    How strange when a comedy sketch can actually move you .... This is actually quite sad but tragically funny

      rita_de_peeves Yes it's brilliant! It really takes skill to combine sadness and comedy like this and it's all the more powerful because there really are lots of women like Elaine out there (to a less extreme extent haha).

    The title is a little misleading, there is not 'hysterical' pregnancy at all. Its a psychological one!

    • @banjoman44
      @banjoman44 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Krijn van Alten False pregnancy, phantom pregnancy, or hysterical pregnancy- officially called pseudocyesis in humans and pseudopregnancy in other mammals-is the appearance of clinical or subclinical signs and symptoms associated with pregnancy when the organism is not actually pregnant.

    • @KAvanAlten
      @KAvanAlten 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      banjoman44 But why is it called hysterical then? I mean, with such a pseudocyesis there is not actually something in the uterus, right?

    • @banjoman44
      @banjoman44 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The word 'hysteria' is based on a Greek word
      for ''uterus'' It was once thought that many diseases and ailments that affected women were due problems with the uterus. The word has now changed meaning, although we still speak of women undergoing a hyster-ectomy. ie removal of the uterus.The word hysterical is now concerned with emotional excess - something that someone with a pseudocyesis
      will likely experience.

    • @KAvanAlten
      @KAvanAlten 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      banjoman44 I know that, but I thought that in the medical word these days 'hysteria' in the meaning of the emotional condition is avoided. So if you see it used now in medical terminology (like hysterical pregnancy or the hysterectomy) it refers only to the meaning of uterus.
      But, I have to honest: this is (I think) the case in the Dutch medical word, I can't speak of the situation outside the Netherlands.
      Also: on the Dutch Wikipedia, the synonym hysterical pregnancy is not used, but pseudocyesis is named instead. I know this is not hard proof for anything, but it might be a sign that the word 'hysterical pregnancy' is not that common used (anymore) here.

    • @banjoman44
      @banjoman44 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are right Krijn, the term 'hysterical pregnancy' is certainly a term of antiquity.

    Unbelievable as it might be I can vouch for the truth of this situation….as a childcare SW I met a young woman who not only lied about her pregnancy to her parents….they bought all the gear…cot, pram, clothes..bedding, bottles etc…she went up to her room one night and came down telling her parents that she had had the babe and it was sleeping in the cot…and she was going up the pub. They investigated and found that the baby in the cot was a doll….long before the days of these lifelike ones…she told other whoppers too….and people believed her.

      @Widdekuu91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ...What do you mean? The feminists need to deal with the fact that you think it's sad that a babyless mother is in denial and confronted with being unfertile?
      How do you expect them to 'deal' with the fact? Do you assume they dislike hearing that there are men that have feelings and show concern for women's issues?
      ...isn't that exactly what they wánt? Don't you mean; "There you go, dear feminists! Hope you like my expression of feelings! "?

      @@Widdekuu91 One of the great things about comedy is that it can tell truths that everyone knows but none dare to say. Elanie Figgis is a fictional character but has enough truth to be recognizable. It's 2006 and she is probably late 40s early 50s. She is infertile NOW but she may have been as fertile as any woman ever. Her natural fertility window has passed. What was she doing with her life for the past 25 years ? She is not just unhappy, she is so desperately unhappy she is starting to hallucinate, that is mentally unwell. Feminists would have you believe that any differences in mental attitudes between men and women are the result of socialization, which they call an oppressive patriarchy which can be changed, not the result of biology which cannot, which they call biological determinism.
      Middle aged women who are childless and alone are growing in number. Is their unhappiness the result of socialization by the oppressive patriarchy ? Is that a problem that feminists can deal with ? Or will they just blame men and society for the painful results caused by women's own choices ?

Crying Troll if you find some one who won't affirm your beliefs is childish. I am not your Mum and I'm not your therapist. I'm not required to provide you with a comforting space. Nobody is denying anyone's right to choose. But that's not the same as saying anyone who wants children has the right to HAVE children. We have, at best, the right to try.

      @@jakedee4117 Feminist urge women to get financially independent. Sperm banks have been around quite a time. As well as information about women's fertility and that is not a good idea to leave it too late. So you are right, if someone just figures out as middle aged that she wants kids, she should put the blame on feminists. That the feminists have not had their message out clear and loud enough that women should have better chances to better income generation early enough in life to be able to have kids before one becomes infertile. There are many young couples who would want children but cannot afford to. Also young families with kids very often face financial problems. Why is that. Even with both parents working!

      Because people like that have their priorities fucked up they would rather go hungry than be seen badly dressed if they were physically wasting away they would insist that they were deliberately trying to lose weight

    Seems like all the Americans think this is sad. It’s not sad, it’s hilarious. Life doesn’t revolve around getting married and popping out kids for everyone.

    • @juliannehannes11
      @juliannehannes11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have some compassion, being a woman you are raised to believe life revolves around marriage and popping out kids and get punished for having career ambitions and women who don't want children are villified. The world is cruel to childless women, you are being cruel dismissing their agony. I hope in your next life you'll be born a girl and maybe then you'll understand.

    • @fiachdubhe401
      @fiachdubhe401 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's sad because the character is clearly unhappy. Many people are happy childless, but if this character was happy childless, she wouldn't have a hysterical pregnancy and fake it all the way through.

    • @Murderdogs
      @Murderdogs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's nothing about being *raised* with those beliefs, there are biological urges to reproduce which have nothing to do with your upbringing. Far more powerful than any beliefs could be.

    • @AdamDavidRusso

      Life is *nothing* without those things. It doesn't revolve around them, but it doesn't have em it's empty.

      @@juliannehannes11 I am British & 66 years old. I was never raised just to be a mother & was encouraged to have a career. All my friends were too, some had children & some didn't & that was okay, nobody vilified them. Is this the norm in the US to believe that women are raised just to have kids?.

    I used to think this was hilarious, and it still is comic genius but as you get older you realise how heartbreaking it is too. She's a bit daft, but all she wants to is to feel loved.

      Our sweetest laughter is bought with our sweetest pain…something…a great poem I should not have ballsed up completely and forgotten, says. This character works so incredibly well because she’s both. Loove our Footlong Figgis
