I’m torn. I love del tha funky Homosapien, as a fan of 90s west coast hip hop, he’s a classic mc. And a lot of hip hop heads know how good he is. I personally think his best work is deltron, but phi life was crazy talented as well, and I prefer their versions of rock the house and Clint Eastwood (they also did a version of Starshine that’s pretty cool) but Damon and Dan did them dirty. (I still respect Dan the Automator and hope to hear that album he’s been holding back on, which has lonely man(or gorillaz routine) it features mos def and Damon himself)

If the Phi Life Cypher version of Clint Eastwood wound up being the main version, Gorillaz would not exist today. They'd be an obscure footnote in the career of the guy from Blur. A quirky lo-fi thing he tried back in 2001 that didn't really go anywhere. Swapping these amateurs out for Del was literally the smartest move that Damon, Jamon, & Dan made. Literally saved the album from obscurity. Without Del's Clint Eastwood, there is no Gorillaz.

Phi Life Cypher are absurdly average rappers and Del's high quality rapping was one of the main reasons - maybe THE reason - why the song _Clint Eastwood_ was as successful as it was. And the success of that song - especially in conjunction with its music video, which was really the only reason why people's attention was drawn to the song and thus the album and band in the first place - was pretty much *THE* reason why the album _Gorillaz_ was as successful as it was - *slightly* buoyed as well by _19-2000_ and to much lesser extent _Rock The House_ (a song which also was made successful primarily by -Del the Fucking Homosexual- er, I mean _Del tha Funkee Homosapian,_ and also originally had a Phi Life Cypher version that could never have been half as successful as the final version with Del thanks to their utterly amateurish rapping).
And the success of that album was the ONLY reason why Damon & Jamie eventually decided to make a second go of it 4 years later with _Demon Days._ And the absolutely ENORMOUS, STAGGERING international success of _Demon Days_ - primarily due to the enormous success of the song _Feel Good, Inc._ and it's equally perfect music video, but also supported by the slightly lesser success of the songs _Dirty Harry_ and _DARE_ along with their respective music videos - was the only reason why Gorillaz was considered a success by Damon & Jamie and the whole world. Which is why they felt confident enough to go on to make _Plastic Beach_ 5 years later, and then 6 & 7 years after THAT, upon making up after their falling out in 2010/2011/2012, make _Humanz_ & _The Now Now_ and indeed make Gorillaz Damon's primary musical endeavor, with Blur pretty much over & done with and his strictly solo endeavor kinda petering out, as it were....
So that whole domino effect traces directly back, in one straight line, to Del's decision to agree to make a new version of _Clint Eastwood_ for Damon & Jamie & Dan the Automator's then-new Gorillaz project

automator kicked off phi-life at last moment after promising they would be in the record. phi-life found out they got replaced the day the album came out when they listened to it and heard del. doesn't matter which version is better, automator's still an asshole

I’m gonna say this here. The official version of Rock The House is dogshit, especially compared to this. Del is really good but the lyrics in Rock The House were horrible and this version is far far better
