Max was the first Ultra I ever met as a kid. I remember waiting patiently everyday for the next episode to air over on Cartoon Network. As a Power Rangers-loving little goblin, I absolutely enjoyed this show so much. My friends at the time kept pointing out how the english dub was weird but I didn't mind it as long as I get to see a giant alien dude fight giant monsters. Max is definitely and will always be one of my favorite Ultras
There was a segment I cut from this review where I talked about the show's tonal inconsistencies that I guess I should elaborate on here. One episode will be something dark, like Kaito having some internal struggle about what would have happened if Max never saved him, and then the next would be some silly crap about a farting alien. I will say, I am somewhat used to an Ultraman show having a smorgasbord of clashing tones, but I will concede that it could potentially be a problem for some viewers. It didn't really bother me that much because by being an episodic show it's allowed to tell a variety of stories of varying tones, and it never goes too far in one direction without being able to rebound.
Also an addendum. Max technically wasn't the first to do a tribute to the franchise's legacy, you could argue Ultraman Powered being an American """""update""""" of the original show is one, and the Tiga episode that took place during the filming of Ultra Q was the first major callback of sorts. Max was just the first to provide fanservice of the level we would see in Mebius onward.

While we now know that ULTRAMAN MAX was a homage to the shows that came before, I feel it's a detriment for new viewers especially unforgiving American novices who are not aware of the tropes of the original Ultraman, a similar problem I have against Ultraman Tiga and its scatter brain story decisions and how it constantly ruined character progression and even basic continuity within the same episode. However, I'll give Ultraman Max a pass due to its creativity and craft and will be happy to revisit the show when it comes to US DVD soon.

The way I first saw Ultraman Max was here on youtube, with subtitles edited into the footage. This was well over a decade ago, and Ultraman Max has been one of my favorite Ultra series and Ultra heroes ever since. I don't know if the channel which posted the episodes is even still up, nor do I remember its name, but I still remember how happy I was as a child watching Ultraman Max.
I dont about other but to me Ultramen are divided into 2 types: The standard "almond eyes" type (Ultraman, Jack, Zoffy, Tiga, Dyna, Gaia, Cosmos etc.) and the "sharp yellow eyed" types that are usually more red in their suit designs (Seven, Ace, Taro, Leo, Max, Zero etc.). At the time 2005, Max is like fresh air as it is the first "yellow eyed" to appear once again in the heisei era, you can tell as I notice that the yellow eyed red Ultras usually are so faced paced in their fights
I still think Max has some of the better comedy in the franchise, it was the most consistently funny show for me from what I can remember (though it's been a while since I've seen it). It definitely had some duds, the Alien Shamer episodes in particular were soul draining, but other than that I can't remember any other huge comedic failures, and the comedy of the show really stuck with me (though as you mention in the review there's a lot of good stuff going on with the show).
episode 1 of max for years has genuinely been one of my favorite episodes in the franchise, so learning about a year or teo ago that the episode debuted on my 4th birthday blew my mind and made it feel all the more special to me+

I was looking forward to this video since I saw your posts about it around the same time as I started watching Max. I actually just finished Max yesterday night so I’m glad I was able to watch this video with a fresh recollection. I can’t really say I disagreed with anything here. I wasn’t expecting much from Max at first and I was really blown away. The first few episodes worried me since I found them feeling a bit generic, and the “THANK YOU TO CORPORATE OVERLORD FOR MAKING THIS SHOW” towards the beginning of the first few episodes was kind of off putting too, but by the end I was really charmed by this show. I’d almost say it may have in part inspired the format for a lot of modern Ultra shows since it felt very similar. Great video, very interested to see your thoughts on other ultra shows!
1: Ultraman should have been released in the year 2007 as a post anniversary of Ultraman and as an anniversary of Ultra Seven. 2: Millcreek should have released Ultraman Max on DVD with the English Dub.
Max is one of those shows that I don’t think we’re ever going to get again. That “anthology” vibe is completely missing from modern Ultra series. And that era of Ultraman will forever be my favorite (Nexus-Max-Mebius)
Max Is Certainly More Popular Than Other KR Shows Such as Hibiki、Kiva、Fourze and Wizard At Bare Minimum Imo + Poor Hibiki、Kiva、Fourze and Wizard Get Crushed Between The Iconic Faiz、Blade、Den-O、Decade、Double、OOO and Gaim.
Personally, It's one of my absolute favorite as a standalone series that holds all of the core parts of Ultraman's identity; in my top 3 with '66 and Tiga.

Omni Productions could have made the dub, or maybe the same actors worked for a variety of different dubbing studios in Hong Kong and one of them made it, who can say for sure as these dubbers barely got credited. As long as Ultraman max didn't have to deal with the likes of "Unicorn" from Transformers: the Headmasters, I'm sure he'll be fine, but please Max, don't come yourself!

Okay.....I can't watch this video, because I haven't watched Max yet. Now if this was a retrospective on something like, say, Powered I probably wouldn't care. But Max is a show I'm excited for. Maybe it's because of the fact that it marked the return of many classic kaiju such as Alien Baltan, Eleking, Antlar and the rest. Maybe it's because they had to do it coming off of their situation after Nexus. Maybe it's just because of the fact that I love the opening theme (MAX, MAX, MAX). But I think the real reason is because it's one of those Heisei era shows that not many people talk about. Throw a few stones into a crowd of Ultrafans and you'll hit a ton of Tiga and Mebius fans. But I feel like Max was never one of the more vastly preferred series. And hell I love obscure corners. I watched stuff like The☆Ultraman and Super Fighter Legend simply because it was obscure, and while Max is certainly more well known than at least the latter thing, I still want to keep that unknown experience relatively fresh for myself. I won't be getting to it for a while, since I've been putting off Ace for months now, and despite the universe converging to inform me that that series is not great, I will go through it with the end goal that I'll get to watch Max and see it for what it really is. That promise of the unknown and some guaranteed fun times is what keeps me going. That and the Antlar episode. Shusuke Kaneko directing an Ultraman episode is something I *HAVE* to see.
14:49 Series range from amazing to crushingly disappointing to me, and Ultraman Max stood out in how middling and unimpressive it was, so bland that it's the only main Heisei era series that I never watched to completion. Which is all the more amazing that the IF episode is one of the greatest Ultraman episodes ever to me. Of course the main cast is still bland, but it all the more exemplifies how the monster, characters, plot, and settings of the week are so important to Ultraman stories.
It was just decent for me: nothing too spectacular; but not exactly meh. Ultra-big thanks to Tsuburaya for uploading this on their TH-cam channel way back 2020.

Alien Shamer's mannerisms was said to have been based on Jim Carrey. Not everyone was a fan of his brand of comedy and Tommy Lee Jones, who co-starred with him in Batman Forever, hated him saying "I cannot sanction your buffonery" straight to guy's face.

Max is one of my favorite entries in the Ultra Series, even above stuff like Ultraseven.
Personally, It's one of my absolute favorite as a standalone series that holds all of the core parts of Ultraman's identity; in my top 3 with '66 and Tiga.
Ultraman Max was a great show, and a nice tribute to the Showa era Ultra series. I preferred Max over Mebius.
All of the dub voices here, I've heard before on Animax Asia, when they had more dubbed Anime almost 20 years ago.
