  • Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans, has sparked a massive controversy after a video went viral. In the video, Dalai Lama can be seen kissing a boy at a public event and is also heard telling the boy - "suck my tongue".
The Dalai Lama has now apologized after the video created global outrage. In a statement, the office for the Dalai Lama said he “wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused,” adding he “regrets” the incident.
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras,” the statement said.
The incident reportedly took place during an event in the hillside city of Dharamshala in February.
Will the apology of the 87-year-old spiritual leader be sufficient?

The panel composition is heavily imbalanced to accommodate a fair discussion and diverse opinions. Instead of moderating the talk, Barkha leaned toward one side of the discussion right from the start. She is not playing the role of the moderator professionally and fairly. Her constant chiming in her opinion, rebutting/gagging Tenzin midway, and supporting the rest of the panelists' "opinions" throws off the balance of the discussion. This clearly contravenes the standards of journalism and committing a media crime. Well, what can you expect from some random Mojo channel?
Barkha, you can’t play both roles at once. Also, it was unclear how the so-called "poll" was collected and how many participated. Merely showing a fancy poll chart is not sufficient. Highly unprofessional and biased host and misrepresentation of facts. You either be a host or a panelist or maybe go back to your old job of reporting from the streets, screaming at the top of your lungs! You were good at doing that!

Likewise, I have heard you are paid media, i have seen and people commenting rubbish about you, your own Indian people, they say you are not a respectable journalist anymore. And now coming to the topic of this matter and in the interview here you mentioned with rhe panelists that you yourself had a huge respect towards His Holiness and now after this video clip your respect towards him is questionable . Ok I understand you and rest of the world who are non tibetans to react in such a way, bcuz i agree the pedophiles do exist. Similarly, if you ask me whether i jumped to the conclusion and beleived whther i believed people who comment you a d think you are not anymore a respectable journalist and you are a paid media, I did not. I am neutral, even though m less educated than you i never judged you, bcuz you are my lady hero who covered the kargil war. so, i didnt folowee the sheep i have my own mind to sit and think and reflect, unlike you who did not give a second thought to just jumped bandwagon. Likewise, i lost this trust towards you today. Same pinch, how does it feel when ur so misunderstood. i am not here to defend His Holiness, I simply wanted to ask you a simple question. Barkha. Don’t get wrong. The way his holiness the Dalai Lama uses his term “Suck” not meant to say in a literal meaning. But touch his tongue in a light-hearted manner. When you look closely from the source video that he didn’t touch the boy’s tongue. That’s why he apologises for the word may hurt the people on the social media. Sometimes he lost his translation in English. And, The event was took place in broad ‘daylight in front of cameras and audiences. Even his parents were sitting beside with the Dalai Lama. Labelling him as a child abuser and pedophile was not fitted. It is very early to say that he abuses the child without knowing the Dalai Lama intention. In a hype social media age, people easily tend to react so fast by the cover of its book. I am writing as a tibetan who have full believe in Dalai Lama.

    "Eat My Tongue"
The Tibetan Phrase "Che Le Sa"
    A KEY POINT MISSING:
In Tibetan culture, it is common to see the old grandparents not only give a pop kiss to the small children, but also give a small candy or piece of food to children from their mouths - directly mouth to mouth. This may not be the norm of your culture, but this is commonly done.
After the elder gives a pop kiss and a candy, since there is nothing left in their mouth, nothing left to give, they will say the phrase "Ok, now
'eat my tongue" (not 'suck,' as His Holiness The Dalai Lama misspoke due to his less proficient
English). The Tibetan phrase is "Che le sa". They say that as in
"I've given you all my love and the candy so that's it-all that's left to do is eat my tongue." And it is a playful thing that the children know.
This is not really done in the Lhasa region (capital of Tibet) so much, but it is more common in the Amdo region (where HH is from).
However, it is definitely a Tibetan custom.
If we are honest with ourselves, we know that when we form an opinion on any topic without considering many aspects of context in any given situation, we are choosing to keep a significant degree of ignorance in our reasoning.

There may well be a cultural context but we also live in the present and the above opinion points out that we have just lived thru a time when humanity went mad over the possibility of spreading disease via saliva and air borne means. The DL and entourage are shown wearing masks not long before this happened. Even considering this act by an intelligent and seemingly wise being how could the DL ask, verging on demand, that a young boy, innocent of the intents of adults, actually stick his tongue out and pull the boy towards him telling him to suck his tongue. That sentence is actually in command form in English, it is not a question. It is shocking behavior for someone on the world stage. It indicates that he was not operating with full mental awareness that he was being filmed. It was as though he could not control himself to censor whatever it was that drove him on from the first act of "1st here" to the refusal to 'suck the tongue'.

