Thanks for this, Chris. There is so much wisdom in Chesterton, especially in his high regard for paradox.
I have to chuckle to myself a little when the "new" atheists behave as if they're the first people to have noticed the problem of innocent suffering. My first response is, "You _have_ heard of the Book of Job, haven't you?" Oftentimes, the response is (after one cuts through the bluster), "No". Even the atheists of approximately a century ago, with whom Chesterton remonstrated, wouldn't have been _that_ ignorant. Simple facts like the idea that the question had actually been considered before would have been part of the cultural milieu then; we've lost that in recent times, to our intellectual detriment.
Of course, as Chesterton hints at the end, the answer to the question of innocent suffering is found in the person of Jesus Christ, as unfashionable as it is to say that. When I consider the conversions of Antony Flew and Leah Libresco, among others, I have hope that it may become fashionable again.

With the Prologue, Job does not know wy he is suffering, but we, the audience, does. Without the Prologue, neither Job nor the audience knows why Job is suffering and, when God appears and tells Job that it is not his place to know, He is also telling us the same thing.
