I have listened to this podcast 4 times….
My dad told a couple stories about things they saw in Laos regarding animals helping one another. The first was about these birds who built their nest in a hole in a tree. The male would cover up the hole to where only a small hole is left. Only big enough for the male to feed the female and chicks through. the female and eggs will stay inside until the chicks are ready to come out and the male would break open the hole. He said there was a time where the male could break the barrier and he tried all day but to no avail. It ended up leaving and the people observing the situation thought it had given up. Hours later it came back with a bigger male who started working on breaking the barrier. Eventually the bigger male was successful and all the chicks and female flew out. The second story was a snake that was climbing a tree to get at a birds eggs. The bird wasn’t able to fend off the snake so it flew away and came back with a falcon. The falcon dived and hit the snake out of the tree and flew off.
The 1st bird ur talking about is called HORNBILL.
Yea i saw like 2 minutes of one clip and i got absolutely addicted to hearing this guy talk about the jungle
I’ve spent time in the bush. Other side of the world from the Amazon - Borneo, New Guinea, Sulawesi, Sumatra. You have to respect it every second. Let your guard down or lose focus, and you could be in a bad spot fast. But I also think it is undeniable that it’s the most beautiful and inspiring place on the planet.
In my opinion, one of the worst ways to die is in isolation, so that your death will forever be speculated and a mystery to your family. The mind often makes up the darkest of scenarios, so the surviving family would likely think the worst of your final hours. In a way, you'd be torturing them.
Good point. People made horror movies about that.
That's why they say the biggest type or punishment is prison is isolation. You go nuts

I'd love to spend time in the jungle. But my absolute worst fear is spiders. So that's pretty much a wrap on that idea.
If you spent time in the jungle like this guy has, you would never be scared of spiders again.
That's one of my biggest fears. Getting lost in the Amazon but I will never put myself in a situation to be there

One question I have though is why didn't you simply bring the boat on land? If it was small enough to sink from 15 minutes worth of rain it was small enough that you could have just shored it.
Maybe the terrain didn't allow for the boat to be dragged on land, and if you are alone and extremely drained of energy that feat of just getting the boat on land can be extremely hard.
It is not as simple as one might think
Unusually heavy rain remember and i imagine the boat would be a lot heavier once filled with water.

@@fourteendays544 I lived on a lake and had multiple boats, and I honestly can't think of a situation with a boat on a river being too heavy. It just wouldn't happen. When boats get to a certain size they tend to have bilge pumps, but honestly I can't see that being the case here. My guess is it was probably a 10 foot aluminum dingy type situation that they would be using, that would make the most sense, and if not it would have been a wooden boat similar to your rowboat but with a motor on it. Either way the story of it filling with rainwater and sinking is just not feasible and I have serious doubts about that particular part of his story. I think a lot of the things he says are mostly true with some exaggeration thrown in but the boat story just seems 100% bovine excrement.
Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it's a lie. You can't compare a lake house to the Amazon jungle lol.
What a great point about us having the general assumption that every animal is the mean of its species. We can notice possibly physical deviance but we don’t think about the varying ranges of intellect.

The fact that he is from New York, not a place full of wild animals (except maybe the people, joke 😅😂)is even more inspiring how he can survive in the Amazon. Maybe being from New York made him so tough that he was able to survive down there.
That's typical tropical rainforest. Never go into small or large rivers. It's nasty.

It's a central issue for humans..are we so far removed, and I reckon in a city like new York we are..from the connection to basic observation of animals and our environment? We are like children when it comes to real instinctual monkey wisdom in this regard. As you say, people are blown away by simple revelations of everything being connected & intelligent. Probably the planet itself is intelligent? The ultimate oneness of it all is there to observe if one can dump the dull conditioning of convenient existence in a safe capsule. I feel fortunate to have grown up in Australia where ignorance of such things gets you bitten, drowned, burned or lost..its taken me 50 odd years to really comprehend the basic stuff that is actually right in front of you but hard to distinguish when you're born & educated to be a consumer.

Yo!!! I paused the video halfway through the penguin story and had the same thought as Lex. Maybe that penguin has a mrs penguin he has an urgency to get back to, rather than the urgency to march away from who you know and to your death, which ye is dark.

Penguins aren't lost or deranged. We assign those labels.
Are animals compassionate? Are insects compassionate? Perhaps mankind exists out of their compassion. They may have great hopes for what we can become.

@@apelincoln1616 now that you mention it, I've heard of that as well. I don't know if it was a lioness or another big cat, but I remember it being a mother who just lost her cub. Maternal instinct is a powerful thing. Good point.