It is not Tibetan culture to stick out one's tongue. This myth has been around for over a century. This is either a misunderstanding or a flat out falsehood.
Some Europeans, such as Heinrich Harrer, who made it to Tibet before it was invaded and occupied by the Chinese communists in 1959, authored books in which they mislead the outside world, mainly the western reader, that it was a Tibetan style of greeting or expressing respect to others. They did this to sell books by adding mystery, intrigue, and shock to their narrative. Giants and flying monks were also mentioned for the same effect. Both are, once again, false.
Forget that four decades ago, if I put my tongue out to Tibetans, they would designate me as a mentally ill. And if I had done this to Tibetan women five decades ago, they would have called me a sex-maniac, lecher, libertine, or burnt-out. If it's a greeting, you'd expect them to reciprocate, but they don't. You will be charged with sexual harassment if you do it today.
Some say that it was an ancient practice, which may be somewhat correct.
Udhum Tsenpo, also known as Lang Dharma, was a Tibetan ruler the last Tibetan king who rose to power through a coup and assassination in the ninth century. He was claimed to be scared of Buddhist tantric masters' capacity to cast spells and ordered that those who came into contact with him stick out their tongue to show to him that it was not black, as it was believed that individuals who meditated and recited powerful tantric mantras for a long time developed a black tongue. The king himself was slain within three years by a Buddhist recluse meditating in a cave, therefore this practice could not have lasted long.
The king was a devotee of Bon, Tibet's ancient indigenous religion. He was reported to be ruthless because he was opposed to the advent of Buddhism in Tibet. Buddhism first arrived in Tibet from India. Since the king had died, Tibetans were no longer obligated to stick out their tongues.
I have never seen Tibetans greet anyone by sticking out their tongues in my 55 years in the Tibetan community. However, I have noticed that some Tibetans would stick out their tongue for a split second when they are embarrassed or caught lying or stealing something of minor worth. Some young Tibetans do it politely to taunt youngsters or to say fuck you to grownups. Some people do it when they are nervous or when they are caught making a silly mistake in front of someone of better socioeconomic level. However, I have observed same behavior in other civilizations in comparable circumstances.
So, if this is a culture, it is a global culture.
However, His Holiness is not guilty for the following reasons.
    - [ ] ྄I see no lust in His Holiness to exploit the boy sexually
    - [ ] I see no intent in His Holiness to abuse the boy
    - [ ] The boy asked for a hug
    - [ ] His Holiness didn’t go to the boy and pounced him
    - [ ] It happened on camera in public
    - [ ] The boy has no problem
    - [ ] His parents have no problem
    - [ ] All three spoke. Watch their video clip
    - [ ] 87 year old cannot perform
    - [ ] 87 year old can have dementia. Political correctness escapes him sometimes
    - [ ] English not being his mother tongue his is not good enough. He meant to say eat my tongue
    - [ ] His entire life symbolizes love for all living beings including nature and his “enemies “
    - [ ] Not one case of child molestation rumor until now.
    - [ ] He is particularly playful for the past decade
    - [ ] With age people behave like children
    - [ ] Who unleashed the viral clip forty days after the public event? Pro Chinese forces
    - [ ] Who stands to gain by tarnishing the image of His Holiness? Chinese communist government
    - [ ] And Watch the whole 7 minute video, not just the doctored clip.
One million Tibetan kids are ripped apart from their families in Tibet and shipped to schools in Chinese cities where they are brainwashed into thinking they are Chinese, turning them into propaganda weapons for China.
Ask yourself if you ever spoke out against this widespread exploitation and molestation by placing your palm over your heart. only if you truly care.

I work as a nanny in us with a billionaire family. I always feel weird seeing parents not kissing their kids. Because I have kids and love giving kiss and my kids gets love from all families. One day I ask the dad, you don’t kiss your child? He answered me I was never kissed by my parents and it was weird for me. After then I notice they staring to kiss their child on their head and forehead sometimes. I notice they look more warm and affectionate with each other. We have different cultures so don’t judge. Negative people always take it negatively.

Barkha, I am in my late 40s and I still kiss my dad who is 80 plus, and my son 22 years old, who was born in America. It is normal to kiss on the lips in our society. It's a Tibetan custom where the elderly often tease kids saying the same as a sign of affection. Did Barkha Dutt bother to do her homework before sensationalising the case! Not everything is Indian politics that we should be ashamed of. Western media is obviously used to more outrageous and loathesome behaviour by celebrities. They lapped it up, of course. One must understand the geography and culture of the place where a person comes from.

