The Pope has led an open air mass for one (m) million Filipinos on the busiest day yet of his five day visit to the Philippines.
The Pontiff also met Filipino bishops, attended the 25th anniversary of a Catholic radio station, and was to meet with young people at an evening vigil.
Security has been tightened during the visit as police hunt suspected Muslim extremists alleged to be plotting bomb attacks against the Pope.
About a million people filled the grounds outside the Philippine International Convention Centre, beside Manila Bay, to hear a mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II.
The mass celebrating 400 years of Christianity in the Philippines took place on Saturday morning, but some worshippers came as early as Friday evening.
The Pontiff was given a warm welcome by the crowd when he arrived on board his "pope mobile". Waving "Viva Il Papa" flags, they sang hallelujah as he passed.
The Pope waved and blessed people as he approached the altar.
The atmosphere was festive, but some people had to be treated for heat exhaustion during the mass and hospital officials say a 74-year old woman died of a heart attack.
One woman who wanted to take communion at the hand of the Pope was stopped by security men .
Security forces are on alert after reports of a plot by Muslim extremists to carry out attacks during the Pope's visit to the Philippines.
Security at Manila's international airport has been reinforced as the reported threat includes possible attacks on U.S. commercial airlines flying over the Pacific.

Majority of Imelda's shoe's were actually samples and was given to her by the local shoemakers so she can wear it and endorse it to boost the economy...go and see it for yourself in the museum it's there for everyone to see . Imelda is an intelligent diplomat and her projects are focused on the Filipino people that is still being used today. They're the one's what made public utilities such as water, electricity, transportation and education free for Filipinos hence Filipino overseas workers were mostly engineers, nurses and teachers. Land was cheap back then hence I grew up with no slums around.... If you want proof google their government policies it's free for everyone to download lol

Popes should spend a lot more time visiting the Philippines to feel what its like to be a pope of the 14th century. Here people still believe in holy blood and actual magical relics where abortion is illegal and so is divorce. It's completely like Italy 500 years ago.

Jack Ryan Filipino tradition believes that flowers from a holy celebration (like that of a feast day of a saint, or in this case, a papal mass) is also holy
They usually take it to decorate their home altars

They do not invade the sacred altar... the flowers used in special occasions here in the philippines are usually given to the people... those flowers are second class relics. can you imagine having a relic in your homes? And don't you dare adress us "peasants". Let us settle this peacefully. Where you from?

Koran came around 6th century, whereas Catholicism has been alive since the time of the apostles. Before Muhammad, there had been Church fathers like, Saint Ambrose of Milan, Saint Augustine of Hippo, Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Saint Jerome, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem and many more. Christianity existed first. It may not be a matter of of who came first, but pertaining to us it is.
