent rooms you showed us here that my style is actually eclectic and I never knew it. Am happy to learn that I did a pretty good job of putting things together! I so appreciate the large number of sample rooms you show us and always have to watch several times to take it all in. Thank you!
This is an awesome video! I have a question- why is it a good idea to go dark in a powder room? How can I make sure I don’t turn my powder room into an oppressive void, while embracing a dark color scheme already in my rented powder room?
Hi, I just found your channel and I think is very interesting, I love eclectic but my favorite style is Old World, can you do a video about this style? New subscriber here 🙋🏽♀️ I hope you can see my home and give me your professional opinion 😊 I definitely want to paint some walls in a bronze or mustard color 😇
When I eventually get a house I would like to decorate it with lots of style and culture. Would it be a good idea to decorate each room with its own style or should the whole house have a cohesive eclectic style to it? For instance for the media/game room in thinking using all IKEA furnitures and Nordic influence. For the formal living room it would be French. What do you think? Thank you.
If you want eclectic design and want to take the advice in the video to pick a few styles and stick with them but that said you can change up the mix. In your living room for example you could have 70% French, contemporary20% and a bit of Nordic 10%. Then when you got to the game room/media room do mostly contemporary, 70% Nordic 20% and then a little bit of French 10%. I am making up random percentages as an example not telling you how to pick YOUR mix. You do that to make it what you want. I have seen transitions work well when the percentages change up but not the entire look. With accessories you can have fun and add a pieces from your travels and sometimes the odd thing just works. I am mostly traditional, some contemporary and a bit of glam Hollywood regency and I threw a Mora clock from Sweden in the mix and it works beautifully. My favorite motto on eclectic design that I read so long ago I can no longer remember who said it (I even googled) is that "in eclectic design the best always goes with the best." So because the Mora clock is a real antique Swedish clock it works with my other things. Then again really good reproductions can be high quality. There is an exception to every rule. That is the great thing about the rules, when you know them you can break them with panache. I hope I helped and didn't confuse you more. I am sure your new home will be beautiful. You sound like you already have a vision.
I just bought an Everglades green velvet tufted couch amp a rug with an abstract pattern of Matt yellow, white, green, and blue. My walls are white and I am trying to keep to the colors of green yellow black and white but am stumped when it comes to end tables and coffee tables. Can I get all different styles and mix woods with metals or marble and if that would work how do I know what color of woods (light or dark) would marry the space not make it seem dark and small, help lol any suggest would be much appreciated
