  • A rare interview with nazi ss officer franz suchomel (Capitalization purposely unused), discussing his experience as an ss officer at treblinka concentration camp August 1942 - October 1943, thereafter sobibor. trieste 1944.
Sentenced to 6 years in 1965. Released in 1969.
suchomel was unaware that the interview was being remotely videotaped by the interviewer Claude Lanzmann's assistants in the Volkswagen bus shown at the beginning of Part 1 of the video.

When answering what his first impression of Treblinka was, he replies that it was catastrophic and, “We had not been told how and what...” and then he stops himself and inserts, “that people were being killed there.” I wonder what he was initially going to say. “We had not been told how and what _________”(fill in the blank). Did he interrupt himself because he came close to disclosing pre-knowledge of people being exterminated, or did he just find a better way of saying he didn’t know?
He said it was proven at his trial that he didn’t want to go to Treblinka, but he doesn’t say why. If all it was was guarding prisoners while they worked in factories, I’d be interested in knowing why he was so apparently strongly opposed to going.
I just sorely question his veracity regarding knowledge of the exterminations occurring.

    • @alfatejpblind6498
      @alfatejpblind6498 ปีที่แล้ว +13

There is no veracity to question, obviously he knew. Considering that this documentary astonishingly shows how every single polish farmer in a radius of X kilometers knew absolutely everything about the camps it’s totally obvious that a nazi official (who was already involved in Aktion T4 for god’s sake) had been briefed and informed long beforehand. You point out the contradiction too - how could he be so apprehensive about going that it’s judicially counted as a mitigating circumstance if he didn’t know anything about the crimes? I wonder what those prosecutors did at the trials… Absolutely useless… The nazis should’ve been extradited to Israel instead of being tried in the pseudo fascist state of West Germany.

This old man's death machine didn't stop during WWII to ask questions. He saves his only indignance to claim not eighteen thousand dead per day, but only twelve to fifteen thousand. I can't imagine serving twelve thousand people in one day at the food pantry, much less murdering that many people. Not once does he show emotion or commitment to anything or anyone.

I've watched all 7 parts of this interview. The man is being led by the interviewer, one that didn't ask the hard questions, the contradictions on his descriptions of the events. He was happy with the answers, it suited his agenda and boasted the ego of this old man trying to find his own redemption. Just for this part one:
    - He arrived in late August when Treblinka was operating at full capacity (Prt 1 - 2.27). Three trains arrived in two days, each with 3, 4 or 5 thousand people from Warsaw (ghetto being emptied) (Prt 1 - 2:55). At minute 3:04 he states: - other trains arrived from Kielce and other places. So now the trains did not come from Warsaw alone as stated a few moments before.
    - Half of the people on the trains was dead (Prt 1 - 3:38) The rest was half dead or half mad. The dead (thousands) were piled up on the ramp like wood (Prt 1 - 4:24). The living were left on the station (Prt 1 - 3:24) were they would wait for 2 or 3 days because the small gas chambers could not keep up even though they functioned day and night (Prt 1 - 4:50). How many small gas chambers were there? Two? He does not clarify. As he does not clarify when the "new" chambers were built.
    - On Part 2 he states: More and more people arrived in trains and the small chambers could no cope (Prt 2 - 3:28). So one has to assume that the pile of corpses on the ramp, like wood, grew and grew. Meanwhile the living, waiting there for 3 days foresaw their own death. You bet! As Mount Everest of corpses is there before their eyes on the ramp and the infernal smell from the camp spread for miles (Prt 2 - 2:38) one would assume death was near. Besides they heard the noise of the engine feeding the gas chamber - a tank engine that delivered the poison gas (Prt 4 - 4:45). So now, one engine means one chamber not two. At 4:20 of part 2 he states that women slashed their daughters wrists and then their own. Interesting to see that the mothers were only concerned about the daughters. The sons? Fuck them. Others poisoned themselves (Prt 2 - 4:33). Right, when they left the ghetto they made sure that they carried a cyanide capsule with them...just in case! Or maybe they went into the woods to stuff their noses with poison ivy.
But there are records that show that this SS Officer is way out of reality: - "The first transports to Treblinka came from the Warsaw ghetto. Between the 23rd of July and the 21st of August 1942, a total of 254 000 Jews from Warsaw and 112 000 from other parts of the Warsaw region were murdered here." (www.holocaust.cz/en/history/concentration-camps-and-ghettos/treblinka-3/) - so in less than a month 366 000 people were exterminated at Treblinka. Now let's do the Math. The new chambers - 10 of them in rows of five - out of which only one row was operating (Prt 3 - 00:43) could take each 200 people inside in one go (in accordance with the jews because he, himself, an SS Officer on duty at Treblinka had no fucking idea of how many a chamber could take - but the jews knew, apparently one of them came from the dead after cremation to unveil the magic number). So we get, in one go, believing the number, 1000 jews killed in the 5 chambers. Now how long does it take to remove 200 bodies from a chamber? Is it fare to say one minute each? 200 bodies equals 200 minutes, in other words, more than three hours before the chamber can be used again. In order to "process" 366 000 individuals during those 29 days, 12 621 would have to be killed every day non-stop. This matches is statement in which he claims that 12 to 15 000 were liquidated every day (18 000 was excessive) (Prt 4 - 4:34) but, considering that you can liquidate 1000 (5 x 200) per each 4 hours (the killing takes time as well), you would be capable of having 6 "sessions" per day max at full capacity with no engine breakdowns, no maintenance, no disruptions during a full month. That is half of the required turnover of 12.6 "sessions" per 24 hours. He states that everyday 100 jews were selected to drag the bodies to the mass graves (Prt 2 - 1:23) but in the evening they were gassed or shot by the Ukranians. So that means that during the night there was no one to remove and drag bodies to the mass graves, further reducing the killing rithm. Get the picture? Someone is lying.
Back to SS suchomel and his bullshit on Part 2 soon.

