Sailing 30 NM down the New Zealand coast

They say all good things must come to an end. After spending time in Whangaroa Harbour with our friends, it's time to head south again. Living aboard our sailboat means our movements are dictated by weather rather than timeframes which suits us both just fine! It's the first time we give our hydrovane a proper try too! Oh...and did you know that New Zealand has flying fish? We didn't so imagine our surprise when we saw three as we sailed 30 nautical miles down the coast to the Bay of Islands.

In December 2021, we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40, and we have been fortunate to sail to many of New Zealand’sislands and anchorages. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. Our plan? We try not to make too many plans but plan to do blue water cruising. Whilst sailing New Zealand's northern coastline, we're completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements. In the meantime, follow along with us as we navigate this lifestyle whilst sharpening our skills sailing New Zealand waters.