Here the question is not about kissing. He kissed the kid first but it was an innocent kiss. But when he asked the kid to lick his tongue that's clearly abuse and not normal!! I don't think it has ever been "normal" to ask a kid to lick your tongue in any era or culture!!! It has nothing to do with evolution of laws or societal norms! Sexual intent can happen in front of a big crowd too when you are a person of power and when one knows that no one will doubt them! You are wrong in saying that there was no intent. When he kissed the kid it was different but when he asked the kid to suck his tongue there was a wrong intent! It was NOT playful. And when the kid became uncomfortable, Dalai Lama should have just stopped this thing even before it happened. The kid was uncomfortable. I don't think there is any culture in which kids are asked to suck tongues of the adults!

Consider the countless instances of crime and violence that would have been reduced as a result of the Dalai Lama's teachings and continuous promotion of being kind to each other and compassion. Instead of showing gratitude towards His Holiness, that journalist/TV actress? have caused harm to all Buddhist followers who believe in showing kindness to all human being. I was a little girl and I used to hate it!!! I hated going to that class only because of this reason otherwise he used to teach very nicely! Maybe it's a cultural thing but i used to feel so disgusted! I hated going to class so much so that karate used to start at home between me and my parents before going to the class! 🙂 Finally my parents budged. Unfortunately my first kiss is my karate sensei!😢 But ofcourse asking a kid to suck your tongue is definitely horrible and wrong intent.

Is there any chance the Dalai Lama… being 87 years old… has a new brain disorder?
It is horrible but what jumps out at me was that this occurred in public so he didn’t conceive the idea that this was wrong.
George HW was known to be very respectful throughout his entire life. During the last maybe 5 years before his death, when he was in a wheelchair, and clearly was not as cognitively sharp as he used to be; it was reported that he pinched a lady aide’s buttocks.
My guess is that similarly to an adult w/ an intellectual disability, HW, lost a lot of his prefrontal cortex abilities. Meaning, not just his impulsivity, but a change in personality due to declining cognitive abilities.

What is not considered is that HH informalized the whole way, we interact with him. In the old days, there was a lot of physical distance and blessings were made with a tassel or just a touch to the head. This is a very informal prelate, who hugs, people all the time - see accompanying pics. Two things collide here: one is our traditional reverence for HHDL and specially, the current incarnation. and the other is a take on chilld protection that requires the hyper legalization of all interactions. Perhaps more formal norms need to be re-established so that there is not such a misunderstanding. Remember, this was within 40 seconds in a big crowd with his parents very close. Rather than just identifying HHDL, a code of conduct for children's participation in public events should be developed and made public. So much happens in the public space using children , in India and all over the world. Abuse usually takes place in private not in the publix sphere with so many looking on. I hope there is no pressure on the family from any side and more so on the child. Listen to the IPS Officer. Social media is consuming the child -- in the end, its the sensationaliist feeding frenzy of Social Media. Lesson there for all of us.

First, if this session is meant to have a constructive discussion of the entire incident, play the full video under which the event took place. By simply playing a part of the video is planting a seed of doubt on the minds of uncorrupted individuals. And as I watch this session, I noticed how the entire narrative is getting shifted from nothing to something.
Second, if the concerns of the panel and public is about the “negative impact” to a child, his parents or guardian should step forward and explain how this incident impacted them and their child. I’m sure both the child and their parents will share our sentiments because we view the entire event from the same lens of reverence and love for His Holiness. And that’s why a child asked His Holiness for a hug in the presence of media and other worshippers.
Third, please refrain from comparing His Holiness to actions of laypeople. He is a living god. Everything he does, speaks and acts is considered sacred and holds a significant meaning. The child is beyond blessed to have such opportunity.
Fourth, all the incidences of sexual abuse, harassment and assault are conducted in closed doors and at nights, and not in public. The truth is that the entire session has created a new narrative of something it didn’t exist in the first place. I’m concerned how this would affect the child himself!
Five, please take a moment to pause and reflect. There are far better subjects and social issues in this world to discuss and fight for; poverty, unemployment, crime, delinquency, drug abuse, corruption, health problems, lack of access to education, and finally to hold real perpetrators of rape an accountable for their crimes. If I were you, I would leverage the platform to advocate for these issues.
And finally, His Holiness the great 14th Dalai Lama has served and dedicated his entire life cultivating peace, compassion and love to create a safe and better place for us to live, breathe and evolve. Even at 87, he is committed and tirelessly works for the world peace. Our love, reverence and gratitude to His Holiness the great 14th Dalai Lama will remain untainted. Both public and media should realise that our children are in a better place because of His Holiness message of peace, love and non-violence🙏🏻Kyab Su Che📿