God this is horrifying! I am an educated man, a longtime history teacher-yet watching this man casually discussing his part in making sure the Holocaust ran smoothly is just nauseating. One thing to teach about it, another to see it in person. So many trains arriving so quickly made him work very hard (At killing people), and we are supposed to feel sympathy or at least understand that was just his job? Scum. You need to put the whole post WWII era in historical perspective. The Nuremberg trials were conducted by the Allied powers and it's not like the Nazis stood-up and suddenly admitted they were wrong after the war. Many Nazis or Nazi sympathizers retained positions of authority after the war. West Germany was reticent to conduct many war crime trials of their own accord until the 90s when the post war generation realized that the country had adopted a conscious level of amnesia to the war crimes. Hence the reason why many of the 'real criminals' were either given 'token' sentences, allowed to live peacefully in post-war Germany, or allowed to escape to other countries with new identities. When you see trials these days it's typically low level guards who were not active participants in the Holocaust. In a sense, modern Germany is soothing their guilt of not having done anything for decades by prosecuting a bunch of 80 and 90 year old men. Hope this helps...

A standard sentence for blocking every critics was "If you don't like it here, go to the east" (east Germany and/or the communist countries). The old generation was fed up with war. Suchomel was put on trial, and anyone put on trial in Germany for these offenses was liable to be tried again if they ever changed their testimony. That's what happened to SS Oberhauser, who recanted his Belzec testimony later on. (That's why Oberhauser wouldn't talk to Lanzmann) Therefore, it is a certainty that Suchomel would not say anything to violate the mandated story, under threat that Lanzmann could make a complaint and have him put on trial again.

The Jewish population has notoriously been the scapegoats for governments (especially european) for over a thousand years. But if you were to look at Jews in Germany before the rise of Nazism how do you think they would identify themselves? The majority would say they were German, wouldn't you agree? As for Bolshevism, Jewish people were present of course, but so were Christians, neither Lenin nor Stalin were Jewish, and the Soviets were just as bad to their Jewish population as the Nazis.

The diesel argument is one of the more amusing aspects of the holocaust debate (at least for me), because deniers have set themselves a trap which they cannot get out of: WWII tanks only ran on two fuels, petrol and diesel; historians are still unsure about which type of engine was used at Treblinka, and, assuming that diesel fumes are not capable of killing en masse, then what is the only alternative?
    That's right.

"Do you mean that the guards are supposed to have sabotaged the water system and then stayed there and waited for the arrival of the Brits?"
Nope. When the British were given permission to enter Belsen by German High Command part of the deal was that soldiers already stationed there would be allowed to leave and return to German lines once the camp had been fully taken over. The British kept to the deal and released the soldiers concerned.

@deconneurnot "What criminals? The soldiers and guards sabotaged the water system as they left. The Luftwaffe bombed the camp a few weeks later."
Do you mean that the guards are supposed to have sabotaged the water system and then stayed there and waited for the arrival of the Brits?
The alleged bombing of the Bergen-Belsen camp by the Luftwaffe is not mentioned by any source, other than Monika Godeke, who wrote this in the Bergen-Belsen guidebook which is sold at the Memorial Site.

I never said it does. Which is why I prefer sourced and quoted material, instead of wild conjecture and speculation, which is so far all you have given.

I watched this interview before, and I need to make sure I watched the whole,.....ordeal in absorbing the, well, it makes me sick and speechless. But a true first hand historical account of what was done. People like this were part of the overall society that would accept being assigned to such death work,...I was unsure when watching if he was sickened by what he saw and did or how the smells and situations were repugnant to him. A clue to how the russians feel about Ukrainians and what has happened in Ukraine perpetrated by russian "nazi's" who also feel they are the master race on earth. This low level former soldier of course seems so low level, might not have had a choice apart from firing squad or death by russian front, like as a former soldier myself in the us army I felt like refusing to go to the first gulf war like a few others but the fear threat was not getting in their jails and not coming out alive somehow so soldiers will do whatever it takes to get a better chance of survival, the will to live is strong for everyone,...dunno.

Criminals in this country have been executed for being loosely connected with a murder (getaway driver). Here this unrepentant guard at a death camp, and most likely a killer, got a 4 year sentence , for his participation in 200,000 deaths.

This man is quite rare. Treblinka was staffed with very few Germans. Sometimes the entire SS contingent at Treblinka was a mere 25 Germans, just enough to control the 150-200 "selected" Jews who performed most of the manual labor and the sorting of property, cutting of hair, pulling gold teeth, etc. Not a lot of actual Germans, SS or otherwise staffed Treblinka since they did not maintain any considerable amount of prisoners. Most were killed within 2 hours of the trains arrival.

I love the way he did an about turn with the water issue. He felt it necessary to mention that it was the Allies that caused the water problem in Belsen. Like all deniers I am no doubt sure he believes that the diseases were the results of Allied actions and not a Nazi lack of concern. The problem is that diseases and death were rampant in German concentration camps like Belsen from Feb 1945. there was no military action anywhere near Belsen until April!
