Now there are 10 Thaats (Classified by Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande ji) and all raagas which come under a Thaat have common characteristics in terms of 'chalan, swars, vaadi-samvaadi swars etc. The Thaat gets its name from the main raag (Ashray raag). * Raag-Raagini system was prevalent when raagas were depicted in the form of paintings and personified as male- female. Eg. Bhairav raag was male while Bhairavi raag female