"Third, please refrain from comparing His Holiness to actions of laypeople. He is a living god. Everything he does, speaks and acts is considered sacred and holds a significant meaning. The child is beyond blessed to have such opportunity." - and I urge you to take note of the last sentence - THE CHILD IS BEYOND BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH OPPORTUNITY - (emphasis mine) Ms. Nordon, Really, the child is blessed to suck his holiness' tongue?!
"And finally, His Holiness the great 14th Dalai Lama has served and dedicated his entire life cultivating peace, compassion and love to create a safe and better place for us to live, breathe and survive. Even at 87, he is committed and tirelessly works for the world peace. Our love, reverence and gratitude to His Holiness the great 14th Dalai Lama will remain untainted. Both public and media should realise that our children are in a better place because of His Holiness message of peace, love and non-violence🙏🏻Kyab Su Che📿"
Again, Ms. Nordon... just because His Holiness The Dalai Lama has done a yeoman's service to the cause of the world - and I would be the first one to admit and have enormous respect for him having read a bit - not a lot - of his sayings and also about him. But to say - that should be an excuse to exonerate him from such an abrasive act! We are not looking at actions of some of the prophets in the distant past, when none saw anything wrong with many of the actions that would be unpardonable these days. His Holiness is living with us - HERE and NOW - and he has been a very modern thinker.
Without showing disrespect - I wonder if the frailities of age are finally catching up with His Holiness? Should he be now contemplating on retirement - even as I am sure this will leave a significant vacuum - but history tells us that when he ran away from Tibet and into India - there was a huge vacuum, which he managed to fill eventually. The modern information technology would not be as accommodative of the frailties of the new leader and he would be watched and scrutinised and his actions - both omissions and commissions - be analysed very closely - microscopically.
There are things passed off as culturally acceptable - Really?! If that were the case - we should be accepting and eulogising many cultural practices - Sati, Gender inequality, Polygamy - daughters have no right to property - cultural practices abhor and go against science - all the rituals that are harmful and regressive - are we going to continue to embrace them - when The Holiness himself has embraced modernity and science and has willingly subjected Buddhism to be tested against the principles of modern science.
Please stay awake and alive - alive to the reality. Even Gandhi was widely criticised for his foolish experiments in his old age, despite him being a Mahatma - his frailties were there for all to see... So please let us not get overawed and do call out what happened. Ask - should The Holiness - given his age related frailties be taking a back seat and retire..... He has been a hero for millions - including for me for many, many years.... Let us keep his good work relevant and alive...

Will they do such if it involves other faith’s leaders. It’s very clear perpetrator of cropped video is meant to vilify his holiness and hurt Tibetan people’s sentiments.

In Law we always say that a predetermined mind is already failed to do justice in a case. This is absolutely an inappropriate act but one has to establish the intent as talked by one of the member. And moreover only the boy could certainly tell whether he felt any sexual intent in it or not. In 48 min show how many times the word sexual intent / gesture used and used for such an old person who is revered all over the world.

  • @daviss.678
    @daviss.678 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This has been taken out of context.
I think this is not an inappropriate act, but a public act where the Dalai Lama had an innocent gesture which is misinterpreted from different cultural clues.
I understand that in the West we are tired of seeing the impunity of thousands of cases of pederasty in certain religious institutions but that has to be addressed with judicial actions that, unfortunately, are being impededed...
It's already known that social networks are a cauldron of unleashed emotions, often grounded in bullshit.
The fact is that in Tibet they have a habit of greeting each other by sticking out their tongue or touching their nose, as a sign of affection and respect.
His Holiness publicly saluted a child with that tongue-out gesture that we Westerners associate with disrespect, which is just the opposite of its Tibetan meaning.
There was nothing inappropriate about that public act. On the contrary, the child and his family continued enthusiastically accompanying SS to that event.
In view of the noise that has been generated, the Dalai Lama has issued a statement regretting the inconvenience caused to people who have not properly interpreted the situation.
Unfortunately, this generous act of compassion by the Dalai Lama has been manipulated into making it seem like an admission of guilt, which is an absolutely misinterpretation.
May we observe this situation from compassion, understanding that those who act by propagating bullies, are people who suffer because of their confusion.
We have an excellent practice to offer them that compassionate love they need through the practice of TongLen.
A warm greeting, with much love

Barkha, if you wanted an honest discussion the least could have done is find the unedited video. It isn’t that difficult. You playing the same cropped video says a lot. Another thing, for those saying intent is difficult to prove, yes, I get it you can’t possibly read someone’s mind but you can sure you check their history if there been any other such incident, look at their other work and his behaviour in general.
